Interestingly, this Tellus comp was funded by a government arts grant.

A lot of the stuff on this tape is not at all what people usually mean by the term "power electronics" these days....

Rich in Washington:

Blackhouse was such a weird outfit. Sort of played up this angle that he was a Christian Noise musician . Not sure if it was for real or not.
Avatar 12:34pm
Tony Coulter:

Greets, coelacanth!
Avatar 12:37pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: I always took the name Blackhouse to be a response/call out to Whitehouse, the U.K. noise/industrial band. Wonder if it was indeed meant that way....
Avatar 12:38pm
Mayuko:

Good afternoon!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Rich in Washington:

I think you're right, Tony. I used to have a few of his/their cassettes and as far as I could tell, he played up this end-times eschatologist angle in his lyrics and notes.

I wonder if this track convinced anyone not to have kids....
Avatar 12:56pm
Tony Coulter:

By my reckoning, Le Syndicat (who are French) and Merzbow are the only acts on this cassette not from the U.S.
Avatar 12:58pm
Tony Coulter:

I *think* Mitch Corber (on now) was someone I knew back in the '80s. It's bugging me that I can't quite remember whether/why I knew him. Oy, my poor brain....

Heya Tony und Leuten. This is suitably off-center music for this show and for me.
Avatar 1:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Carmichael!
Avatar 1:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Around 3/4 of the tracks on "Fetish" have been reissued on CD, but the rest haven't, so ... thought I'd play the whole tape for your listening pain/pleasure.
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Die Form was big on the sexual deviance/sadomasochism thing. See this vid, for example: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 1:32pm
Mayuko:

Somehow it seems universal that S&M people like noise/industrial music. At least that's what I've seen at fetish parties in Tokyo. I always felt a bit strange to be at those places dressing up very ordinarily and having no special sexual preferences.
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, dominance/submission routines to Barry Manilow would be a bit strange....
  1:35pm
MrFab:

Never understood it. I try to *avoid* pain. Isnt there enuf in life as it is?!
Not judging, hey if thats your thing...
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Not my thing. I like cheetos.
  1:36pm
Dean:

There's pain--dom/sub playacting at spanking and mild forms of torture--and *pain*--Barry Manilow.
Avatar 1:37pm
Mayuko:

S&M with Barry Manilow sounds rather way too perverted than any of those fetish thing out there.
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

How right you are, Dean. (Greets!)
Avatar 1:38pm
Mayuko:

This Die Form has been great by the way!!
Avatar 1:41pm
Tony Coulter:

Glad you like it!
Avatar 1:43pm
Chris from DC:

Now is the time on Sprockets where we dance.
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

It is getting more and more danceable, isn't it? Too bad it's so hard to dance when you're all trussed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
Rich in Washington:

geez, I leave for one brief meeting and I come back to a discussion on the merits/pitfalls of S&M. Or is it all figurative?
  2:07pm
Dean:

Simile and metaphor? Of course it's figurative!
Avatar 2:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Did you get permission to leave, Rich? We may have to punish you with a spanking.

- i have that algebra suicide song on cassette, recorded from wfmu c.1984...Paul Cavenaugh's show, which you probably remember, Tony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

CHEETOS! (What a strange little word that is. I mean, look at it. CHEE-TOS. Huh.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
coelacanth:

cheeze toes
Avatar 2:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ coelacanth: Actually, no I don't remember that show. Started listening a little later than '84.
Avatar 2:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Jeff!! G!!
Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

@ coelacanth: Sounds like I would have liked it, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
coelacanth:

oh, i was thinking you must've started doing a show in the 80s...no?
...Paul played mostly punkrock. a lot of funny stuff and some revolution-minded reggae; while Pat Duncan was more serious and played hardcore.
- those 2 shows were the first fmu shows i listened to regularly.
Avatar 2:19pm
Tony Coulter:

@ coelacanth: Nope, I started in 1990. Began listening to the station maybe around '87 or '88 (??)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm

(...and our ol' pal Irwin, but not as religiously)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm
coelacanth:

ah, it's all a blur. sometimes i feel like i've known you and Charlie and Scott W, Diane, Terre T, William Berger...for most of my life!
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

R. Stevie Moore was my gateway to FMU, plus Fred Frith's (guest?) slot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
coelacanth:

i remember hearing R.Stevie Moore but i'm very vague as to when.
...i did leave the area too, for a little while, a few times...and i never really memorized the schedule before the internet. (& the internet for me started around 2008. i never listened to fmu via internet until my antennae broke 3-4 years ago.)
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm very vague about when things happened too. The only reason I remember when I did my first show on FMU is that I still have my handwritten playlist. The very first track I ever played on FMU was De La Soul's "Transmitting Live from Mars."
Avatar 2:36pm
Tony Coulter:

The beginning and end of my career as a hip-hop DJ.
Avatar 2:36pm
Carmichael:

I'm a 20 year veteran of FMU, all internet. Continues to be a great ride.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
coelacanth:

haha! that's great! i'd have kept that too.
- and at least it was de la soul!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
coelacanth:

i've wondered what my first song would be if i got a show. even if my selections had no significance at all after that i feel i'd want it to be somehow special.
Avatar 2:49pm
Mayuko:

Will be listening til the end but off the comment board, thank you Tony and have a good day all!
Avatar 2:50pm
Tony Coulter:

See you, Mayuko! Thanks for showing up -- even though you weren't wearing fetish wear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
coelacanth:

hey wait, what?! should i have looked at the invite more closely?

...ciao Mayuko
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm
coelacanth:

Thanks Tony Excellent program!
Avatar 3:01pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, coelacanth!

And thanks for showing up, everyone. See you next week....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:01pm
listener james from westwood:

I think of De La Soul and my early FMU experiences, I think of the dearly departed Raymond Franks, who was on when I began listening in the early 90s. (Tony, IIRC you were Mondays at noon then.)

Either way, glad to have you in 2016; thanks for the show!!
Avatar 3:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, James!!

Monday at noon is correct!
