This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hey Explorers
Avatar 7:00pm ndbob:

evening Evan and everyone!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

evening bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm listener james from westwood:

How do, everyone!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

How-dee, James!
Avatar 7:02pm ndbob:

Heya James!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

man I just barely got this show put together yesterday. it was a hard day to numbly wander through. then today my hard drive crashed. but the show must go on, i say
Avatar 7:05pm hyde:

the revolution is a little dirge-y!
Avatar 7:06pm ndbob:

glad you are here Evan!
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Hyde! yeah this is the sneaky preamble. and a moment of silence, so to speak, for fallen comrade JJ Perrey
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

@Flash Strap fighting on through the struggle is what's important
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Right on brother Hyde. That is the point of the show tonight, basically.
Avatar 7:08pm just julia:

so glad the show will go on, hello, good evening, happy to have this in my ears.
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

Sister Julia! yes
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

yeah, yeah. damn right i'll play this song right now. when else would you play this song
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

such a weird one, though, seriously
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Roy Harper on this song: "a testament to my lifelong devotion to espousing equal rights for all humans. I have long since wondered about the wisdom of stating that you have more than the capacity to hate your own race for its misdemeanors, but as a polemic it has been both an effective tool and somewhere of a place to stand."
Avatar 7:17pm ndbob:

hating your own race is as bad as hating any race - this song is vile
Avatar 7:18pm junglepete:

Evening Flash!....this song's a very apt choice...ndbob, I think this is more a statement about the capacity to hate the things that the
hegemon does. Not whites, per se.
  7:20pm Ed:

Evening Flash and all!
Avatar 7:20pm ndbob:

still though Evan - it's a song of hate and intolerance
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

I think it's not meant to be taken strictly literally, bob, and I think we can all relate to a certain extent to the sentiment. Moreover, whiteness is a construct to which all "white" people may not feel they want to belong. The "White Man" should be interpreted as a kind of literary-historical construct, here. basically hegemony, imperialism, etc.

also, it would be fair game to hate white people if you ask me, but your mileage may vary according to ideology and interpretation of history
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

I respectfully disagree bob.
  7:23pm JtotheK:

Hi everyone.
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

Hi Ed, Hi Jungle Pete, Hi JtotheK
Avatar 7:24pm ndbob:

I understand that that Evan - but to me it's no better than the hate expressed by some Trump supporters - I respect that you respectfully disagree though
Avatar 7:25pm ndbob:

I am so fucking sick of hate ya know?
Avatar 7:25pm glenn:

i support intolerance of intolerance.
Avatar 7:26pm ndbob:

Heya Glenn and J to the k
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

I personally don't think all hate is created equal, and I find it a fairly useful tool in the spectrum of human emotion. I hate racism. I hate it. I hate misogyny. I hate imperialism.
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Hi Glenn!
Avatar 7:29pm ndbob:

I hate racism. misogyny and imperialism too - and that applies to all races
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

I hear ya bob
Avatar 7:36pm geezerette:

Hi Evan and seekers!
Love the Covarrubias image, hate the need for it. So fucking sad.
Emotionally exhausting. Gotta pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and start all over again. (Irving Berlin?)
Avatar 7:36pm hyde:

all this respectful disagreeing is weird and foreign to me!
Avatar 7:37pm geezerette:

haha hyde! :)
Avatar 7:37pm ndbob:

How Hyde - and welcome - heya geezerette!
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Scraps deSelby:

god i love robert wyatt's voice
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

me too Scraps! About a dozen songs of his I wanted to play tonight
Avatar 7:39pm geezerette:

Howdy Bob!
Yo, Evan!
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

@ndb heh, i'm just kidding. since it seems like these days there are so few arguments that have respectful disagreements! ;)
Avatar 7:42pm ndbob:

@hyde and I respect that:)
Avatar 7:44pm ndbob:

being from the center-left I feel like a conservative on WFMU - grading on a curve
Avatar 7:46pm geezerette:

Bob, ha! :)
Avatar 7:48pm geezerette:

Evan, thanks for saying these things. Comforting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Scraps:

feeling like a conservative here: someone here said they felt "sad" for me because i supported Clinton (ie, not Bernie): as though I didn't think about my position (left, liberal, married to a black woman [now dead, alas]) before I took it.... I stopped talking about politics here.

we are all sad, now. sigh....
Avatar 7:54pm glenn:

if it's any consolation, ndbob, most american leftists would be considered right wing by canadian standards. i laugh when i hear republicans referring to the democrats as commies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm Scraps:

yes, or obama as a leftist (or socialist)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Scraps:

i mean, i like obama, but he's a centrist.
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

There is very little in the way of an American Left, in any real sense, it's true
Avatar 7:56pm ndbob:

Yep Glenn most of the Canadians I know are NDP supporters - I might be too actually
Avatar 7:57pm glenn:

anyway, carmichael's moving into my guest room. the basement and office are still available. sign up now.
Avatar 7:57pm ndbob:

@Scraps I supported Hillary over Bernie too
Avatar 7:58pm hyde:

@glenn an fmu refugee bunker? tempting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I dunno. Shit. Maybe this week...I actually wanna go w/ the Gospel show on the mainstream...Oh - Nina.
Avatar 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent first hour as always Evan! catch the rest later - can hang around chat for a while tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm melinda:

howdy! Just in time for Nina Simone.
Avatar 8:00pm glenn:

i'm an n.d.p. member. [lesson here, gary johnson voters] i voted for the liberal in my riding because i simply couldn't stomach having harper reelected.
Avatar 8:00pm geezerette:

hi Melinda!
Avatar 8:01pm ndbob:

Heya Melinda!
Avatar 8:01pm coelacanth:

ahh this is sublime.
...hi Evan and explorers
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Whatever our left---liberal spectrum here, I hope we can find solidarity in anti-racist, feminist, and a generally intersectional pursuit of emancipatory politics. because our precarious brothers and sisters will need us now that they're under fire
Avatar 8:03pm ndbob:

right Evan - even tho I supported Hillary I would certainly have strongly supported Bernie if he had gotten the nomination
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Melinda! Rev Rab! Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Scraps:

ooh, i like linda sharrock
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

I would have liked to see a candidate more committed to anti-imperialist policies than either Hillary or Bernie, but I do my part when it's time to vote
Avatar 8:05pm glenn:

bernie would have won the election. i hope elizabeth warren can find enough backers to make a run in 2020.
Avatar 8:05pm hyde:

@Flash agreed. i actually have not voted for a republican or democrat for pres since 1992 (frankly, i have never done much beyond leaving my vote blank or writing in a friend or relative) but i'm with you on that angle
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

me too Scraps! it really should be "Sonny & Linda Sharrock" on the cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Scraps:

i'm sorry, but i don't think so. bernie would be tarred with "socialist".
Avatar 8:06pm hyde:

@glenn sadly i think the chances the democrats run another woman in 2020 is pretty much nonexistent
Avatar 8:07pm ndbob:

Bernie may well have won - tho I certainly couldn't see it before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@ the time - Ford pardoning Nixon
- now - Police never - not once convicted.
We Beg Your Pardon America.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I didn't see it clearly enuff until after the fact:
Hillary is Republican - Trump is Third Party.
Bernie was our Third Party - & it is Time.
Avatar 8:09pm glenn:

see, he may have been tarred with socialist, but is that any worse than what clinton was tarred with?
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

the specifics may have shifted but this track is still so razor sharp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Scraps:

warren would be 71 in 2020, unfortunately
Avatar 8:10pm ndbob:

nah - Hillary is a centrist democrat - just like me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm melinda:

I think Bernie could have won, but it's hard to say, since he's so different than previous Democratic candidates. I think a lot of younger people aren't turned off by the socialist label and were really excited about him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Listen - Listen! When 1/10th of 1% owns more than all the rest of us
- it is Time for even Murika to say the word. Socialist !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm melinda:

A good time for Gil Scott-Heron.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- because the young must live in the Now & the Future.
Avatar 8:11pm ndbob:

I wasn't excited about Bernie but 1000 times better than Trump
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

i do think a lot of the anti-Hillary misogynists could have got down with Bernie - socialist or not, they don't care - but i don't like the idea, and i don't know if it would have been enough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hey - I Voted proudly for a Woman. But not that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Scraps:

glenn, but clinton didn't win.

believe me, i would have supported Bernie. i just don't believe that he would have won
Avatar 8:13pm ndbob:

My grandfather was an active socialist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

But - Hillary *did* win. The Vote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Scraps: Did you believe Drumpf would have won?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Scraps:

yes, yes, so did Gore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes he did.
Avatar 8:14pm coelacanth:

Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

love him so much, C
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Scraps:

love this song

the LKJ one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bernie had Enthusiasm. That's what Election Day is about, folks.
- & - Bernie registered voters. He brought the disenfranchised into the game.
- but - the DNC shut him down. Did you miss the Debbie Schultz thing?
Bad Choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bernie & Drumpf are mirror images. Bernie was the high-information version, & successfully communicated Facts to the Proletariat. He did his best to change it from the Inside (as a Senator). Even tho' he actually is an Independent - not a Democrat.
Avatar 8:20pm glenn:

the electoral college just seems nuts to me. it's simply not possible for a canadian prime minister to be elected and not win the popular vote. that doesn't necessarily mean a majority of votes, but a plurality is always required.
Avatar 8:20pm just julia:

this is one cathartic set, mr. dj... so heartening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm melinda:

Rep. Keith Ellison from Minnesota wants to be the new DNC chair, and if he got the position it would be a huge improvement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Some consider Killary the most warlike major candidate ever. They had to have her - even tho' it didn't work in 2008 either.
Avatar 8:23pm hyde:

@glenn the electoral college is nuts. but it's the playing field, and has been for ever. unless it changes, which is doubtful, every potential candidate knows that that is the landscape they have to figure out how to win on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Scraps:

Killary? Jesus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Republicans keep winning Elections w/out winning Popular Votes. It's going to end, & everybody knows it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Scrtaps: Too late to pray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Scraps:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Scraps:

Wait, wait, wait.... never mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Duhbya was already too much. This could be the worst thing that ever happened to the United States - w/ the possible exception of the Civil War. We'll tear it down.
My heart aches for all the Women who were sure the glass ceiling was shattered - & instead this Groper in Chief empowering all the racists & rapists. I say we bumrush this Inauguration & make the National Guard earn their wage. See if they stand down...It's that bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Scraps:

Not going to fight with the left. That's what they want, intersectional fighting.. Rev Rab, go with god, whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If I had the switch - I'd make it Hillary not Drumpf in a nanosecond. Believe me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...after all - that *was* the Vote.
Avatar 8:35pm hyde:

ok, this is all getting a little much for me. i'll see you guys next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just ranting Hyde. Just us chickens here.

Uh oh...Leonard Cohen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes. He's gone.
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Fucking hell
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

what a year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm melinda:

Leonard Cohen died?
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

oh dammit
Avatar 8:46pm coelacanth:

oh, no
Avatar 8:47pm geezerette:

God what a crazy time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm melinda:

I bought his biography a few months ago and it is still sitting on my shelf, I was waiting for the right time to read it.

Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

he means as much to me as i'm sure he means to you all
  8:51pm listener james from westwood:

Fucking goddamn hell, this year.
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

my hard drive being dead, i don't have all the leonard cohen i wish i did at this moment. but I have a few on LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm melinda:

Before the news about Mr. Cohen I was about to comment on how the Perrey was great escapist music, but alas, there is no escape.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

this is, for the record, my very favorite song of his
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

except maybe Last Year's Man
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

that was my hope, Melinda.

but there is no escape, and 2016 carries no survivors
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

that was my hope, Melinda.

but there is no escape, and 2016 carries no survivors
Avatar 8:54pm junglepete:

Avalanche is a favorite of mine. So dark, though.
Avatar 8:55pm coelacanth:

i Love this whole album; and his first, but maybe "the dealer" is my favorite LC song... dark as it is.
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

it's a work of genius, junglepete
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

oh god i'm cryin, i won't deceive you
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

did i just cut out?

and more importantly, am i back?
Avatar 8:59pm coelacanth:

yes me too.

fucking hell.
Avatar 8:59pm just julia:

yes and yes. thank heavens.
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

sorry guys, i hope the internet holds together for the rest of the show
Avatar 9:00pm geezerette:

I'm not hearing Cohen, is that what you're playing?
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

yes, but i think i should be back now. try refreshing the player?
Avatar 9:01pm coelacanth:

g, yes.
Avatar 9:02pm coelacanth:

@8:55 i said "dealer" - no it's called "the stranger song".
Avatar 9:04pm geezerette:

Yep! Fine now. Thanks Evan and coel!
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

i knew what you meant, my friend!

maybe Story of Isaac is my favorite... or maybe it's Stranger Song, where it all began. Watching McCabe & Mrs. Miller and thinking who IS this?
Avatar 9:06pm geezerette:

That's one of my favorite films, for many reasons.
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

mine as well. it destroys me, every time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm melinda:

It's one of a few films I'm aware of that uses one singer-songwriter to such great effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm melinda:

Harold & Maude, The Graduate being the other two (counting S&G as one).
Avatar 9:11pm geezerette:

melinda, yes!
Avatar 9:11pm junglepete:

Cohen's lyrical metaphors are so exquisitely wrought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm JtotheK:

thanks Flash Strap, I've gotta head out, but will tune in via archives for the rest and then be back on for Little Danny later (hopefully) -- cheers, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

2nd only to Dylan - or less prolific, but more consistent. In other words - the Greatest.
Avatar 9:13pm northguineahills:

true, RevRab, true...
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

what did Dylan say to Cohen about that? "They say I'm #1 and you're #2, but as far as I'm concerned, you're number one. I'm number zero."
Avatar 9:16pm coelacanth:

later on JK
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

yeah, see ya JK! have a good night
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

that is the greatest final line of any song, i think. "the peacock spreads his fan."
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth:

his first 3 albums are 100% perfect...and i don't think he ever was terrible - in ...almost 50 years?
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

maybe the only time he was sort of terrible - "Jazz Police" - is still totally crazy genius
Avatar 9:22pm coelacanth:

haha! i did make a big statement as there are many albums i haven't heard of his!
Avatar 9:25pm coelacanth:

i've never been into his elaborate string and bg vocal arrangements that dominated his work through much of his career; but i always seemed to find a good song buried within it all when i tried.
Avatar 9:26pm Little Danny:

Hello Brother Flash and all!
Avatar 9:27pm coelacanth:

greetings Little D
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Hello Little Danny! how are you, friend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes - it's interesting because I love the arrangements on his early stuff - the sparse but perfect quality. I heard he recorded in the dark - w/ mirrors? Very specific stuff.
Avatar 9:29pm Little Danny:

I am trying to walk as tall as possible. It hasn't been easy but I'm trying not to let myself give in to fear and my naturally anxious state. Thanks for asking!
Avatar 9:30pm just julia:

i kind of love "jazz police," though "sort of terrible" is a description i'll second
Avatar 9:31pm coelacanth:

i had a subtle feeling this wasn't Leonard Cohen!
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

It might be so good that i should just eat my words about it. I mean "Jazz Police are going through my folders / Jazz Police are talking to my ... niece"

"Throw another turtle on the fire / Guys like me are mad 'bout turtle meat"
Avatar 9:33pm just julia:

niece! meat! it's just about perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Judy Collins had to literally shove him onstage to start his career.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Scraps:

aaaaaaahhhhhh.... that's nice
Avatar 9:40pm coelacanth:

i love Shepp. no complaints here.
- and you did express that you had limitations on your Leonard Cohen at the moment.
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

sadly so

Yeah, good call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Ike:

Friends, I'm here to dispense musical palliatives for worried souls tonight on the Cool Blue Flame. Soul, jazz and disco from a place of love, struggle, strength, light and peace. Hope you'll join me here: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:57pm geezerette:

I want to say something encouraging, and it's this; the
world needs our attention. There are infinite problems to be solved and it looks very dark but I believe the best way to get through whatever happens is to choose an issue you're passionately concerned about and do something to change it.
To me the fundamental issue is climate change and its consequences. There are various organizations, there are gardens, education and advocacy, classes to teach, macro and micro scaled approaches to take. Being engaged feels good, turns despair into hope. If anyone agrees, choose something.
Apologies friends. Heartfelt and well meant.
Beautiful,helpful show Evan. Thank you.
