Jeff, this is funny. Check the *date* of this playlist:

Good morning. I'll be staying in this afternoon, by my destination is out. How does this work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am
Jeff Golick:

WHOA. That is freaky, @UM, and totally coincidental! Really!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am
Uncle Michael:

Who will now be forced to use that gif on July 31, 2017?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am
Jeff Golick:

Just keep your tray table in the upright position, @fred, and all should be fine. Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am
Uncle Michael:

The honor is to serve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am
Uncle Michael:

Nice stereo mix today, Jeff. I'd say the balance skews a bit left. (assuming my channels aren't swapped)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am
Jeff Golick:

Aha, thanks. @UM. That might just be this cut, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am
Uncle Michael:

For reference, I've got piano/right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am
Jeff Golick:

Perfect - me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am
Jeff Golick:

I think I just decided to honor the late Charles Davis by playing a cut on which he doesn't appear. Ugh. (I have many takes of this tune, is what it is.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am
coelacanth:

good morning Jeff and OUTies

Hello and good morning to you, @coelacanth and @Revolution Rabbit Nov63!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am
coelacanth:

i heard the tail of "cell walk for celeste" but i'll be revisiting that a few times.
10-12 years ago i heard it and decided to buy it but couldn't find a used copy within miles of affordable. i've never checked the wfmu advanced search but this is the first time i've heard it since then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am
Jeff Golick:

@coelacanth: this here - www.discogs.com... - should do you right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am
coelacanth:

...oh, that was "take 8", so- i guess nycr&b has been re-released? with extra tracks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
coelacanth:

{like 2 ships passing in the night...}

Thanks!

...and, rest in peace Charles Davis, who i will say i'm not familiar with, except the name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
Jeff Golick:

Those 1960 "Nat Hentoff sessions" for Candid were recently put together in a box. Great to have it all in one place after having been sporadically available in different configurations over the years, with wildly date-inappropriate cover shots of Cecil.

Peter from DE:

Good morning all. Jeff, we are mind-melded today. You just played tracks from the first Ibrahim and the first Muhal that I ever acquired. Both tracks so sad/happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Peter - happy to be melded with you today!
And they say the 1980s were a bad decade for jazz...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Peter from DE:

If you play the first track from Dino Betti van der Noot's Here Comes Springtime that will push things over the top. (check it out if you don't know it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
coelacanth:

that's a great set and a great price for all you get. i do already have at least 1/2 of the material though, on "jumpin' punkins" and "the world of Cecil Taylor".
...what to do...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:47am
Peter from DE:

Plenty of great 80s jazz once you get past the "young lions"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am

@Peter: I don't know it! Totally new name to me; will look for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am
Uncle Michael:

Definitely left-leaning balance, Jeff.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:53am

That 1985 Soul Note DBvdN album is his best. Imagine a cross between Nino Rota and Ellington (which is not a bad description of Muhal)

I actually liked that Dylan track (I'm not a Dylan fan at all though)

Hey all, looks like I missed some great sets, have to catch up in the archives. Having seen Ekaya many times, I heard Davis play often in the 80s. Sorry to hear about his passing.

Did Peggy Lee do a different version of this song? Could swear she did a more upbeat version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jeff Golick:

We would also have accepted "re-envisioning," yes. Thanks, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am
Jeff Golick:

Hey hey, @doctorjazz! I'm not aware of a different Peggy Lee rendition, but would happily hear it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:54am

My bad, same version, I just remembered it differently.
Don't know if you fixed that balance issues, sounds pretty centered through my phone/headphones.

Good day Jeff and other backsliders.

Woke up to some soothing Bud Powell this morning.

Some strange att(etudes) going down here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
coelacanth:

i didn't know there were 2 Peggy Lees in music. i happen to think highly of the singer Peggy Lee's singing. direct, on target - not a lot of showing off; just tonal quality, phrasing, passion, power and what seems like a natural ability to sing on key.
- she's Awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: Thanks to Uncle Michael, I was able to move from 1-channel broadcasting (!!) to 2-channel, which helps immensely. There might be some residual balance issues (that he's heard during the show), but overall a massive improvement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
Uncle Michael:

I just checked and in my headphones, the balance seems fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
Jeff Golick:

Hallo, @Brian in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am
Jeff Golick:

@coel: yah, I always thought that being the "other" Peggy Lee would be a huge handicap for a musician, but she's holding on to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
fred:

Years ago, waiting to get into a venue for a show, I overheard excited guys saying Donna Summer would be playing at a small club. I thought it would be WFMU's (aka Jason Forrest) and sure enough it was. At least I guess Peggy Lee isn't afraid of a lawsuit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
Jeff Golick:

I think it's her actual name, @fred! Which I don't believe one can copyright.

One of my favorite little gags on the show "30 Rock" was Liz Lemon's would-be husband, Wesley Snipes, who was in fact a white British dude.
  11:19am
Dean:

Can't copyright, but can trademark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am

@Jeff: Indeed, Dean is correct. There have been many cases. A bunch involving McDonald's, others about people whose names happened to match a presidential ticket
