@Tim, yes, someone mentioned that to me on FB when I announced the show, but that was the first I'd heard of it ... sounds potential-y
Avatar 7:24pm

Yes - potential-y!!

Dean:

You know what's kinda weird, I've been viewing lately random Stones YouTube clips, interviews, old shows, etc. Last night I dug into some recent appearances with Mick Taylor and later shows by his own band. I've never been a huge Stones fan. Got a handful of records, never saw them live. But wanted to investigate the legacy. And now this.

I saw Mick Taylor sometime around 1983 or so, with his own blues band. Closest I've been to seeing the Stones, and it was great (and LOUD).

"You can't always get what you want" should be someone's election campaign song! That is if the Rolling Stones would allow it.

hello, bodega dudes/dudettes.
Avatar 7:29pm
hyde:

@ndb there's some pretty killer stuff after 1970. but after 1980 it gets pretty sparse.
Avatar 7:30pm
ndbob:

The first Stones record I knew was "Heart of Stone" because my sister had it
Avatar 7:30pm
hyde:

i think Some Girls is *not* a classic. but it's ok.
Avatar 7:31pm
geezerette:

@Jill B: Hilarious idea! They could both use it. :)
  7:31pm
Dean:

My first was Sticky Fingers w/ zipper mid-'70s, then Goat's Head Soup, Exile much later, and even later Let It Bleed.
Avatar 7:32pm
glenn:

some girls is definitely the last good stones album, and easily in their top 5, maybe even top 3.
Avatar 7:32pm
ndbob:

#hyde Yep I mean I like parts of Exile on Main Street, Goats Head Soup etc, but the 60s Stones music is my fave
Avatar 7:32pm
ndbob:

Gary - Patti Smith was Hey Joe and Piss Factory
  7:33pm
Dean:

Some Girls appeared when I was selling records in a record store. By definition I am not fond of any record I had to sell.
Avatar 7:35pm
geezerette:

I like a lot of their records and "Some Girls" is one of my favorites. No idea why!
Avatar 7:35pm
hyde:

personally, i've always felt that the Beggar's Banquet-Let It Bleed-Sticky Fingers-Exile on Main Street lineup is the greatest 4 album run of any rock band ever
  7:36pm
Dean:

Surely The Residents' take on same?
Avatar 7:36pm
ndbob:

really hard to choose for me - anything from the rolling stones now through flowers
Avatar 7:38pm
geezerette:

Yeah! That initial riff! Then the wheels all come off.
Avatar 7:38pm
tim abdellah:

I'm a fan of Some Girls, too. Objectively, I know it's not up there with the albums Hyde listed. But it gives me a huge grin from start to finish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm

I have to admit I didn't explore thoroughly beyond the Hot Rocks collection I bought in 9th grade.
Avatar 7:39pm
ndbob:

maybe it's a reflection of being a little older - Satisfaction was seventh grade for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Gary:

I can still listen to Some Girls, which is saying a lot for me - as opposed to most of the albums of my youth, which I just don't feel anymore, even if objectively I know they're great ... maybe overplayed?

Avatar 7:43pm

@Tim: I love "Far Away Eyes". Lyrics so funny, music western as tumbleweeds.
Avatar 7:44pm
ndbob:

@Gary are you going to play Marianne Faithful's "Sister Morphine"?
  7:44pm

Well, yes, indeed, especially if you're going to spin a series of "Satisfaction." And then I'll stop calling you Shirley.
Avatar 7:45pm

They're so damn snotty. Hard attitude to maintain for 6 decades!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm

"Satisfaction" was a mandatory set-list item for any self-respecting garage band in the 1970s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Gary:

@Dean, will do - Bob, I can play it, yes, but it would be next set, and you'll be gone :(
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 7:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Suspect Träd Gräs och Stenar's version here might be influenced by Blue Cheer's.
Avatar 7:46pm
hyde:

i feel like i should say that i *do* like Some Girls! i have a great extended disco mix of "Miss You" that is killer. but it's kind of a slow decline for me after Goat's Head Soup, imo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Gary:

@Parq, there were SO many garage versions to choose from, I opted for this instead, which - yes, RevRab, totally Blue Cheer
Avatar 7:46pm
ndbob:

aww ok Gary - I figured that - it's great
Avatar 7:47pm
tim abdellah:

@gezerette - yes!
@Gary - from the Maghrebi side: Orchestre National de Barbes did a pretty cool mashup of Sympathy for the Devil with the Gnawa song Sa'di bil wali jani! And there's the Master Musicians of Jajouka's song "Brian Jones"
Avatar 7:48pm
ndbob:

the Brian Jones bio that came out a couple years ago is really good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

I tended to veer away from the more popular choices (e.g., Devo), but I would rather play things y'all wanna hear ... and WHOA, Tim! I do have a Moroccan / UK version, but not either of those ... um ... do you want to send for possible playage? Or point me to a URL?

Albini is a great producer; and kind of a prick.

I donated to the cause last week, wish I could do the same this week and for this show, in particular. You have been on a roll these past few weeks. (Looking at you, tim abdellah.)

@coel yep. and i have to say that the Big Black shows i saw in the 80's were about as good as shows got.

Flamin' Groovies do a respectable version of this tune. Totally forgot about it until just now.

Probably everyone knows the story that The Verve's big hit 'Bittersweet Symphony' sampled the symphonic version of 'The Last Time' - w/out permission - & they got sued for every penny on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm

I do not know that story, RevRab

I think even Moroccan Arabic, Tim! The singer is half-Moroccan, half-French
Avatar 9:00pm

RR: s that based on Sutcliff's girlfriend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

absolutely not true.
the verve DID get permission and got sued anyway.

supposedly they used "more than what they paid for"...which is a bit of a (not funny) joke, since it's not even that obviously derivative.
...and after all, the 'stones really needed the money...

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - Guy Peellaert is the artist who did the 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll' album cover...IS 'Time Waits for No One' on there?
@coelacanth: Seriously.
  9:08pm
Dean:

Evidently there was permission for sampling after Allen Klein negotiated full rights to the Verve song for, well, a song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
coelacanth:

actually, (not that i don't think jagger is an asshole anyway) -to be fair, Jagger/Richard may not have had anything to do with it. -in fact, scumbag alan klein may have had total control of that decision.

oh, Dean i didn't know that - though i did read that the verve doesn't get a penny in royalties for that song.
  9:11pm
Dean:

Right, coelacanth. Suits ensued among the various parties--Klein, Andrew Loog Oldham, etc.--but it isn't clear to me that the Stones ever sued.
  9:12pm
Dean:

It is, apparently, Klein's song, by now his estate's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm

I remember the Flowers album, which was an Allen Klein thingy, attributed Stevie Wonder's song to Jagger/Richards, etc. ... and being confused

It has reached the point where my mom gets a little confused if I don't call, even if I call later than usual. I have tried to engage technology to improve(?) the situation -- let her see the kids, for instance -- but it ain't gonna happen.

My mom watches Rock and Roll Circus EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I guess I’m a little late with my requests, but for next time: Ace Frehley’s version of “2000 Man”, the Blind Boys of Alabama’s “Just Wanna See His Face,” Bryan Ferry’s “Sympathy for the Devil,” Ramblin’ Jack Elliot’s “Connection” (from the Stones’ “Between the Buttons”) and finish out with the “Frampton Comes Alive” version of “Jumping Jack Flash.”
