Finally got reasonable headphone replacement. A week spent with crap 'phones is like being killed with fire death all the time forever. I have spoken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am

Enjoy, Rev! I'm sure it sounds like a whole new world now.
Avatar 9:15am

@Rev-Glad you have sonic joy now...well, what did you get? Sony?
Avatar 9:16am

Beats by dre?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am
rsj:

alexa plays wfmu, sounds like crap, but she plays it. i guess i'll get a spot when they find some more to sell
Avatar 9:19am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

The shocking thing is how expensive utter crap headphones are. Borrowed some Sennheisers (retail: $110-150) and they're all hollow midrange, like hearing stuff through a 3-yard concrete tube. And yet I can't stand super-bass-enhancing 'phones, so this process is stupid big drama.
Avatar 9:21am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I understand "beats by dre" fall into that super-bass-enhancing category. Haven't had the pleasure....
Avatar 9:22am
Chris from DC:

Yes, just got new ones yesterday. They are crappy. This is disappointing.
Avatar 9:23am
bobdoesthings:

@revTD - yeh I was semi-teasing about beats by dre.. I've heard there is like 1 or 2models which are alright if you'r into a more DJ/bassy/hiphop sound. but for the most part they are overpriced and gimmicky.. I found this one blog called "Inner Fidelity" where a guy does tons and tons of headphones reviews.. for an ignoramus like myself, I find it super helpful. however it's all that one dude's opinion.
Avatar 9:24am
Cecile:

I just get those $20 Sonys. They work for me.
I also think you can't go wrong with those under $100 Koss headphones.
Avatar 9:25am
Cecile:

but I'm not a professional musician and my hearing's a little f'd up through tinnitus and vertigo and other BS.
Avatar 9:26am
Wild Neil:

I'm telling you, Sony makes good ones that are cheap. At least mine are...MDR-XD100's...paid $15 for them on Newegg, now they are no longer produced and go for like $60 on Amazon...or more....the driver is tilted to point right at my earhole....so L vs R really matters....It plays bass, mid and treble fairly equally....but I can hear people talking nearby so the cans do not totally isolate me, only drawback....I am super super picky and most headphones hurt me, but not these....get the full ear coverage ones, NOT buds or the mini ones, they suck.
Avatar 9:26am
Chris M.:

buying headphones is super easy if you know how to read a frequency response graph
Avatar 9:27am
Wild Neil:

@Chris M....should it be fairly flat then?
Avatar 9:27am
Cecile:

whatever.
Avatar 9:28am
Chris M.:

@Wild Neil: yeah. but you have to look at the dropoffs as well and decide what you're willing to lose.
Avatar 9:29am
bobdoesthings:

mehh, as allured as I am to get nice headphones..my $25 sennheisers at work with the crusty foam pads have been fine for years.. even though the right side had to be wrapped in a foot or two of gaffers tape.
Avatar 9:29am
Wild Neil:

OH...so Chris are you saying a headphone is biased toward either bass or treble one must drop off? Or something else?
Avatar 9:29am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

Amazing how much a decent pair of headphones contributes to daily quality of life. World's best Flintstones Chewable Vitamin.™
Avatar 9:30am
Rev. Turnip Druid:

that, plus this here stream thing.
Avatar 9:30am
Chris M.:

@Wild Neil: no, i meant that no headphones are perfect. but you can get quality speakers in your headphones for much less than what you guys are talking about
Avatar 9:31am
Cecile:

I like good enough headphones. Also, unless you are spending a fortune, nothing works on the bus. This is where minimalist music is key.
Avatar 9:31am
Wild Neil:

This Sutcliffe Jugend sounds like a science fiction movie....
Avatar 9:31am

Yeah, don't pay for the name.
Avatar 9:32am
Cecile:

Everything is science fiction.
And I oughta know.
Avatar 9:33am
bobdoesthings:

from what I understand the best sound from headphones come from open-ear headphones.. but those are the worst for public use because a lot of sound escapes.

I saw Neil Hamburger do a set between Laddio Bollocko and Trans Am in Minneapolis a long time ago. I used to drink crap coffee and not care. Then I got a machine at home and started messing around with various coffees. Now, its not so much that I can't drink bad coffee, I'm just so used to making it strong, that I can't stomach watery coffee. Even in fancy places with nice coffee, more than half the time, it tastes like water and I can't stand it. So unless there is a place nearby where I know they make it strong, I get black tea.

@cecile - yahh.. I know they used condensed milk. too sweet for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am

I'll draw the line at milk: coffee should be black as midnight on a moonless night

@Rev: Go late at night because the line is INSANE during the day and not worth it. But the coffee/beignets are good.

@Fred-I sincerely think its good advice for me...thanks Chris!
Café Bustelo, available at Wal Mart, Aldi and Tops supermarkets for $3.35 for 10 oz (about 283 grams)...it is Cuban style, and reminds my wife of growing up under martial law in Poland in 1981...Two sugar, three creams for me...
