This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening there Bob
  7:00pm Ed:

evening bob and Evan!
Avatar 7:02pm ndbob:

hello Ed!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, all!! Sharks! Think we're gonna need a bigger boat!
Avatar 7:04pm hyde:

hola fs, ndb, ljfw
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Listener James, hello good evening and welcome
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Hyde! Splendid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Carmichael:

Heya Flash, it's June 30th here at work. Do you have any fiscal year end music??
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

@ James: Sharks AND kangaroos, so it balances out
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

that Inner Space picture reminds me sooo much of the documentary "Blue Water, White Death", that was an American doc about great whites that i totally harangued my mother into taking me to in like 1971? maybe 1972.
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Hi Carmichael! This is the best I got
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

I've heard of that, Hyde. How was it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Carmichael:

Olivia Newton John sang "let's Get Fiscal", right?
Avatar 7:12pm hyde:

well, i haven't seen it since i was eight. but i was enthralled at the time!

around the same time, i harassed her into taking me to The Hellstrom Chronicle, which is a totally amazing and weird movie. kind of a pseudo-documentary about insects inheriting the earth. with music by Lalo Schifrin!

i was a weird kid. she was a good mom.
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

that sounds really good
Avatar 7:14pm geezerette:

Good Evaning,intrepids!
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

@Flash Strap it never came out on vhs, but Olive Films finally put it out on dvd. it's hilarious because it won the Oscar for best documentary in '72, but it is totally not really a documentary. It intercuts all this sci fi and horror film footage with footage of bugs. It made a huge impression on me.
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

hiya, geezerette!
Avatar 7:20pm geezerette:

Howdy hyde!
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

Good evening Geezerette!

Hyde, I gotta see that.
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

That is the titular Ron & Val Taylor up top
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

Sven's just killer composing for vibraphone and harmonica especially, but the flutes on this LP are just over the top great
Avatar 7:36pm Flash Strap:

Hellstrom Chronicle looks like a winner to me: www.mondo-digital.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm listener james from westwood:

"Dark World" is completely classing up my humble repast. Dig it.
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

me too James. i mean wow
Avatar 7:37pm hyde:

Hellstrom Chronicle is amazing.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

crown of thorns: www.wildlifeextra.com...
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

enjoy it while it lasts, we're about to have to get out of the water
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

don't worry, we'll sort of ease on out
Avatar 7:41pm hyde:

wow, what is the crown of thorns? is that like a spiky nudibranch?
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

it's a sea star/starfish i think... a nudibranch is different from those, right?
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

nudibranches are way cool though. cooler, even.
Avatar 7:47pm hyde:

yeah, starfish are echinoderms. nudibranchs are mollusks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm listener james from westwood:

An image search for "nudibranch" is a sure cure for a flagging mood. And then there's the Bowiebranch Tumblr: bowiebranchia.tumblr.com
Avatar 7:55pm hyde:

@ljfw that is hilarious
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

haha oh my goodness that is some color coordination
Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan! bye for now everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm listener james from westwood:

Holy shit, the open of this Peaceful Landscape was used in a Peter Serafinowicz bit. For when you're at leisure: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:59pm Little Danny:

Jamming so hard on this as I begin prep for my show, Flash. Again a dauntingly high standard is being set.
Avatar 8:03pm geezerette:

Evocative is the word. Many images bubble up all through the muic,it carries an era.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm melinda:

hi Evan and everyone! Late to the Libaek party, darn. 2 more hours though!
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

Little Danny! A challenge you shall meet and best with ease, as usual
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

Melinda! Glad to have you, I remember you mentioning that you'd be into this one if I were to do it
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

oh and bye bob! parting is such sweet sorrow
Avatar 8:11pm hyde:

it's melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm melinda:

Hi hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm melinda:

This does have a ski vibe.
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

it sounds so Libaek
Avatar 8:14pm Little Danny:

@melinda "sky vibes" is cracking me up
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

this one is harder to find the Libaek voice in
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

but it's there
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

oh yeah, there's that big harmonica
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm melinda:

There are a lot of things going on in this.
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

not a lot of people compose for harmonica like that. It's really striking.

the next song, The Lost City, is one of my all-time true loves, for obvious reasons
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

here's an image of child Sven, playing piano on a windjammer. The piano is lashed to the bulkhead: 4.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar 8:24pm Little Danny:

Oh wow. That photo is so perfect for Libaek.
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

and here he is as a young Norwegian lad: 2.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm melinda:

What a great photo. Music at sea. I like that one of the musicians has a cloth protecting his head from the sun.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Isn't it though? and that's the seminal moment of his career, really. without that, no Libaek as we know it
Avatar 8:25pm hyde:

wow. the boat pic has Arthur Fiedler too, right? I'm still not sure I understand that connection. (I'm from Boston; only know Fiedler from The Pops)
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

i'm not sure, my historiography is fuzzy on this one. The Fiedler connection came when he was in New York at the end of that voyage, and they shot a big recital with Fiedler for the film. I don't know Fiedler by sight, though
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

I love this track like crazy
Avatar 8:29pm hyde:

i'm pretty sure that's Fiedler cf. audiopreservationfund.org...
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

haha ok definitely
Avatar 8:35pm geezerette:

Loving the movie in my head, lyricism in this music is wonderful.
Avatar 8:38pm geezerette:

There's a lightness to it;a lot escapism in 70's pop culture, a lot of denial.
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

I agree. In a way he reminds me of Les Baxter, composing for youth cinema but harking from another time entirely
Avatar 8:50pm geezerette:

I'm not aware of Les Baxter but I'm sure I'd recognize some of his work.
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

he gets played a lot around these parts. Between me and Danny, anyway
Avatar 8:57pm geezerette:

Great! I'll start looking for it. Always learning so much from DJs here. One of the things I think most listeners love best about FMU. :D
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

just went to put some stuff in my car, and realized...it's firefly season!
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

oh man our woods here are all a-twinkle
Avatar 9:00pm geezerette:

hyde,WOW! We don't have those and watching them along a lake once was one of the loveliest things I've ever seen.
Avatar 9:00pm hyde:

here too. though it seems less populous than last year. we had an awful dry spring.
Avatar 9:02pm hyde:

@geezerette they are really cool, i love them
Avatar 9:10pm hyde:

i love this one.
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

me too. both the inst. and vocal versions are killer
Avatar 9:14pm geezerette:

Very Brazilian,"Start Growing Up".
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

incredible, this volley of echoey flutes
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

major groove here, relatively speaking
Avatar 9:28pm geezerette:

This is regal! It has fanfares in it! (Wild Formations)
Libaek had a deep knowledge and feeling for vernacular sound.
Avatar 9:29pm geezerette:

Blown away by sophistication and skill.
Avatar 9:29pm Little Danny:

Oh hell yes. Soul Thing b/w Misty Canyon. Groover's delight.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

this is definitely a top track here
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

bout to leave it all behind and blast off for SPAAAAACE
Avatar 9:31pm geezerette:

:D!!!
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

Love the way this synth sounds! I think this is the one but I'm not sure: 4.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

also here's one of the maestro at work (red turtleneck, white thick wale cords): 3.bp.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm melinda:

Solar Flares is dreamy.
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

super dreamy. dreaming intensifies with the next track as well
Avatar 9:39pm geezerette:

Great photos! my husband's gonna love them, he's a sound engineer.
Avatar 9:39pm hyde:

ya gotta love a synth with wood panelling
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

@hyde: it's the only way to travel
Avatar 9:40pm geezerette:

haha! :)
Avatar 9:42pm geezerette:

In the olden times sonny they made everything out of trees.
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

man this is almost sort of severe
Avatar 9:49pm geezerette:

...a little Moon Dog-y!
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

serious jazz-ness
Avatar 9:51pm northguineahills:

Just finished a podcast of Ottoman classical music. more talk then actual music.
Avatar 9:52pm geezerette:

This guy had the hearing of a mockingbird. A recorder in his mind.
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

hey there, NGH!
Avatar 9:53pm Little Danny:

@Northguineahills I think I need more information about said podcast
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

Hope everyone will join me in the next isle over: wfmu.org... Breezes shall flow
Avatar 9:54pm hyde:

@ngh yeah, dish!
Avatar 9:55pm geezerette:

Always fun Evan, love this show. Happy 4th!
Avatar 9:56pm geezerette:

Happy 4th hyde and NGH,melinda.
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

Thanks all! See you Tuesday, 6-10, if I'm lucky!
Avatar 9:58pm hyde:

same to you, geezerette. bye all. thanks Flash. here's hoping i remember to tune in tuesday night instead of thursday! (and yeah, i'm on the mailing list. still, i'm a creature of habit).
Avatar 10:05pm northguineahills:
