i wonder if the motivation to create a novelty song based on a famous person is sometimes the hope that it will somehow result in meeting the subject of the song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Sam Segal:

I wonder, @coelacanth. I did forget to mention that Betty Garrett went on to become much better known for playing the role of the landlady on Laverne & Shirley.

Bin Murphy:

Hey Sam! I see you're up to your total classical weirdness! Why don't you "hit me with your best shot!?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

Hi, Bin! That's a tall order, but I will try to "hit you with" my "best shot."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
melinda:

I remember Betty Garrett, now that you mention her role on Laverne & Shirley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
coelacanth:

Sam, i did second guess myself and looked her up and yeah, i guess in the 70s (?) she was as well-known as Bogart so, good on her! she may have been bigger than i'm aware of when she recorded that song too; but it would've been hard to be bigger than Bogart!
Avatar 9:54pm
geezerette:

Betty Garrett had a successful Broadway and film career in the late 40s & 50s.
Avatar 9:56pm

Got her big break,I think, in a revue of new talent on, or "off", Broadway. She was "discovered".

Lincoln (Linked) Cowles:

Sam--It's Linked. Long time WFMUer, first time listening to YOUer. Love Owen Maercks...interesting transition to Herman's Hermits. Pretty crazy, though, the deal with Maercks. I'm old enough to have heard Teenage Sex Therapist when it first came out but obviously didn't until the rerelease a couple years ago. Preeeetty rad, Dad.

--Linked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
Sam Segal:

Hiya, @Linked! Thanks for tuning in. Bizarre thing about that Maercks tune in particular is that an A&R guy from Elektra who heard the Teenage Sex Therapist record apparently recommended it to the Cars...meaning there's only one degree of separation between Henry Kaiser and Ric Ocasek.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
coelacanth:

well, i'm taking ol' Scout into town 'fore the general store closes. 'plain outa oats.
i'll check back in later if i don't run into that pesty "lone ranger" character...he's always got some crazy drama he's gotta drag me into.
Thanks Sam!

I didn't know this new EP just came out - just checked Discogs and saw someone says "Also definitely try this at different speeds. So far I am really enjoying CheetahT7b at 45rpm -12%". Feels like I see what he means now that I am hearing this.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

@Mayuko: wow, that does make perfect sense. I imagine Richard D. James would approve of that kind of experimentation. Would love to hear that track slowed down by about 33%.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Ike:

I don't know about this EP, but that may be a standard Aphex Twin m.o. He did an unrecognizable remix of a Curve song on a 12" in the early 90s with no speed marked. You could play it at 33 or at 45, and it sounded good both ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Sam Segal:

Hello, @Ike! Yeah, sounds like classic AT trickery.

Joining in at last. Been listening all along but working in the kitchen and whatnot. Good show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Parq:

Mayuko, when I first started listening to FMU in '79, and into the mid-80s, the big thing was letting skipping vinyl go on and on -- like for a full minute or more. A roommate, who didn't quite get FMU, looked at me once and said, "They're *doing* it again!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Sam Segal:

Thank ya kindly, @Parq. I hope you've prepared enough of whatever you were working on in the kitchen for all of us.

Avatar 11:36pm
Mayuko:

@Parq haha! So it's a long tradition. Thanks to those DJs, people seem to think it's all just intentional when I make technical mistakes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Sam Segal:

Wow, that is a great picture, @Mayuko. Thanks for the info. Does she have more recordings than that one? I'm so blown away by her music.
Avatar 11:42pm
Mayuko:

I seem to remember she was also playing keyboard in a band called Saitoeletrico, but let me double check now. ha, feels like it's so very long ago that I knew these bands in Tokyo.
Avatar 11:47pm
Mayuko:

yah she does play with Saitoeletorico - and has some releases from Oz Disc, a label in Tokyo. it's funny because when you played that Oz thing I first thought of Oz Disc. The label owner Taguchi runs a small but pretty crazy CD store called Enban which I used to go, I'm sure you can buy her stuff there... the problem is Tokyo is too faraway!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Sam Segal:

A problem indeed...I'd love to go someday though. I'll put Enban on my list. For now, perhaps Discogs can help.
