Glad you said Hi since I forgot to double check I was on the air

Welcome back, Jeff, and hey hey, all!

It's the sound of Miles Davis selling out!
Avatar 12:07pm
jeff-m:

hi all. Thanks for hanging for a bit. Be hear for 4 hours today.

This is my go-to Miles for getting people to leave my office
Avatar 12:08pm
jeff-m:

yeah, seems kinda funny to say about something that's pretty challenging compared to most music
  12:10pm
Michael Pollak:

Great stuff. I'm embarrassed to say I don't know this album. Beats hell out of Bitch's Brew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Jeff Golick:

"Black Beauty was recorded on April 10, 1970, at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, when Davis performed as the opening act for the Grateful Dead."
Avatar 12:14pm
jeff-m:

I'm no expert myself.
It's a gatefold so when I peaked the awesome photo I had to have it.

Ah cool. Thanks Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
doctorjazz:

Hi all. Nice opening, such energy on this!
Just a note-my web page doesn't have the pop up player on it (had to open Amanda's page to get it), minor, but figured I'd let you know. It's the only way I can listen to the stream at the office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
coelacanth:

Miles did some pretty cheezy stuff after this that i would, with a certain degree of ignorance, think more of as him selling out....except i think it was more like Miles getting caught-up in the cheeze that was prevalent in the mid-late 70s and especially the 80s, rather than him selling out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
Uncle Michael:

I have a link to the pop-up player on the page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
Jeff Golick:

I see the pop-up link on my playlist page, fwiw. (wfmu.org...).

This Miles album wasn't released in the US until 1997!
Avatar 12:18pm
jeff-m:

that's when I bought it roughly. thought it was a bootleg at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Jeff Golick:

Miles basically sat out '76-80, and didn't start (to my ears) getting soggy until that 1980s comeback. Admittedly, I don't know those later albums well at all.
  12:19pm
Michael Pollak:

So I'm looking this up on Google Play, and I see two entries for Miles Live at the Fillmore West. One says Black Beauty: Live at the FW, the other just Fillmore West. But neither has a song named Black Beauty, never mind part 1. Is there a trick?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
doctorjazz:

Not me...I opened the page from the email, maybe that's the issue. Anyway, was able to get to it.

Actually, it's really weird. I have the "Give the Drummer Radio LIVE Audio Streams (Get Help)" sentence, then there is just a blank space. If I hover the mouse over the space after that line, the pop up player is there, but it doesn't show as it usually would.

Hola!!!! listening from work!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
coelacanth:

Michael P "black beauty" was technically a medley. the cd reissue separates it into individual titles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
Jeff Golick:

Yah, from wiki: Black Beauty was originally released only in Japan in 1973. It contained four side-long tracks spread across a double album, grouping the songs as medleys titled "Black Beauty Part I", "Black Beauty Part II", and so on, all of which credited Davis as the composer. He did not want the actual segments specified on the track listing out of a distaste for critics and listeners who arduously analyzed his music; according to DeJohnette's wife Lydia, "Miles really felt that critics and people spent too much time in their mental mind, analyzing and talking for hours about something that really just is." Columbia spent several years identifying some of the individual compositions to ensure royalty payment for the actual composers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
listener james from westwood:

@JeffG: Lydia neatly summed up why I didn't get a masters in English. Didn't want to hear beauty get talked to death and pinned to wax like a biology class frog any more than I already had.
  12:28pm
MONEYBAG$:

Haven't heard Sugar Plant in forever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
doctorjazz:

@UM...the sentence is there "on WFMU's..", but after the "(Get Help): it is just blank (the divider does appear that separates the pop-up and the 128k MP3, but the words pop up and 128 MP3 aren't there, just blank). As I said, when I hover the mouse indicates that the control is there, and if I copy/paste, the words appear. Weird.

Thanks very much, coelacanth.

I'm so glad to hear this show again. Relieved too: I lost my internet connection a short time before it started. Being in France in August, having the problem fixed after 6pm is a miracle.
Avatar 1:10pm
jeff-m:

hey Fred. Yeah, I always heard August is rough in France if you need something.

Amanda lost her mind and asked me to play. Then David had to take over for the pilot in his airplane, but flew west by accident... So I'll be here for a bit
  1:10pm
Michael Pollak:

Thanks to you to, Jeff Golick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
fred:

@jeff-m: Ha! August, and July, and December, and May. You also want to avoid early January, early September and late June.
  1:16pm
Dean:

I'm thinking doctorjazz's issue has to do with the fact that visited links on this page are set to "white" (not a hex number) whereas, for example, Duane's page setting is for #333366 ("Very dark desaturated blue"). Because doctorjazz has previously visited the pop-up, his browser either won't render the "white" value or it won't adequately distinguish the value from the (to my browser) gray background.
  1:18pm
Dean:

(Apologies for presumption of gender: "his.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Jeff Golick:

I think Dean's onto it re invisible pop-up hyperlink.
Avatar 1:21pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@doctorjazz: Can you reload the whole page and then confirm that you're still having the problem?
  1:24pm
Dean:

Heh, Ken changed the visited value to #ffffff, hex for white.
Avatar 1:24pm
jeff-m:

damn, gonna make me get my hex chart out
Avatar 1:25pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I also added # to the other color codes, which were missing them. It's possible a browser would interpret those wrong without pound signs.
  1:27pm
Dean:

Right. And some browsers are less forgiving than others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, HTML fans. We're on the other side of hump hour now.
Avatar 1:29pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Jeff M, this is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
doctorjazz:

The page changed to gray, now the pop up and 128k MP3 ARE visible (I'm a he, you can call me Jack). It was white writing on a white background, aha!
Avatar 1:31pm
jeff-m:

yeah, love that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
doctorjazz:

Enjoying the music, by the way!
Avatar 1:33pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It was the lack of pound signs. Glad it's better now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
fred:

Does all this talk mean it's hex enduction hour?
  1:33pm
Dean:

Ah, so it was the CCCCCC missing a #.

"Double, double, toil and trouble..."
Avatar 1:38pm
jeff-m:

whoops :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
fred:

@Dean: or maybe that the two extra Cs were confusing in this context. CCCC wouldn't be out of place on this show (though probably not right now)
  1:40pm
Dean:

@fred: Yeah, how come there isn't an HTML style property volume=#LOUD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
fred:

@Dean: because everyone would use it, always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm

Hello jeff-m.

@james ref your comment about literature and frogs. I agree but that may include my inherent laziness. To define is to destroy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm

Jeff i must depart. i'll hear this in the car for a while - could you play some sammy hagar? van halen? i know i can count on you for some bitchin' driving songs!

...Thank you! -Excellent as always.

Roy was part of one of the great underrated jazz combos of all time IMO--the Contemporary Jazz Quintet, who made two great albums on Blue Note. And he operated a very nice jazz club in Ann Arbor called the Bird of Paradise. Saw a lot of good shows there. "The Free Slave" is great, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
fred:

@Brian: literature and frogs? I'm intrigued, especially as I plan a major book run for tomorrow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Brian in UK:

@fred, james' comment at 12:28.

Just got Tolstoy's Kreutzer Sonata out of the library, a musical influence book, backwards to Beathoven and forwards to Janecek's Quartets.
On a Russian tip, must re-read Sholokov's Don trilogy, compelling. Not only could Russians scarf down drugs but they could write too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Jeff Golick:

Went to a bookstore last night to hear author Helen DeWitt read from her book, The Last Samurai, recently reissued by New Directions. There is, I understand, must music in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Jeff Golick:

(Not sure about frogs, though.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm

"Anyway, People Die" is an upbeat sentiment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm

@Jeff: you'd have to bring back the other D:O Jeff, then get Jeff Davison on board. I'll submit that Mayuko translates to Jeff in some language. I'll invent it if needed

Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
fred:

Current 93... He reminds me of someone I love who really likes his music, but still, I just can't take him seriously. So over the top he makes John Lydon look restrained (I guess the woman I alluded to would turn that statement around, and that would be fair)
Avatar 2:54pm
Mayuko:

I'll change my name to Jeff if the US government gives me citizenship and join the wjeffmu. I seem to remember you can do that when you become a citizen.
Avatar 2:55pm
Mayuko:

I wish you're staying til 5!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm
listener james from westwood:

Seconding Mayuko's call for 5!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm
fred:

That seems to be a thing over here too: I knew a woman who changed her first name from Savonn to Marion when she got naturalized. That was weird
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Lucky that the government doesn't assign names to newcomers, like in that movie where they gave someone the name Sam Francisco.
  3:04pm
Dean:

Brings to mind, for some reason, the story of US game show hosts Jack Narz and Tom Kennedy, who were brothers. (Kennedy is still alive.) Upon learning this, some unfortunate soul asked, "Which one changed his name?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
fred:

Then again, "savon" means "soap" in french, and she was tired of the jokes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
listener james from westwood:

@Fred: Alien Nation was that one! They had a TV show, too. James Caan and Mandy Patinkin sat out for that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
Stanley:

Ah, Ash Ra!
Avatar 3:12pm
Mayuko:

Mayuko becoming Jeff might be weird too, but it's more moderate than to change your name into Tibet I think. I just hope you're all ok with having yet another Jeff on WFMU.
Avatar 3:14pm
jeff-m:

I think your boyfriend would object, Mayuko

I knew a girl who was dating / engaged to David from c93. Perhaps her name would have been Jessica Tibet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
fred:

@Mayuko: As long as it's your show, I don't really care about the name
Avatar 3:18pm
Ike:

I was almost named Geoff. I'm glad that didn't happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
fred:

Also, is a guy who calls himself Genesis P-Orridge gave you a name, would you expect moderate? Tibet looks quite tame
Avatar 3:19pm
Mayuko:

Jessica Tibet doesn't sound right to me. David wasn't born with that name "Tibet" but it was given, no? Can all his family member call themselves Tibet if they wanted to? What do they have to do with Tibet anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Artie Haywire:

Lumerians reminding me of The LimiƱanas. Which is a very good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
fred:

What does Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has to do with logic or sense?
Avatar 3:23pm
jeff-m:

I forgot what his real last name is anymore. Went through a few diff last names, that one stuck in the mid to late 80's. Doesn't bring a picture of anything in my mind anymore.

Gen's is a stylized 'porridge' i always heard... from being a broke artist. Not too sure anymore.
  3:26pm
Dean:

Avatar 3:29pm
Mayuko:

@fred haha! the US gov should hire Genesis to assign names to newcomers just for irrational fun. Although I probably won't get Jeff that way.
Avatar 3:31pm
jeff-m:

wonder if he has citizenship himself after all these years?
Avatar 3:36pm
jeff-m:

getting a bit a tired- gonna have my self a Spectrum frenzy for a bit. Thanks everyone for hanging out and listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
fred:

Himself? I think s/he's saying s/he's beyond genders now. Which might be an issue with government forms. I saw them both playing a few years before she died, and I thought it was just sad. He looked like an old man with breasts, she looked raw and frankly not the equal part s/he has put forward
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
fred:

But I thought you would keep going up to 5, by popular acclaim?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
doctorjazz:

Thanks for the show, been enjoying it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
fred:

Another track that reminds me of B.A.D.'s Rush for no reason I can think of
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

Now thinking of an all-Jeff musicians show. Three hours of Jeff "Tain" Watts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
