Hey, first time listening on the app... I love the simple old school look :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks Tome! Songs that will make you smile tonight. And Welcome Jack! I like the app epecially for traveling outside the radio range.
  9:28pm
JakeGould:

Hey Irene! Was the pic on the playlist tonight taken from a ferris wheel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Mike East:

We had a carnival right outside our apartment all last week. My kids wanted to go every night, but I was able to limit it to two. Such a ripoff. I think we spent about 60 bucks on ride tickets alone, then of course there's zeppoles and games.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Santos L. Halper:

Hi Irene, sounding great tonight. thanks for the Stackridge
  9:43pm
P-90:

Good Evening Dear Irene.
I am really, really enjoying this.
  9:44pm
JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Was it like a regular NYC street fair? Like with sock vendors, cheap sunglasses vendors, zeppoles, sausages and such?
  9:46pm
herb.nyc:

Hi all. I am using voice to text, please excuse me. I just got back from a screening of Howard's ends at the film forum. Nice upper-class stuff, even though there was unprotected sex as well. Anyway, time for apple and peanut butter, and to listen to the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Irene Trudel:

Yes, Jake! We had stopped at the top, and fireworks were just starting (didn't get that into the shot thought. And, yeah, Mike. Those carnivals are so expensive!. Thanks Santos!
  9:49pm
P-90:

Just saying that I will not be commenting on unprotected sex in Howard's End
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm
Irene Trudel:

Hi herb! I like the Film Forum. They often show a lot of great films I'd forgotten existed. Never saw Howard's End though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Mike East:

@JakeGould - No, more suburban...San Sebastian Festival in Montclair. Zeppoles and sausages yes, socks and sunglasses, no...except maybe giant novelty sunglasses. I now have a large inflatable pink monkey in my home which cost me $5.
  9:51pm
Jack:

Is upper Manhattan in the radio range? I can never get it to receive cleanly here but not sure if that's down to my crap radio rather than geography...
  9:57pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

It's a lovely Tuesday evening! Hello everyone! Btw nice John Fahey bed music Irene

this is making me smile now !

Chucktown Dan:

saw this cat open up for blonde redhead in Chicago this spring. fuckin brought tears to my eyes.
  10:00pm
P-90:

@Jack: It's not your radio! Upper Manhattan is a bad teception zone these days. Best is to stream on the website.
  10:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Robyn!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Irene Trudel:

Robyn is the best!!
  10:03pm
P-90:

@Jack: there was a plan to add a new antenna in Manhattan that would have made all the difference, but FMU had to give up on that when it turned out to be unfeasable.

And yes, Robyn rocks
  10:04pm
JakeGould:

@MikeEast: “I now have a large inflatable pink monkey in my home which cost me $5.” That’s not too bad a price for an inflatable monkey.
  10:05pm
JakeGould:

This bird wants to be a cat so bad. youtu.be...
  10:07pm
Jack:

@P-90 Yeah I'm streaming on the app which is how this conversation started. :) Usually use the computer but it died and replacement is still on the way. Wish I could listen on the real radio here, oh well
  10:09pm
P-90:

@Jack: personally I think the digital stream is always going to sound best
  10:15pm
Jack:

@P-90 But the analog radio feels better :)
  10:17pm
Jack:

@Irene I'm near W. 120th and Amsterdam Ave in uptown Manhattan. Very little or no WFMU reception
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Irene Trudel:

P-90 and Jack, where are you located in Manhattan? Maybe we can get our engineer to tweak it if it's out of whack.
  10:17pm
herb.nyc:

(reception is fine in lower Manhattan). Oops, no apostrophe in Howards End. But plz use for safe sex. As for carnivals, it's always about the children (yay, my neice gave birth 3 days ago. I once took neice to see New Porn; I hope to take her son to shows)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Irene Trudel:

Jack, had you been able to tune in WFMU before? I know it does get spotty uptown.
  10:25pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, I kinda miss those Merchant Ivory films.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
melinda:

I liked Howard's End. I forget what else they did.
  10:32pm
herb.nyc:

Mr Ivory was at Friday screening, sold out. So I went tonight and about 30 there. 141 seats in all. Plz see Howard's Rear End (bad joke, sorry). (I just got Keanu DVD from library, meow!!)
  10:42pm
Jack:

@Irene no, reception here was never good... moved here a year and a half ago. I think it got even worse sometime in the last year. BTW you get extra love for playing Kurt Rosenwinkel :D
  10:45pm
Carmichael:

Heya Irene. On long vacation but finally able to listen and comment. Great setlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Irene Trudel:

Good to know Jack! We're trying to improve it a bit. BTW, Kurt is playing the Village Vanguard tonight and tomorrow night. Hi Carmichael!e enjoying the downtime.
  10:49pm
JakeGould:

@melinda: They’ve made a whole shitload of films such as “The Remains of the Day”, “A Room with a View”, and such. Such a class act compared to modern films. Man, I just said an old person thing! en.wikipedia.org...
  10:51pm
P-90:

@Jack, Im listening just a few blocks away from you. Station manager Ken had a deal in the works a few years ago to add a booster transmitter in midtown Manhattan, there was even a special 24-hour mini-marathon to raise funds for it (in 2010, I believe?) but the plan had to be scrapped for various reasons. So until something is worked out, broadcast reception here will stay poor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
melinda:

@Jake: I was thinking of a Room With a View, actually. But I did Howard's End, too. I also saw an early film of theirs that was filmed in India, I think. It's hazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
melinda:

I did *like* Howard's End. I didn't do Howard's End. sheesh.
  10:59pm
herb.nyc:

(Spk'ng of broadcast problems, wnyc's LLopate had a glitch and his show was off for about 7,8" today)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Irene Trudel:

Yikes herb! I'd heard from my co-workers that there was a problem with doubled up audio. This is even worse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm

Merchant/Ivory's third ingredient was Ruth Prawer Jhabavala!

  11:05pm
Jack:

@P-90 Sad it didn't work out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Irene Trudel:

Don't give up hope! We're still working on it. Oh, and happy birthday, Webhamster Henry!
  11:10pm
P-90:

Yes! Let's not forget Ruth. She was a full creative partner in that company. btw, I recommend Ivory's very first film, "Savages", shot on a shoestring budget on Long Island, co-written by a couple of the original National Lampoon guys. With the young Sam Waterston among others.
  11:16pm
herb.nyc:

(1) "savages"? I'm curious (2) oops, there WAS doubled audio. I was too broad in my error description, so sorry. (3) Irene said Jazz before. My challenged self can't really handle jazz. Like, why not just ONE z?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
melinda:

I looked at the wiki link and didn't realize they did so many films, many of them not of the genre typically associated with their name. Savages sounds interesting. A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries was also good, forgot it was theirs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Webhamster Henry:

Thanks Irene! Lovely show as always!

@herb This is the explanation I've most often heard as a (sometime) jazz musician: http://www.npr.org/2016/03/19/470879654/the-musical-that-ushered-in-the-jazz-age-gets-its-own-musical

Jimmie Spheeris two weeks running. I remember playing Isle of View to death in the mid Seventies. A gentle man, sad way to go.

Brian in UK:

The string arrangements on Spheeris' records were by David Campbell, Beck Hansen's dad. Nice work.
