"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

for starters, you guys ok with mid-late 80s post free-jazz? I need to get thru a few of these records...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17am
George of Troy:

I'm in. New haul?
Hey, Sem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19am

Take the helm, Cap'n John, chart your course.

John Allen:

i'm just on a new kick, lowbidding on the second half of the 80s..cept this one here from 81.

AndrewC.:

Stupid broken headphones. This would not be the first time I've sat and listened for half an hour thinking that it all sounds a bit thin and weedy today. Then I jiggle the headphone socket, and we're back to life. Grr. Can I have my half hour back?
Avatar 6:28am
John Allen:

everyone, Andrew want's a redo of the first half hour/ Should we give it to him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28am
AndrewC.:

I promise to go to the archive this afternoon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32am
George of Troy:

"...and that thin, weedy sound that seemed to go on for a half hour... was that the record, or my headphones?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40am
AndrewC.:

@George the only real solution to that problem is to stop listening to avant garde records. Unacceptable unfortunately...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
Sem Chumbo:

Steady as she goes.
@AndrewC.: good to know your limits:-D

Good morning JA and allenites. Helping me get over the hump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13am

Been great this AM, John. Now off to the default world, an decidedly worse prospect by many orders of magnitude than swimming in Bengal. Later, all.

This is getting me to run up the hump.

Wild Neil:

PEACE John et al...Linda Sharrock is pretty out there....Free Jazz goes FAR beyond Prog Rock in terms of...unusualness for sure...@John Allen et al, would you call Mats Gustaffson Free Jazz or more Psychadelic Jazz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39am
common:

good day!
Avatar 7:41am
John Allen:

how about free improvisor. i do not support the term psychedelic jazz. it sounds like a lazy construct
Avatar 7:46am
Wild Neil:

This Alessandra Novaga song sounds like outer space sounds....so the title makes sense!

Hi John Allen

suicide!
Avatar 7:53am
Wild Neil:

This Suicide song has a lot of unresolved tension due to the continuous synthesizer chord, with no release of tension. Its a tense song....
Avatar 7:57am
Wild Neil:

RIP Alan Vega.....I never heard his music until I came here to WFMU...he was fairly old actually...this song is vaguely menacing...

Good gravy! What is this speaking?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:03am
Ken From Hyde Park:

OK...Ben Carson, evidently.
Avatar 8:04am
Wild Neil:

The record is skipping I guess...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:06am
Ken From Hyde Park:

I meant to ask "who is speaking?" Brain not fully in gear yet.

AnAnonymousParty:

So I'm running the new v8 version of the Stereo Tool for winamp, The oscilloscope window is showing a pretty stable sinusoidal waveform for the Alessandra Novaga piece, for those keeping score.
Avatar 8:12am
John Allen:

ok anon, you get to lead the class today
Avatar 8:17am
Wild Neil:

@Anon-do minor key songs (that I generally prefer) have a distinct waveform, or is it just shifted left or right, assuming all rhythm and volume is the same which is of course impossible just like this question is impossible?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am
AnAnonymousParty:

@Neil, short answer: no. The only real difference between a major and minor key is the pattern of intervals between notes in the scale. Any given note wouldn't look much different than another except for frequency. But a spectral analysis might show some differences ... but now I wonder if you'd see a difference between a piece played in a major key vs one played in that major key's relative minor key.

bobdoesthings:

goodmorning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am
George of Troy:

Super set this morning, John. The Sharrock was a blast, and that Novaga album has caught my ear more than once over the last few weeks.
Avatar 8:47am
bobdoesthings:

@neil - chords are constructed from the scale they are in. major chords are basically 1-3-5.. meaning if the root note of the chord is a C.. the scale for C (I chose C because it has no sharps or flats) is C-D-E-F-G-A-B so a major chord is C-E-G.. to make it minor the intervals are 1-flat 3rd-5. so by making the third note in that scale flat you create a dissonance between the notes and you get a 'sad' sounding chord. jazzy chords throw in a 7th.. and it gets more complex from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am
AnAnonymousParty:

Ah, well if you were comparing the waveform on a scope of say a C major chord and a C minor chord, you would see a difference, but it would probably be pretty subtle, not something you could pick up in a stream of music and identify it as major or minor based just on casually looking, especially if there is anything else going on.
Avatar 8:55am
bobdoesthings:

Thanks John Allen!
Avatar 8:55am
Wild Neil:

Great show John! Music theory is a really really deep subject....
Avatar 8:57am
bobdoesthings:

@neil - it can be.. but also you don't need to know any of that shit to ROCK!
Avatar 8:57am
John Allen:

Neil, what anon. is saying is that you won't necessarily see things the way they feel to you. thanks anon. see ya'll next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am

Next week we'll explain why the same note played on a violin and a bassoon looks different on a scope...
