Good morning, everyone! I hope your week is off to a nice start. I currently don't have any skin because I sweated it off last night.
Avatar 9:39am fred:

Good morning Joe and all. I'm really looking forward to the live set. Prince Rama seem to be very nice people as well as a great live band

oh dang.. I guess Big Youth - "Cool Breeze" is just Big Youth singing over this song.. hahaha. dang. i learned something today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Michael:

Swag received Joe – thanks much.
Avatar 9:59am fred:

So there was a reissue. That explains why Lizzy Mercier Descloux has been getting so much airplay lately. That was weird for me because "Mais où sont passées les gazelles?" was such a huge, unavoidable, hit back then over here
Avatar 10:00am Joe McG:

@fred: Yeah, LITA reissued all of her records over here this year. @Michael: You bet!
  10:03am JakeGould:

Hey Joe! And everyone else.
Avatar 10:04am Joe McG:

Hey Jake! Quiet board today, which I'm going to take as a signal that no one is tuned in today and I can play my classic rock favorites!

Avatar 10:10am Joe McG:

@melinda: But you're just in time for the Meat Loaf!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Devin B.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Greg from ZONE 5:

Yo Joe!
I swear my office gets louder every week. Gotta PUMP THE LOAF to drown it out…

@Marc: That means it's gonna be a great week!
  10:14am SeanG:

love it. :-) Hi Joe and all!

  10:16am SeanG:

Avatar 10:16am Wild Neil:

Oh, well, Billy Squire. He was pretty cool.
  10:16am SeanG:

gonna turn this UP
Avatar 10:16am Joe McG:

Ooh, Styx! That's a good idea, Wild Neil!
Avatar 10:16am Jim Devoid:

'Ello Squire!
Avatar 10:16am Roberto:

Joe, did you happen to spend the last two weeks listening to Sirius XM Classic Rewind as I did?
Avatar 10:17am Wild Neil:

I'm gonna party like it's 1984.
  10:17am Cooh John:

Mebbe Kansas...
Avatar 10:17am Roberto:

REO, Billy Squier, Pat Benatar...the signs are unmistakable.
Avatar 10:17am Joe McG:

@Roberto: No, but maybe that will be my favorite new show!
Avatar 10:17am Wild Neil:

It's throwback Monday.
Avatar 10:18am Roberto:

Up next -- Eddie Money.
  10:18am Blix:

Joe, did you re-watch Streets of Fire or go roller-skating or something last night?
  10:18am Polyus:

Bobby Chouinard with that big backbeat.
  10:19am melinda:

It's fun to hear Billy Squier in a new context.
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

OOH, Eddie Money. Loves me some Eddie Money! @Blix: No, but I wish I had. I really want to go roller skating.
Avatar 10:20am Roberto:

This song was played so frequently that my daughter got it stuck in her head. And she wasn't happy about it at all. Death metal more her speed.
  10:20am Wally:

Bad Co. please
Avatar 10:21am Wild Neil:

This Kix sounded like REM for a few bars....
  10:21am SeanG:

i hope clay is listening
Avatar 10:23am βrian:

Death Metal always makes me think of Minimata Bay.
Avatar 10:23am Cheri Pi:

Eddie Money is playing here soon, and I'm so tempted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Tim 07030:

Hey Joe! Has Rocktober come early?
Avatar 10:24am Rev. Turnip Druid:

[back from meeting, checks playlist]
....shewt... dodged some bullets there...
Avatar 10:25am bobdoesthings:

wow.. this took a turn.
Avatar 10:27am βrian:

Sounds like he was channelling Roger Ailes.
  10:27am yoshi:

was chris rock talking as part of this song a minute or so ago, or am i bugging?
Avatar 10:27am Wild Neil:

This Kix sounds a bit like Devo now.
Avatar 10:28am Roberto:

Oh right, they played Styx quite a lot as well.
  10:28am Cooh John:

There you go, Wild Neil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Ken From Hyde Park:

I keep getting Kix mixed up with Kick Axe.
Avatar 10:28am Wild Neil:

This song actually rocks. I find myself singing it un-ironically all the time. I admit it. It resonated with me then, and it resonates now. I cannot deny this. I feel like this is an 80's Intervention.
Avatar 10:28am Joe McG:

@Cheri: Go see Eddie!
Avatar 10:28am βrian:

"In the craw" was my favorite album.
  10:29am XimbyZ:

I'm not gonna lie. I was about to turn off the Kix but, luckily Styx appeared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Stevel:

Last night I had the weirdest dream that WFMU was playing the best of the 80's rocking pop. Crazy, huh?
  10:29am melinda:

80s intervention, haha
  10:30am SeanG:

some loverboy would be sweet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Tim 07030:

Until this moment I never noticed how much this song sounds like "Lonely Boy"
Avatar 10:30am Wild Neil:

Blue Collar man, relseased in 1978 on the Pieces of Eight album....this song rocks hard.....they are so sincere in rocking out it is contagious.
Avatar 10:30am Joe McG:

Oh, I forgot my Loverboy LP AND my Eddie Money! Bummer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Stevel:

Total bummer.
Avatar 10:31am βrian:

Which hip-hop artist has sampled Styx the most, I wonder?
Avatar 10:32am Wild Neil:

Eddie Money does rock...cannot STAND Loverboy...didn't like it then, don't like it now.
Avatar 10:33am Wild Neil:

@Joe-would that be WZZO in Allentown, 95.1?? I grew up listening to that in Blairstown, NJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Greg from ZONE 5:

@βrian: www.whosampled.com...
  10:34am JakeGould:

I like meatloaf the food.
Avatar 10:34am Wild Neil:

I heard Meat Loaf sang opera....
Avatar 10:34am thedunkel:

I only love my Mom's meatloaf…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am jillydg:

Blue Collar Man, rockin! And a great surprise even REO and Meatloaf. Still know every word... Crazy how those lyrics plants themselves in the ol noggin'.
Avatar 10:34am βrian:

Joe, that's not pronounced "Rio" Speedwagon??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Barney Grubbs:

looks like The Alchemist and DJ Huggy are tied in the styx-sampling stakes
Avatar 10:35am Wild Neil:

@Brian-its Are-EE-OH Speedwagon.
Avatar 10:36am βrian:

Wow, even Cage's 4'33" was sampled twice!
Avatar 10:37am BEAVO:

Pat Benatar is on tour right now with longtime husband Neil Geraldo on guitar
Avatar 10:37am βrian:

I gotta stick with "Rio." Just seems ore gleeful to me.
Avatar 10:38am Wild Neil:

Billy Rooth liked Angel....they are glam rock...he had dreams of being a rock star...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am jillydg:

On a hot summer night...
Avatar 10:39am Joe McG:

I love the name DJ Huggy. Too bad it's taken. @BEAVO: Nice to hear! I should go see her.
Avatar 10:40am Wild Neil:

OK, I am bailing for awhile....
  10:40am melinda:

Which girl group sang this?
Avatar 10:41am Rev. Turnip Druid:

ANGEL... speaking of clay pigeon, he's the one that hepped me to their insane logo design (reads same upside down) -- being a typography nerd, I appreciate this to an un-natural degree..
Avatar 10:41am BEAVO:

Punky's Whips!
Avatar 10:42am Joe McG:

@melinda: I know the Rascals version best, but I'm sure someone else did it. Wikipedia says the Divinyls!
  10:42am Dean:

One of the two loudest concerts I ever endured: Angel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Guido from Cologne:

Hello Joe
Avatar 10:43am Joe McG:

@Dean: What was the other?
Avatar 10:45am βrian:

You want is wont to wander.
  10:45am Dean:

At the risk of going all Abbott & Costello, Yes. At a stadium.
Avatar 10:46am βrian:

Eh, "Your want is wont to wander."
  10:46am Dean:

To establish a baseline, I've heard Mogwai in a club. Not all that loud. Meshuggah in clubs, loud, but not painfully so. Etc.
Avatar 10:47am βrian:

Anne Boleyn got off easy, right Dean?
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

Hey Guido! @Dean: Wow, Yes were loud? That surprises me for some reason.
  10:48am Dean:

@βrian: Any day is a good day for Henrician humor.

@Joe McG: Yes, they were. The culprit was Moraz's tizzy synthesizers blasting across centerfield. I'd heard Yes before and since, but nothing like that.
Avatar 10:49am βrian:

Beware the freelance sound person for thine ears shall be laid waste to.
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

@Brian: Maybe you need to contract disco fever.
Avatar 10:54am fred:

I'd say the loudest show I ever attended was Borbetomagus
Avatar 10:56am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@fred: aye, here as well. I caught Borbetomagus at DC Space here in the mid '80s. It would have to be a top three for loudest...
  10:56am Dean:

@fred: I think I heard that show, and I didn't even attend.
Avatar 10:58am βrian:

I think the loudest for me was actually a film showing, when Dan Savage brought Hump to town.
Avatar 10:58am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe, hot and steamy over hear.
Avatar 10:59am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Merzbow at DC Arts Center, late '80s... Of course Motörhead...
Avatar 11:00am Joe McG:

@BrianUK: Pretty much the same here, Brian! I can't do it. My Loudest Band: Spiritualized at a small club in the 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Stevel:

Yes, Motörhead. White Zombie was loud for an arena (sitting in the back.)
Avatar 11:01am fred:

A Stephen O'Malley solo show in a museum came close. Strangely or not, Sun O))) don't strike me as loud, it's more like a massage
Avatar 11:01am Brian in UK:

I only go to poetry readings with my friend Rik. They can get a bit raucous.
Avatar 11:02am KP:

Is it safe yet?
Avatar 11:03am KP:

Avatar 11:03am βrian:

See, I think it's usually some local sound board person the band hires, since they don't want to pay someone to tour with them. Someone with 80% hearing loss. I dunno.
  11:05am Dean:

A sound board engineer with hearing loss reminds me of a long-gone local cafe that hired a sight-impaired diabetic as a chef.
Avatar 11:06am βrian:

And for some reason, these sound people always seem to have huge sagittal crests and pronounced occipital ridges.
Avatar 11:06am Brian in UK:

@Dean did it have a one-armed waiter too?
  11:06am SeanG:

loudest show was Triumph mid80s
  11:08am Polyus:

I think the current incarnation of Swans beats anything I have heard in the volume sweepstakes. It's a weird sort of loud, though - not shrill, not low. Right in the midrange.
  11:08am Brendan:

My loudest show was The Who. Four friends and I showed up at our nosebleed seats only to discovered two very drunk guys had barfed all over the whole row and passed out. A security lady got on the walkie talkie then escorted us front row in front of Petes amp My ears are still ringing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Devin B.:

Nice! Hurry Up is awesome!
  11:13am Dean:

@Brian in UK: No, but a friend of mine was a server there for a time. If a fussy local patron complained he would break wind when leaving the table.
  11:14am Dean:

This was at a time well before the days of "Jackass."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Greg from ZONE 5:

D'oh! Gonna miss Prince Rama cuz I've got Mothra tix. Hopefully I'll make Electric Six.
Avatar 11:15am Brian in UK:

Led Zeppelin 1975 Earls Court, London. HALF WAY BACK. Ears stopped humming at one o'clock the next day. First time I had seen a big screen next to the stage.

It is the anniversary today of The Beatles playing Shea Stadium in 1965 in effect the first time a stadium was used for a music gig.
Avatar 11:15am Brian in UK:

@Dean classy. Noisy or silent but deadly?
  11:16am Brendan:

What? I cant hear you
Avatar 11:18am KP:

Brendan, i saw the Happy Jack era Who when i was 14. Fourth row. right ear never recovered.
  11:18am Dean:

@Brian in UK: Very classy. SBD. Being mere youth, we were of course enchanted with the scatological. We envisioned creating an SBD Mime Troupe. Now, of course, I'm all grown up. But fortunately my kids aren't.
Avatar 11:18am βrian:

Prince Rama: princerama.com
  11:19am Brendan:

Wiki says Guinness World Records no longer celebrate loudest bands 'for fear of promoting damage to ears'
Avatar 11:20am KP:

Prince Rama sounds exciting
Avatar 11:21am Brian in UK:

@Dean Les Petomane Brothers. Blowing out candles from one yard and setting light etc. Timeless fun.
Only grown-ups listen to WFMU.
Avatar 11:21am KP:

Well Brendan some fun has been taken out of it since earplugs have become almost standard.
  11:21am Brendan:

@kp id give my right ear to see them
Avatar 11:23am Wild Neil:

Miinistry in the late 80's in NYC was super-loud. Also: a dude wearing an SS shirt picked me up by a belt loop and threw me about eight or ten feet. He was like 6'8". At this point, I left the pit and went upstairs to watch from the balcony. I wanna say Roseland ballroom?
  11:23am JakeGould:

This Prince Rama is pretty damned good.
Avatar 11:23am KP:

Haaaa! I did. Absolutely amazing. Right in front of Townshend.
Avatar 11:23am βrian:

Which brings up the Petomane Freeway:
Avatar 11:23am fred:

Prince Rama shows are well worth attending. They're a great live band with a contagious positive attitude.
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@Jake: It's going to be a great show on Thursday! They are also in Asbury Park on Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Carmichael:

My loudest concert was Steppenwolf. Stood in front of a speaker stack on one side of the stage. My ears are still ringing, and the concert was in the 70s ...
Avatar 11:25am KP:

Sound levels are different though since PAs started being so effective. everything goes through them. The intense physical presence of the stacks is not there.
  11:25am Brendan:

Its funny that we put plugs in our ears to listen to music, like putting bumps on the roads we drive.or the people who live in front of those speed bumps wearing earplugs because of the angry motorists honking. Its a vicious cycle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Tim 07030:

And if you're going to the show Thursday I recommend getting there in time to see the opener, Hey Anna (THREE sisters in this band). I saw them for the first time last month and they were tremendous.

A word of warning about Prince Rama shows: you might end up hugging strangers
Avatar 11:28am KP:

There are no strangers at wfmu
Avatar 11:30am Wild Neil:

Does Prince Rama like Styx?
  11:31am βrian:

Steppenwolf? Were they playing in a dumpy bar on Dort Hwy, Flint, Michigan?
  11:34am Brendan:

A stranger is just someone I haven't hugged yet.

Ground hog=marmot. Marmota Monax.
@Brendan-they did, but Devo stole the package off the porch and took their hats and called them Energy Domes. NoT!

Furthermore: Bootsy. Dumb autocorrect.

@Ken: Don't worry. Yes, it was Bootsy and Q-Tip on that remix. I like it better than the LP version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Greg from ZONE 5:

Agreed, Joe. Bootsy & Q-Tip make perfect songs better.

I'm thinking of ducking out for a triple espresso, but I fear I'll need something stronger.

This show was literally all over the place today. Really. Wow. Talk about free form.

Has Bootsy considered making a “Bootsie Roll?” I mean, Tootsie Rolls are kinda grandparent candy nowadays… They need to tap into that lucrative youth market again.
Avatar 11:53am Brian in UK:

Great show, Joe. Hope you fans keep you cool.

I REALLY like Johnny Cash.

Like an iridescent amoeba, even! Thanks, Joe.
Avatar 11:53am fred:

So cool that Nimai would request Johnny Cash

Well, it's been a weird one, friends! Thanks for listening and commenting. Have a great week and see you again next Monday! Don't forget to check out Prince Rama.
Avatar 11:57am Wild Neil:

Prince Rama: Slip Into Nevermore is clicky star for me. Awesome!
  11:58am Dean:

Loudest Surface Noise ever!
Avatar 11:58am fred:

Damn, they're playing in Paris next month, but it's an overnight show. I know the drill and the venue: it's a three-hour walk through clumps of aggressive drunks to get back home

Thanks, Joe!
