Avatar 12:34pm Diane Kamikaze:

Thanks folks. I was left off the schedule. It happens to all of us at some point or another. I am not happy about it, but that doesn't mean I don't understand. I plan on showing my fat face as much as is allowed. More to come. Love you all.
Avatar 12:35pm Doctor Rembrandt:

I hope they let your show return. Is this Ken's doing? I pledged for your show. They can't do this!
Avatar 12:36pm Diane Kamikaze:

I personally find cardinals (the birds) kind of quirky and fun. Love the colors of the little ones and they are really a family. There are some bluejays in the neighborhood AND some giant woodpeckers. I'd call the bluejays thugs and the woodpeckers badasses. Enjoying the scenery either way!
  12:36pm Dean:

Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

You are a trooper, Diane. Are you going to try to do a podcast or something?

Doc, they took Belock off the schedule. He was on almost as much as if he had a show because he took every sub there was. I'll miss Diane, but I understand her not burning any bridges.
Avatar 12:36pm Cecile:

Belock was also not happy, but he lived to DJ another day.
Avatar 12:36pm Luna:

Wait. What happened?
Avatar 12:37pm Cecile:

I think that's about right, the cardinals are feisty and the blue jays bullies.
Avatar 12:37pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:38pm Cecile:

I am also not happy, either.

  12:42pm Rory:

Avatar 12:43pm Cecile:

I feel that way about Lamin and Billy Jam sometimes. I was so thrilled when Tony Coulter got a stream show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Cliff in Prague:

Cecile - Billy Jam's been on Fridays at 7 for a while now?
Avatar 12:45pm Cecile:

But I can't listen most times. It's not the same on the archives. I miss those three-hour Friday extravaganzas.
  12:46pm Dean:

One of the serious drawbacks with publicly supported radio, in my experience, is this situation. An individual can only pony up so much. I've given to Diane's show, of course, but I also have to prioritize, as do others, who will have different priorities. But we're not voting up or down when we give or don't give! We're supporting the entire station. This means management needs to make judgments based on...let's say, aesthetic...factors, independent of precise levels of support to each show.

I'm still bitter about KPFK, LA's Pacifica station, cancelling Fred Hyatt's Opera Show back in '97. It was actually a slow death. They cut it back from four hours to three to two to one...then poof! No more.

Avatar 12:47pm V Priceless:

still miss Kurt on Friday's..though he'll be back on the Stream w/the new schedule....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Cliff in Prague:

That's true, I don't like listening to archived shows either, commenting live is a lot of the fun

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Cliff in Prague:

I have only been around WFMU 4-5 years, can't imagine no Fun Machine. One of the first shows I latched onto.
  12:54pm Stevel:

I like live listening because of the possibility of communicating with host and listeners. That was not possible in the good old days.

It's nice that shows can come and go on WFMU. When my favorites slide off I hope for their return and wish the best to them. Putting these amazing shows together is a lot of work.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm coelacanth:

Dean, the donations do indeed count as votes, regardless of the lie sometimes told. ...and i vote accordingly.
i usually don't donate to shows, even though i may love them, if i think their place at wfmu is secure.
...i obviously have made some mistakes.
  12:58pm Rory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm coelacanth:

Stevel, i completely agree. change is good...only, there has been a gradual shift away from "heavy" music & "noise".
  1:01pm Polyus:

What is A440?
Avatar 1:04pm V Priceless:

@ fish - interesting remarks. People and Business Politics. Who needs 'em? Revolution Now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm coelacanth:

the fact is more donations come in to certain types of music and programming than to others - which partly explains why some shows that would be quite at home on major commercial stations have come to & remain on wfmu.
...maybe i'm the only one who wants good, cutting-edge radio above all else, and couldn't give a fuck about all the frills and hype that has become part of wfmu over the past <10 years.
i hope not.

Avatar 1:14pm Luna:

Bugger. Any other recommendations for good radio shows, similar to Diane's? Not just on fmu, but other stations I can stream. It's like losing a close friend, or my furry pet. I don't like change. I know, look at the bright side, blah-blargh-blah. But, I really do thrive best when I have a good radio show to go off of to hear bands I've never heard before. Thankfully, I have friends who help out, but still. It's not the same. Thank you Diane. I've heard lots of music on this show that I wouldn't have heard otherwise. My best to you! Now, I'll just have to play a Voivod tune, or 4 every Thursday and type VOIVOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on a word doc just for the hell of it. And, I will all of you who share words on here too.

  1:37pm Dean:

@coelacanth: Been off the board for a bit. I understand the rationale for treating giving as voting. For one thing, it's easy and objectively measurable. But I much prefer the idea of curation of an entire series of programs, some more popular than others, to the vagaries of bean-counting. Here's a counterfactual that works against my disposition: Suppose DKFM were reslotted to a time when I can't listen. I'd be bummed, but I'd be happy that it's still there for others to enjoy. The result for me is the same as the show being cancelled--setting aside the opportunity to revisit missed programs on the archives--but my experience of the result is different.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm coelacanth:

Dean i agree. i.e. i didn't listen to "beastin' the airwaves" much -a bit to poppy for me; but i think it was a good addition to the diversity of wfmu and thought it a bad thing for the health of the station overall when it was removed from the programming.

Avatar 2:03pm jljl:

Hi Luna, WMBR has a weekday program from 10-noon that plays loud stuff (laterisersclub.org). Not to toot my own horn, but I do Thurs. There are other random rock shows on MBR. WCSB in Cleveland has good stuff but their web site is so f'ed up you're not sure if what's listed is what you're listening to (and their archive didn't work for months). There's a station in Minneapolis that's okay but more indie rock. WCBN in Ann Arbor is good. As usual, the programming can be very scattered. Oh and this station in Australia has cool stuff: www.pbsfm.org.au
Avatar 2:04pm jljl:

But that's surprising if FMU determines programming by donations. You can make $10 per fundraising show and they still let you on MBR. Very surprising, and sad.
  2:05pm Listener142985:

holy cow! late risers club is still going? how are the mystery girls doing these days?
Avatar 2:05pm V Priceless:

@ DK - can't imagine you NOT doing radio in some way, shape or form. Here's to hoping in your time away from FMU the stars align to reveal a path for you to keep the Rock & Roll fires burning (if they haven't already)...perhaps even in the same time slot! Yay!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Fox (Rā-chul):

While I like a whole lot of the radio programs on WFMU, Diane's is one of the few I always listen to, if not in real time, then on the archives. It's particularly frustrating to see Diane's show not on the schedule, because her show is of the rare FMU DJs that knows her field so thoroughly that the show has a specific tone and genre range, so I have a vague notion to what I'm in for when I listen. As opposed to the "just found this wierd thing in the library isn't it cool" sort of shows.
Avatar 2:19pm jljl:

Well listener, now you have the link for real time or archive listening.

I really enjoyed Paul Bruno's fill in for Evan FD a couple weeks ago. Is there a place to find out when random FMU dj's will be making special appearances or do you just have to hear the regular DJ announce their fill-ins?
Avatar 2:20pm Cecile:

jljl a lot of them use their fundraiser mailing lists. There's also social media.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Ken From Hyde Park:

For shows to help fill the Kamikaze shaped hole in our ears and hearts, maybe "Wm Berger's My Castle of Quiet" (he plays a lot of noise) or "What Was Music?" with Marcel, who did some fill ins and just got a show on Tuesday night.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Fox (Rā-chul):

My boyfriend is saddened at the lack of Diane on the fall schedule. Not only for the music played, but the music NOT played. One of the many criteria that preferred shows have to reach in my household is that they must not play skreechy saxophone sounds. It drives my boyfriend up the wall (He spent a chunk of his childhood in a jazz club). There's a bunch of great DJs who play great stuff, but Diane's is one of the only shows we can listen to fully skreech-free. Most other days, whenever we turn on the radio, we see how long it takes before a song with sax sounds will start. It's usually around 15 minutes.

Sorry about your loss Diane....peace all
Avatar 2:32pm V Priceless:

yeah, and though I may be condemned from some corners for saying this, thanks for not playing Abba!

I don't know what I am going to do. For reasons to complicated to explain, I don't habitually listen to much Metal in and of itself, but have this crazy craving for it. The accidental discovery of Diane's show has made me hooked though, so I would rely on her show to get my Metal fix. It's gonna be hard.

but I also don't think the is the last we will be hearing of Kamikaze Fun Machine.

Diane and Professor Dum Dum are why I know anything about Metal. I owe them both a great deal of gratitude!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Rory:

Thanks for the great shows and the interviews with the musicians who provided a wealth of info I couldn't get anywhere else. Gotta go now!
Avatar 2:41pm jljl:

the band Fea opening for Agent Orange is really good if you haven't heard them.

That's cool, Cheri Pi! I love that garb. I think I was born 300 years too late (but I would probably be in rags and dirt IRL).
