Don't feel bad, Clay. There are many great artists still alive. Scotty just played some Nick Gilder. I had the pleasure of opening for him on his 1988 tour. Of course, things were different for him by that time. He'd put on a good 50-60 stone and had tried to go jazz. Sadly, just purchasing a clarinet and a porkpie hat doesn't automatically make one a jazz cat. I was playing with Tim Weisberg at the time, the flute maniac! Nick tried to jam with us a few times, but his licorice stick would not cooperate. Bad spit valve or something. His tone was too brittle. His facility on the instrument was not strong. Tim had to ask him to go fetch beers and we finished up real fast while he was gone. You know what, though? Nick shed that weight and his clarinet and I caught up with him years later on a package tour we did together. I was playing Euphonium for a re-constituted New Vaudeville Band. Nick stole the stage on many of those dates. He even gave me a rare 1912 V Nickel I still keep in my coin purse. GREAT SHOW SCOTTY!
