Therese, Bringer of Happiness! How are you doing tonight?
  12:10am
Carmichael:

Heya Therese. So the Carpenters were Klaatu? I thought Klaatu was a Beatles side project ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12am
Matt from Springfield:

Nick Lowe, this rocks!

Hiya Therese and everyone!
  12:14am
Carmichael:

This Bangles song also rocks. Where you goin with that UB40 in your hand?
  12:15am
famous original italianicewolf:

Helllooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: The "UB40" [Unemployment Benefits form 40] that the band named themselves after? Wow, I was *just* about to joke that since Thatcher's day a lot of people in Liverpool can do nothing the rest of their lives - I caught the subtext and didn't even know it!
  12:17am
Carmichael:

You got it, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18am
Matt from Springfield:

Sweet, Carm! That can be rare on a first listen to me!

Hi italianicewolf! Sounds refreshing on a month like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am
coelacanth:

what? the carpenters covered klaatu?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am
coelacanth:

...and, hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20am

is this the weird covers show?!

John Sebastian x Kate Bush's "Coffee Homeground" = THIS! :D

Bob in DC and/or Virginia:

Good morning, Therese and all Thereseans around the world!

The Julie Ruin song is especially appropriate -- Sunday was the 25th anniversary of Ms. Hanna holding the first official meeting of Riot Grrrl in an activist group home in Arlington, Virginia (according to Sara Marcus' book Girls to the Front). The house has since been replaced by a much more expensive one.

“Summer in the City” yeeesh. Hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi coela! Actually I first heard the Carpenters version, Therese even had a premium "We Are Your Friends" based on it a few years ago.

Hi Bob! Jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am
coelacanth:

hey Matt!
...that premium sounds good.
  12:28am
Carmichael:

King Kahn is THE MAN!

Karaoke Follies with Therese and Joe McG!
  12:31am
Carmichael:

Could be worse. You could have chosen MacArthur Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am
Matt from Springfield:

I wonder if they cut out the long instro breaks in the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" - if they don't I want to interpolate "Rainy Days and Mondays" into the instro fadeout. I consider that a spiritual ancestor to "How Soon Is Now".
  12:33am
famous original italianicewolf:

Follies like Ziegfeld? Or the Sondheim musical?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33am
Therese:

I was thinking Ziegfeld, but Sondheim would work too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34am
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: I imagine performing that at karaoke like SCTV's "Mel's Rock Pile" :)

Mar 30, 1867, the US signs a treaty with Russia to purchase Alaska. It became known as Seward's Folly.

When was the last political “Folly?” It could have been “H. Ross Perot’s Folly” when he ran in the 1990s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am
coelacanth:

i know when the next one is...
  12:50am
JakeGould:

Dude, Trump *is* a candidate and will be on the ballot. H. Ross Perot was a clown and didn’t get far. But anyway…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
Matt from Springfield:

There have been other disaster campaigns since then (the wretched Trump), but none have been as light, with singing and dancing since Perot and Stockdale's "follies"...
  12:52am
JakeGould:

Just getting used to the idea the new DNC chair for the convention is named Fudge. Who is named Fudge?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52am
coelacanth:

if it's either trump or clinton it will be a folly; but then, it already IS one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56am
Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: I'm guessing Rep. Marcia Fudge? I've heard of her before. She's from outside Cleveland, wonder if Dave Hill knows her!

Then again, would it really hurt to nominate Judy Blume as the convention chair?
  12:57am
JakeGould:

“Who doesn’t love Fudge!” (Paid for by the Committee to Elect Marcia Fudge to Congress)
