Dynamic Algerian seven-piece Democratoz, from Oran, the country's cultural capital, is at
its essence a reggae band. But their music draws on elements of Oran's famous rai music as well as other pop and traditional styles from the Maghreb,
sub-Saharan African music, rock, and more. They're also inspired by classic reggae's (often) socially conscious lyrical spirit.
Democratoz wraps up their first US tour, supported by NEFA and the US State Department's cultural exchange
initiative Center Stage, with several dates in California through August
5th. And they make their first-ever full-band radio appearance right here on WFMU!
Big thanks to tour manager Theresa Teague, Robert W. Henderson for tour production assistance, Deirdre Valente and Lisa Booth of Lisa Booth Managment, and of course to our illustrious
engineer, Mark Koch,

For 50 years Mahmoud Ahmed has deftly combined the traditional Amharic music of Ethiopia with pop and jazz, yielding some of the most adventurous, passionate, ear-opening, downright surrealistic sounds. Undeniably Ethiopia’s most famous singer of its golden era (circa late 60s / early 70s), still going strong today.
