I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am listener james from westwood:

Good Saturday, Mayuko and all!! I hear Séancé is Beyoncé's clairvoyant sister.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am listener james from westwood:

I suspect my pledge back on the first never actually made it into your hopper, but I'm just pleased to support the station. I could nudge Joe to ensure it counts to your total, if you like; I know sometimes weird things still happen w/ the system. I did mention you, the show, and GTDR in the comments, though, just so the Powers What Be know this show's got some lurve.
Avatar 12:00pm fred:

@james: Same here. Maybe that's because I split that pledge.Marcel's half seems to have been credited to his total, though. Drummer discrimination? I'd rather have it credited to the station as whole than to the wrong show then taken back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

@fred: That makes sense. My money is in good hands, is the way I see it.
Avatar 12:07pm Mayuko:

Hi fred, couldn't got back to Jason's comment yesterday - I see you'll be hospitaled away for long! I hope you'll have a healthy wfmu-free month there...
Avatar 12:07pm fred:

I like these pics, especially the planchette one (is automatic writing through apps subject to autocorrect?). These apps might come in handy for me in a couple of weeks or so
Avatar 12:10pm fred:

@Mayuko: Well, I'm to blame, for not having an iThing or laptop or even a cell phone. That will be tough but you bet that's motivation to get out of there ASAP
Avatar 12:10pm Mayuko:

and hello james! I don't know what's happening with the pledges yet - I'll ask Joe McG next week. It'd be nice to have pledges credited to the drummer stream at least!

Thank you two very much though, it does feel very much encouraged to have pledges to my show!
Avatar 12:12pm Mayuko:

I made these mock-up pics, but there are already seance apps for android and iPhones in the market, of course. haha.
Avatar 12:13pm fred:

I pledged $500 to your show, so I don't think it's included in those 7% unless your goal was really ambitious
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

There is a chance that my goal is ridiculously ambitious for some crazy reason. but wow, that's a huge contribution, again, thanks so much fred!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm listener james from westwood:

Way to go, Fred!!
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

Think I'm gonna extend my show to 3 hours today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm listener james from westwood:

Loving the Derbyshire tracks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm listener james from westwood:

And loving the possible extension!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm listener james from westwood:

Sounding nicely X-files-ish here.
Avatar 12:19pm fred:

@Mayuko: I'll be checking into the hospital on 11/7, with surgery on 11/8. No idea when I'll be released. The operation was actually scheduled earlier, but Byambajargal is in Paris on 11/6, and I have a ticket. No way I'm missing my favorite singer. So that's what decided the date
And of course Yeah! to one more hour!
Avatar 12:26pm Mayuko:

Oh nice, that's Mongolian singer you told me about before, right? Gombodoji or something like that last name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

Very much hoping all goes smoothly, fred. And good call on hitting the show before the surgery. Future you will thank past you!
Avatar 12:28pm fred:

A Tanzprocesz release. I really should listen to Jo's guest show (at least to hear Darfour played on WFMU), but I haven't remembered when I had the time
Avatar 12:32pm fred:

@Mayuko: Yes, Gombodorj Byambajargal. I've already seen her three times, but no way I'd miss her. I'll be missing a dance show on 11/7 that takes place in a theater in front of the hospital. Infuriating, but Byambajargal is a better choice for a last show
  12:35pm P-90:

Greetings DJ Mayuko and Vertigo Friends.
Cool music of course, and cool pictures too!
Avatar 12:40pm fred:

Kenny G is also a sartorial genius. Good thing he was tamer with Michelle Obama than with Bronwyn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

Oh, gods, I remember that Bronwyn bit.
Avatar 12:44pm fred:

Andy Bolus aka Evil Moisture has an interest in those kinds of recordings. He once did a lecture at Sonic Protest that mentioned that for a while
  12:44pm P-90:

Kenny G was "untame" with Bronwyn?
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, P-90!!
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

Is it just me or do you hear loud white noise in the background of my show today? Kind of bothering, but can't figure out what is causing this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mayuko and Verticians. Are you planning for spooky music next week? Is Halloween big in Japan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko: Don't hear any right now, and didn't during the quieter pieces in the 1st set, but will keep an ear open.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm listener james from westwood:

@P-90: Yes. Marathon time brings out the wilder side of some DJs, and Kenny G was no exception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm listener james from westwood:

The incident actually made it onto one of the cards in the WFMU Trading Card set, so I'm guessing B was ultimately cool with it.
Avatar 12:54pm Mayuko:

Hello Ken, thank you for tuning in! Spooky music today, next week is singles going steady week. Think I'll be playing all - or maybe mostly - 80's Japanese new wave / noise / punk singles and flexis....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

I like the sound of that possible playlist!
Avatar 1:01pm Mayuko:

Halloween seems to have become a bit bigger in Japan than before recently, but not much. I guess our need of mingling with the dead is covered by O-Bon, the summer festival where dead people come back and dance with us.
Avatar 1:03pm Jason Elbogen:

Hello, all! (Mayuko the audio sounds clean to me--no whitenoise in the background)
Avatar 1:05pm Mayuko:

Hi Jason!! Thanks for tuning in & letting me know. and james too, re: the white noise thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Jeff Golick:

Howdy, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Jeff Golick:

Or rather: boo!
  1:06pm Jesse k:

Hey mayuko, just tuned in on my phone, sounds good to me!
Avatar 1:08pm fred:

@Mayuko: will you bring your extensive collection of 7" records? (I really like that Submissions track)
Avatar 1:08pm Mayuko:

oh, drummer comrades. hello and thank you for tuning in!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm coelacanth:

greetings Mayuko & vertigoats
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

@fred I lost all the physical object I had possessed when I left my motherland, so I'm broadcasting all out of my thought.
Avatar 1:12pm Mayuko:

Thank you for joining our seance, coelacanth!
Avatar 1:19pm fred:

Appropriate soundtrack: my only remaining friend from college days just called to make sure someone would warn her if I die during surgery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm coelacanth:

fred, don't die in surgery.
Avatar 1:22pm fred:

SCG party 10/28: www.sleepinggiantglossolalia.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm coelacanth:

in fact, don't die until several decades from now...unless the world starts sucking so bad that you'd like to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm listener james from westwood:

No lie, the possible fate of WFMU post–JM in the AM is a bit of anxiety I've been only semi-successfully managing alongside the general election-season tachycardia. Can only imagine I'm not alone, esp. within the hallowed halls of 43 Monty.
Avatar 1:29pm fred:

@coelacanth: Speaking of the world starting sucking bad, my heart surgery is conveniently happening on election day. I thing I should ask about the result as soon as I can, when I can't take the bad news
  1:31pm Jesse k:

They're good people!
Avatar 1:32pm fred:

@james: WFMU is in my will, but I'm so rich that it would maybe keep the station operating for a day at best
Avatar 1:37pm Mayuko:

Spirits interrupted my radio programming. Can be used to excuse any miscues in future.
Avatar 1:39pm fred:

Don't go there: if you blame spirits for miscues, some will credit them for the genius segues
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

haha, ok Gang Clan Mafia are good people despite of their name, and don't forget to tune in Kaminsky Kamoutsky with Jesse tomorrow, all! Tanstaafl! with Gang Clan Mafia, live from Mobius Art Space in Cambridge, MA wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Jeff Golick:

Very cool, @fred (re will, not operation), and also @Jesse K!
Avatar 1:42pm Mayuko:

@fred haha, that's true! and eventually it leads to spirits taking over the entire station!

Please pledge to our silent fundraiser and help us stay alive and ran by humans, everyone!
Avatar 1:43pm fred:

What's that trend with mafia names? TG (Gondard) has a side project called Pizza Noise Mafia
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

and thanks for the SGG party link, fred!
Avatar 1:45pm fred:

I don't think I had heard that YMO track before
  1:46pm Jesse k:

Haha, they're not THAT good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm coelacanth:

fred - assuming you mean the election here, we already know. it's probably hillary, so be prepared! be prepared for dump too... i personally don't think he's capable of doing more damage to the world than what bush, bush and reagan did. most of his batshit craziness will be laughed out before it passes. (except supreme court judges, but then, his choices cannot be worse than those of the bush empire.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm listener james from westwood:

@fred: You're not alone—WFMU is my backup beneficiary on my retirement fund should I pass and my dad isn't on the scene to inherit the $!
Avatar 1:49pm fred:

@Mayuko: Maybe it could work if you can convince enough people that you are a spirit that can bring blessings in exchange for oreos and ice cream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

coelacanth: Frump always finds ways to make it worse. He'd appoint people to the Sup. Ct. that make Scalia look like Dick Dastardly.
Avatar 1:51pm fred:

@coelacanth: more afraid of the pattern: Brexit then Trump probably means Marine Le Pen is next. Clinton wouldn't rule out that outcome, but Trump could seal it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm coelacanth:

i don't know james. i mean, you're right, in general, but he's a libertarian at heart, so i think his choices wouldn't be as bad as the brainwashed religious fanatics that we've had to suffer through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm coelacanth:

@fred -yes, there's that.
Avatar 1:55pm fred:

@james: Most of my worth is to be shared between my brother, my sister, WFMU, and the Willie Mae rock camp for girls. The rest should hopefully be enough to take care of the fees
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Jeff Golick:

Great set.
Avatar 2:00pm fred:

Aethenor! Interesting project. I like Steve Noble. I like SOMA too, except when he's so drunk he can barely stumble on stage. I saw him at a Lucinda Childs dance show a few weeks ago, not as weird as when I saw him walk past my office a couple of years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

@coel: What frightens me is his delegating the choices and vetting to people like Pence and then blandly OKing whoever got picked. And THAT's dangerous.
Avatar 2:06pm fred:

Fun fact: I've been in the same place than Stephen O'Malley many times. He only acknowledged my existence (not walking into me, a nod at best) when I'm wearing a WFMU T-shirt. These magic talismans can be had for a mere $50!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm listener james from westwood:

This is some damn fine spooky music.
Avatar 2:09pm Mayuko:

Morricone Youth, our own Devon E. Levins the host of Morricone Island!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm listener james from westwood:

Devon would indeed know from good soundtrack-y horror music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm coelacanth:

james@2:05 okay now i'm scared.
Avatar 2:14pm fred:

@Mayuko: Did you apply to that call about subway stations? I think it involved tiles, but I'm not sure
Avatar 2:16pm Mayuko:

@fred No, I've been just experimenting stuff for myself, rather than taking time for submissions recently. Took too much time reading about seance technology this past week.
Avatar 2:18pm fred:

Elg! No wonder a Brussels-based guy has a record on a Cairo-based label: they used to hang out in the same scene when they both were living in Paris some years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm coelacanth:

i like how that ouija board is parked next to sandwich and beverage.
Avatar 2:22pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm coelacanth:

damn. i was hoping you hadn't noticed the time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm listener james from westwood:

coel is correct! Also: The slang or shorthand term for a telegraph or telegram was "a wire" or "to wire someone," so you're not too far off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm coelacanth:

video loop: www.youtube.com...
  2:30pm Jesse k:

Super enjoying the extended show today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm coelacanth:

how to: blog.art21.org...
Avatar 2:33pm fred:

I guess it's a good thing that Kakushin Nishihara's show is sold out since I won't be able to attend anyway. But a friend is involved in her tour so I might have been able to score a ticket
Avatar 2:37pm fred:

Do you know where that funeral music was recorded?
Avatar 2:37pm Mayuko:

One of the interesting articles I read : "Ghosts in the Machines: The Devices and Daring Mediums That Spoke for the Dead" www.collectorsweekly.com...
Avatar 2:39pm Mayuko:

@fred it's a Chinese Taoist's funeral in Taman Melawis, Klang from 2001.
Avatar 2:39pm quinn:

This is amazing! I don't usually tune it at this time, glad to know your show exists
Avatar 2:40pm Mayuko:

Hi quinn! Thank you for tuning in. I'm usually noon to 2pm, but doing an extended hour today!
Avatar 2:42pm fred:

That's in Malaysia, is that right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm coelacanth:

that's an interesting article Mayuko.
...i was busy accompanying your music with this: www.youtube.com...

- you got me curious.
Avatar 2:43pm Mayuko:

@fred yes I think so. the label is in Malaysia so it makes sense. This is actually pretty interesting so it's hard to stop and move on to the next music! but it's pretty long.
Avatar 2:44pm Mayuko:

@ coelacanth I wanna see those videos! I'll check them out after my show!!!
Avatar 2:47pm fred:

I was wondering because based on Kink Gong recordings I placed it much more Southern than China. Malaysia makes total sense. I think he (Laurent Jeanneau) has a bunch of similar recordings, it sounds like what he wants to document
Avatar 2:49pm fred:

Nice Chiyako Sato track
  2:50pm P-90:

That 佐藤千夜子 track was beautiful
Avatar 2:52pm Mayuko:

That Chiyako song starts like "I'm following the shadow of a phantom..." pretty dark song actually.
  2:52pm Mark R:

I'm glad you're running long today, Mayuko--I just tuned in. Roy Montgomery sounds beautiful. Sort of Old West-y
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Jeff Golick:

New Roy Montgomery!
Avatar 2:53pm fred:

This reminds me: that Ouija app isn't anywhere near Unicode compliant. What would a thing like that look like in Japan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm listener james from westwood:

Joy Division!
Avatar 2:56pm Mayuko:

@fred We have a thing called Kokkuri-san, instead of Ouija, so we need to develop our own domestic seance app.
Avatar 2:57pm fred:

OK: Taoist funeral from Malaysia, Japanese dark song from the thirties, new Roy Montgomery, Joy Division. This set is WFMU. Anyone who hasn't pledged should do so before this song ends
Avatar 2:57pm Mayuko:

Hello Mark R, I'm about to finish my show now - thank you for joining our seance though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm coelacanth:

Mayuko @ 2:44 that last one is really cool. there are others but i've stopped for now!
  3:00pm Jesse k:

Thanks mayuko!
Avatar 3:01pm Mayuko:

Thanks all for listening! Don't forget to summon all your dead ancestors, spirits from beyond, and some cash and donate em to WFMU!
  3:01pm Mark R:

Fred's right about the pledging, dammit. We've only got about a week to go and we're less than a quarter of the way to our goal. If you enjoy Mayuko (and everybody else's) show as much as I do, we have to pitch in to keep WFMU alive! Check out all the neat swag you can get. My entire wardrobe now consists of FMU t-shirts. My entire CD library is FMU DJ comps. I have an FMU turntable cover, an FMU hat, and just in time for a cool day like today, a killer FMU hoodie. Your pet could become the station's mascot for a year. Lots of bene's. Come on now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm listener james from westwood:

For a second I thought this Vernon track was a Disintegration Loop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm coelacanth:

Extraordinary! Thanks Mayuko.

tchau camaradas
Avatar 3:02pm fred:

I wonder what they have in Korea. They're so good at mixing phonemes and graphics.
Thanks for the extended show Mayuko! I'll miss you so much, but that's for later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Mayuko, and keep pledging, all, if you can!
  3:07pm P-90:

Thanks so much, Mayuko!
Avatar 3:07pm Mayuko:

Thanks again all for listening! See you next week!!
  5:46pm zmzz:

missed your show but will play back later. found only four listeners commenting on this board so I just chimed in.
  6:52pm zmzz:

Hey Mayu, spooky music for Halloween? u forgot Screamin' Jay Hawkins!
Avatar 1:38am Mayuko:

@zmzz thanks for listening! There are so many things I should've played and didn't!! Oh well.....
