@paul: It's riffing on 'Don't Let Me Down' by the Fabs. It's interesting to hear the Wailers in that *real* early Studio One stuff riffing on the Beatles & U.S. Soul like Motown - just like everybody else.

intelligent lyrics Bad Religion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am

Formulars Nigerian apparently.
Madonna got exalted by Deconstructionists & PostModernists as being Relevant w/out being Musical - & I think she did influence the Brittney Spears & Dance Pop a lot. Like the Sonic Youth talk the previous week - I think her time is just Not Now. Was said Sonic Youth saved the Guitar from 1,000 TV commercials just by tuning it differently...but Now we are in a whole different phase in Time & Culture in terms of what Guitar means...
The doors - surely overrated by Iggy & Bowie & the Bunnymen, ferinstance - but nevermind that one again...Bad Religion! Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am
ChrisB.:

Most overrated: A tie between Coldplay and Radiohead.
  11:38am

@ChrisB, I always give Radiohead the nod there. It's close.

I also vote Coldplay for overrated.

ChooChoo - ATL:

Can "Overrated" indicate a band or artist that was terrifically popular for a moment, but jut did not gel with oneself? Two examples that come first to my mind are Beck and Blink-182.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Remember when the Strokes were the latest Saviors of GuitarRawk for one minute?
Anybody Really Popular is overrated compared to deserving LesserKnowns. That makes the Beatles the most Overrated Ever by default. They might also be - Rated Incorrectly - for the wrong things in misunderstood ways...Springsteen gets a lot of that, ferinstance...

Okay - Popular distinct from Rated - tho' not mutually exclusive...
If you say SRV rivaled Hendrix - that's overrated. I loved seeing him tho' - not hugely original (it is Blues, after all) - but he dug deep every time he played.
Ringo is a Cramps fan - he knows! Take Richard Thompson - rated superhigh by us - under-recognized as the Treasure he is by most everyone...
Chuck a genius poet. Oh - I read 'Wilco' as 'TheWho' - I was gonna get physical...Elvis C. intelligent awlright - sometimes I hear him writing a littel self-consciously, but Classic. Good catch.

DG:

Totally agree with EGould on Nirvana vs. Husker Du. HD was doing the whole "punk w/melody & literate lyrics" thing years before "Nevermind" (& hardly any critics seem to remember that), & Mould continued that w/Sugar. Nirvana made one very good album but I still think were more of a metal band, and sometimes too dissonant & adolescent for their own good. HD's albums (esp. from "Flip Your Wig" on) are much more thoughtful, tuneful, etc. And yes, Los Lobos are underrated too. (An amazing band live as well).
  12:18pm
paul:

Agree with Los Lobos live!
  12:18pm
DG:

Yep on Zappa too. Has all these amazing instrumentals & classical pieces, & probably 90% of rock "fans" just know him as the guy who sings about dental floss & yellow snow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

HuskerDu were Nirvana before Nirvana awlright! - altho' I think Kurt wrote really well & they brought it Live. Nirvana touched some nerve or wire - hard to quantify something like that. That they veered off into Chaos & still seemed to make the Show was part of the whole thing...
