I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am listener james from westwood:

How do, Mayuko and all! A few more hours of copyediting and proofreading and then it's off to Atlantic City for a much-needed break!!
Avatar 12:00pm fred:

Ready for Vertigo!
Good afternoon Mayuko, James, and everyone else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

Holy crap, I was whistling this earlier!! I picked it up as a kid from Barney Bear cartoons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm listener james from westwood:

And holy crap, those lyrics were NOT in the cartoon! :O
Avatar 12:02pm fred:

I heard it on a Dust To Digital record, I just love this label. I only order once a year from them to save on shipping costs, but it's a big one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Good things are worth saving up for. At least that's what I told myself when I first visited Powell's Bookstore in Portland and shipped mumble-mumble-dollars' worth of books home. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd like to hear the voice of Don Pardo booming out "And now, Play Vertigo with Mayuko on WFMU!"
Avatar 12:06pm fred:

@James: I only buy books at my favorite bookstore: Abbey Bookshop: Piles of books everywhere make it tough to navigate, but it's a gem
Avatar 12:09pm fred:

It is happening again: Xylouris White will tour in Europe, but no stop near Paris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm listener james from westwood:

What I did not know about our opening track was its name. Once again, WFMU educates as well as entertains!
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

Hallo, all, thank you for tuning in!!!!
@james There's gotta be something going on around "The Year Of Jubilo" in the universe, because it suddenly started last week that I got HAUNTED by it for no real reason and been whistling and singing non stop. I had to play it to let it out of my brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: It's very whistle-able!
Avatar 12:24pm fred:

Maison des cultures du monde has a treasure trove of recordings. They hope to make it available, but organizing it is an issue (funding is probably a bigger one). Talks about making that happen are ongoing, but very few people care, so funding remains elusive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm listener james from westwood:

Just learned it was a wolf character from the old Tex Avery cartoons, not Barney Bear, who whistled this tune. I at least had it right w/ M-G-M Studios!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm coelacanth:

Greetings Mayuko and Mayuko's
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

@fred oh! I hope I can help them somehow! and I hope they'll find/put out more ambrym gong recordings from Vanuatu!! Also I was wondering if there are some recordings remained in local libraries and such there in Vanuatu... feels like that's how it goes sometimes with folk music / traditional music type of thing that its recordings are only preserved among locals.
Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

Hello, coelacanth! Thank you for tuning in!!
  12:33pm P-90:

Hello Mayuko and Vertigoers. Enjoying the sounds and the discussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm listener james from westwood:

A lot of what Vanuatu has is gonna need preserving soon, given that we just crossed the no-return barrier for CO2 and global warming....horrifying stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good luck to the people of Vanuatu. With rising sea levels, they're really at risk to storms and such.
Avatar 12:37pm fred:

Mayuko, playing this music is helpful: awareness makes funding more likely. Not by much, but with the current odds, that's huge progress
Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

Welcome on board, P-90!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm listener james from westwood:

Just checked around to see if the silent fundraiser is being mentioned on the site and HOLY SHIT Nachum/JM in the AM is leaving the station? That is one big chunk of change he'll be taking with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm listener james from westwood:

Just chucked some money in the bin and said it's for Play Vertigo. Good karma ahead of a near-week in a casino town and a much safer gamble.
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

Yeah, james. we might die.
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

oh! thank you!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Ken From Hyde Park:

How's the weather in Studio B this afternoon, Mayuko? It's got to be more comfortable than the hot August afternoons. I trust it doesn't get frigidly cold there in the winter months. Well, unless budget cuts include turning off the heat.
Avatar 12:49pm fred:

Holy shit! This is a huge chunk of the budget right there. Terrifying is not an overstatement for once
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm listener james from westwood:

Maybe they can sell off the Catskills/Monsey-area frequency if it won't be needed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

Although that would nuke the non-JM Hudson Valley lis'ners, of which we do have a good #, based on phone pledges I've taken. Argh, no simple solution other than maybe meth sales.
Avatar 12:57pm fred:

@James: that would be a one-time thing that doesn't address the cost of running the station
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm listener james from westwood:

True that. Maybe something else can be done with the frequencies that provides constant money. They used to have something but technology rendered it obsolete or something.
Avatar 1:14pm Mayuko:

Yes, Ken, it's been much more comfortable here in the studio C now, except there was a mysterious person banging the door as if there was some emergency. Was kind of uneasy but I was a bit too busy cueing stuff.
Avatar 1:17pm fred:

Geger Gelgel is playing vertigo with musical styles and geography. A great selection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Bang! Bang! Bang! Hurry up and cue up that record, Mayuko! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm listener james from westwood:

Yikes, no more emergencies for this week; the Hoboken one was nightmarish enough!
Avatar 1:25pm Mayuko:

@fred Yeah, and feels like it makes perfect sense that prog rock is popular in Java. I imagine people there always liked that wandering into a maze kind of feel, assuming from Gamelan.
Avatar 1:27pm Mayuko:

Was it you who were banging the door through time and space, Doug!!!!? I see why I didn't see any human through the small window on the door when it happened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm listener james from westwood:

Doug astrally projects when he hears fine radio.
Avatar 1:37pm fred:

This Efuromio track reminds me of "Song to the siren"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Doug Schulkind:

I bang, but I bang with love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Nice to hear Richard Youngs. Have you listened to his appearance on Doug Bodah's show from a couple years ago (before Vocal Fry)? I highly recommend it.
Avatar 1:54pm Mayuko:

I was listening to the Drummer stream with no human the other day for a good amount of time, it was killing it. Love was sure behind that selection!!!
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

(IT was killing IT...? I hope it's correct usage of killing...)
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

@Ken YES!!!! That was amazing!!!!!!
Avatar 1:56pm Mayuko:

I was cuing one more track but I see that the time is over. so this is gonna be my last track for today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm melinda:

I'm a bit late here, but great photo!
Avatar 1:57pm Mayuko:

Thanks melinda! I think they're lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, indeed amazing. Have a good week of vertigo, Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

Mayuko, your use of "killing it" is 100% correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm coelacanth:

Thank you Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey everyone, don't forget to tune in to the Drummer Stream at 10pm Tuesday night to hear the next new show to join in the fun:

THE LONG WAY HOME with Kris Holmes

The show comes to us from Marathon, Texas, featuring a soul, funk, latin and R&B collecting nut from New Zealand.

Here's the show description:
"20 years of dusty fingers, frayed cuticles, & upper respiratory infections — from record digging and DJing around the globe — coalesces into a 2-hour journey through Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Blues, Latin, Rock & Roll, and all points in between. Your speakers will be head-nodding, toe-tapping & even two-stepping to this vintage 45rpm party in no time. Hear favorite songs you didn't know were your favorites, aural treats & record-world problems from the vinyl side of life."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm listener james from westwood:

And you were killing it for these past 2 hours! Helped me greatly in untangling a difficult editing situation. Thanks!
Avatar 2:02pm fred:

Thanks again Mayuko. Now that you told us what behind the name of your show, I see how appropriate it is. Each one leaves me slightly dizzy and totally exhilarated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm listener james from westwood:

an absolute pleasure to contribute! hoping the playlists will have the pledge widget soon, but I know where to find it!
Avatar 2:07pm Mayuko:

Thank you all for listening!!!!! Looking forward to the new show on the Drummer Stream! See you next week.
