Bo Diddley's first single, “Bo Diddley,” debuted in March, 1955. Tommy Smalls, aka Dr. Jive, booked him for Smalls' radio show-on the road setting house records at Harlem's Apollo Theater. Ed Sullivan took in a show and signed Tommy Smalls to assemble a 15-minute R&B segment for “The Ed Sullivan Show” (which began 1955 as “Toast of the Town”). So on Nov. 20, 1955, LaVern Baker, the Five Keys and Bo Diddley appeared. Apparently before rehearsal Sullivan heard Bo Diddley performing Tennessee Ernie Ford’s “Sixteen Tons” backstage, and asked him to perform that song on the show. Diddley agreed, but when he looked at the set list he saw “Bo Diddley. Sixteen Tons,” which Bo Diddley took as meaning he was to play two songs. In what is widely regarded as the first rock and roll performance on national TV, Bo Diddley picked, plucked and strummed his way into music history (see it on YT). However, feeling double-crossed, Sullivan banned Bo Diddley from appearing again . . . . Hmmmmm. 1minute 20seconds into Jack Rivera's "You Got to Lose Me," sounded like: ". . . You walk and you jaw and that fucking cheap perfume that you wear" ?

Greetings to Gniezno, Poland LaVern Baker did "Tweedlee Dee" (not on YT), and Willis "Gator Tail" Jackson closed the Dr. Jive revue on sax (this is on YT - Whatever he played was no song). The 3-minute Bo Diddley video posted by William Stewart is much more interesting knowing the background. First there's Ed Sullivan fumbling away his noble intro, then the very impressive Tommy Smalls, then Bo Diddley's better judgement to play what HE wants - the more likely story. But after 2 of the song's otherwise 3 verses you wonder if he shuts down from seeing a cut sign when looking to his left.
