Today’s show: The fifteenth edition of an annual late summer tradition: Rob Weisberg and longtime sidekick Katie Gentile play radio ping-pong, trading tracks back and forth. Rob, as you may know, is an unpaid radio DJ and record geek. Katie, on the other hand, is an academic, blogger, author, open-water swimmer and violinist in the band The Special Pillow.

Exciting new and recent developments: Katie’s second book, The Business of Being Made (Routledge) came out in January. The Special Pillow has a great new album out, At the Earth's Core. And the Special Pillow’s song Automatic Doom, penned by leader Dan Cuddy and arranged by the band, is covered by Yo La Tengo on their latest album Stuff Like That There - here’s Yo La Tengo performing Automatic Doom on national television.

Saw Albert Kuvezin and Yat-Kha, The Chieftans and Varttina at Summerstage in maybe 2000? Wow, what a concert. At the end they all were on stage together jamming.

Show's great fun tonight; that song "Save Some For Thee" was a real beauty (as is that whole LP Fearless). Going to see the Japanese Klezmer band Jinta-La-Mvta at an Irish bar in Somerville MA this Tuesday! Thanks for the endless inspiration you provide, Rob!

Katie, I concur and verify that Teenage Fanclub should get more love — on WFMU and elsewhere.

Hi, Rob & Katie. Been listening while moving around the house. Thanks for the tunes and conversation tonight. See you in a couple weeks.

go to bed ken
  9:48pm Zarathustra76:

What was the name of the "political" japanese band/song euppisedly about the 2011 earthquakes?
  12:03am Zarathustra76:

Soul Flower Union: Takashi Gujo
if anyone can find any links to videos or live versions of this i'd be grateful for the help :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Rob Weisberg:

Zarathustra76: If you see this response: This is the title in Japanese characters: キセキの渚 - if you search for that you'll find the album and at least one video.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Rob W:

Also (Zarathrustra76): If you noticed, I kinda hedged on saying exactly how that album responded to the earthquake - whether proceeds from album sales went toward earthquake relief, whether band members volunteered or helped recruit volunteers, helped raise funds in other ways etc. But Soul Flower Union and their associated “chindon” (street) band Soul Flower Mononoke Summit are known for their (generally left-leaning) socio-political engagement. I can also follow up with you further if you want to email me via the contact link on this page. Thanks for listening!
