A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

JakeGould:

@MD: Election servers were not hacked. The report is about the timing of WikiLeaks information. If actual polling machines were hacked outright don't you think there would be bigger news?

The "hack" was simply that WikiLeaks got information and that was leaked at just the right time to discredit Clinton.

A bigger "hack" is the FBI chief gossiping about nothing in the days before the election.

These are not "hacks" but rather politics as usual but with new fancy tools.

I will certainly look into Muriel Barbery, and any other book recommended by yourself!

Listener Robert:

Remember the 1st time they used (not just tested) the EAS, at least in NY metro? It was the early 1990s to alert of a tropical depression or nor'easter -- a garden variety cyclone that mostly meant a lot of rain, we'd had MUCH more severe weather many times in the past. But they'd never used the EAS (or its predecessor EBS) for it before. The difference seemed to be that until the Berlin Wall & USSR were gone, they were afraid that the EAS would spook people into thinking it was a nuclear war, which is after all the primary reason it was instituted.

In the years since, it's gotten very little use. I think maybe a reason they used it that time was to make sure people would NOT panic from residual cold war fears.
