Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar 10:10pm geezerette:

Good acoustics in the Big House.
Avatar 10:10pm Little Danny:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

And decent sound effects, too, geez.
Avatar 10:11pm hyde:

Avatar 10:13pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Uncle Michael:

Evening all.
Avatar 10:14pm Little Danny:

Dude, Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm doctorjazz:

Just got here, nice set so far from what I see on the list, lots of nice analog hiss on this slide guitar track. Working while I listen.
Avatar 10:15pm Little Danny:

Jack Penewell played a double-necked guitar in 1927
Avatar 10:15pm geezerette:

Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

Avatar 10:17pm geezerette:

"Irish Eyes" incredible! Sounds much more modern than it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm doctorjazz:

There's a set I shoulda' sprung for (the Paramount), not inexpensive, though.
Love Blind Willie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm coelacanth:

good evening Little D and Cool Bluettes
Avatar 10:18pm geezerette:

Avatar 10:19pm Little Danny:

Doctorjazz - I downloaded it. There is a LOT of throwaway material in my opinion.
Avatar 10:19pm Little Danny:

Hi Coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Uncle Michael:

I downloaded the Paramount sets too. I'm happy to have all of it. There's a lot I don't need to hear more than once...and tons I'd never program on the show. It's an incredible archive, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Uncle Michael:

This is such a GREAT soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Doug Schulkind:

Hola, Daniel grande!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm melinda:

Wow, I was just thinking that the Blind Willie Johnson had bits of this Ry Cooder piece in it and must have been an influence. Love this soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Uncle Michael:

Right up there with Mark Knopfler's Local Hero soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm doctorjazz:

Yeah, not surprising, but there must be some stuff (when you pick through it) that is amazing. Have to find the downloads.
Ry Cooder is one of my favorites, since I tuned in, you're just KILLING it (making it hard for me to get my work done).
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

Fearless leader Doug! Great to have you back.
Avatar 10:22pm geezerette:

Harry Dean's playing right? The music was a huge component of that film, almost a character.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm coelacanth:

i'd like to tell you which Willie Johnson collection i have because (in my opinion) it's all top notch; but i'm not home and cannot check.
Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

Thanks Doc Jazz!
Avatar 10:24pm Little Danny:

UM: it's one of THEE great '80s soundtracks, and THEE great '80s movies.
Avatar 10:24pm Little Danny:

Totally agree geez.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Uncle Michael:

It's a shame Harry Dean's "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" from Cool Hand Luke isn't available anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm melinda:

I like playing it at work sometimes but then when Harry Dean's monologue comes on I'm afraid it will make customers uncomfortable. I should edit my playlists for work.
Avatar 10:28pm geezerette:

Hey coel!

What a set! Never heard this version, beautiful! (Elvis?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm coelacanth:

howdy g! ...definitely Elvish!
Avatar 10:29pm Little Danny:

God that monologue is just wrenching. HDS has the most beautiful voice, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm melinda:

I thought Elvis too.
Avatar 10:31pm geezerette:

He does! Saw him once at The Mint, riveting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm melinda:

I'm embarrassed to say that I've never seen Cool Hand Luke but I'd love to hear him sing that song, I should check it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm coelacanth:

isn't the butterfly species also spelled with no h?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm coelacanth:

...(no, i'm mistaken.)
....melinda i've never seen cool hand luke either; but then there are many legendary movies i've never seen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm melinda:

Yeah, I guess we can't expect to have seen everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Uncle Michael:

I've seen Cool Hand Luke enough times for all of us....just not enough times for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm mauri:

I recorded plastic jesus song from cool hand luke vhs so that I could listen to it without video. Did the same with Dirty Harry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm melinda:

The 2nd or 3rd time I watched Paris, Texas I recognized the diner where they meet in the beginning as the one I once visited with my grandparents as a child. The orange vinyl booth seats were distinctive. I mentioned it to my mom and she said yes, that was where my grandfather liked to hang out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm mauri:

Tape hiss days.
Avatar 10:44pm Little Danny:

Whoa, I love that Melinda. Are you from Tejas?
Avatar 10:44pm geezerette:

Film is over 100 years old! Impossible to see everything.
It's fun to see films at MoMA. They show a lot of obscure things. Good obscure, not should be. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Uncle Michael:

Calling it a night...gonna continue listening though. Good stuff, Danny. Night all. See you all here on the stream tomorrow.
Avatar 10:45pm Little Danny:

G'night, Michael - catch ya tomorrow.
Avatar 10:46pm geezerette:

'Night UM!
Avatar 10:47pm northguineahills:

Phew, a GTDS stream! I'm dogsitting for a friend, and the next door neighbor is play shitty top 40 club music at top volume.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm coelacanth:

sweet dreams Uncle M!
Avatar 10:47pm Little Danny:

Oof, warped 45.
Avatar 10:48pm Little Danny:

NGH, I'll try and cancel out the next door neighbor vibes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm melinda:

@Danny: Yes! I grew up in Austin but my parents are from San Angelo and Ft. Stockton. Even though the memory was pretty clear in my mind, I sometimes question whether I've mentally changed things, since memory can be weird that way, so it was interesting to see it confirmed in a film I'd already seen once or twice.
Avatar 10:51pm northguineahills:

danke LD!
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

Wow, Melinda - those are nearby, which says a lot. There's not much nearby to us here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm melinda:

Yeah, everything's far apart out there.
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

"Lonely Teardrops" gets harrowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm melinda:

Pretty intense.
Avatar 11:01pm northguineahills:

Kali Bahlu, new to me, I dig!
Avatar 11:03pm Little Danny:

I'm glad NGH. Bahlu also had an entire LP, tho it wasn't so gripping.
Avatar 11:03pm northguineahills:

Mirroring has a nice 90s Bristol lo-fi vibe (ala FSA)
Avatar 11:05pm Little Danny:

Nice Flying Saucer Attack reference. Love them, btw.
Avatar 11:11pm northguineahills:

I woke up this morning w/ a track from FSA's "Distance" playing in my head. I hate to go, but I must. Thanks Danny, tre happening shit!. Can't wait until I finish moving so I can listen more often livev.
Avatar 11:21pm Little Danny:

'Night NGH - happy you could be here. Pleasant dreams.
Avatar 11:28pm geezerette:

That voice!
Avatar 11:29pm Little Danny:

I know! How would you describe it? Impassioned, heartfelt?
Avatar 11:30pm geezerette:

Both of those!
Avatar 11:34pm geezerette:

Sincere too,which is somehow heartbreaking.

"What'll I Do?" hits me the same way,one of my favorite songs. Great version here, lovely. jerome Kern?
Avatar 11:46pm Little Danny:

Irving Berlin if my cursory web search is to be trusted!
Avatar 11:51pm geezerette:

Makes sense. Thanks L. Danny.

Bobby Grant! WOW!
Lee Konitz! This show is knocking me out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am coelacanth:

Thanks Danny! i'll have to revisit as i had much technical difficulty today.
good night everyone
Avatar 12:09am geezerette:

'Night coel!
