Good point, Hugh. The topic's too big. Bring on the schmaltz and the bombast. Simon's America works so well because of all the homely details in the lyric, and the relationship it's grounded in.
L.A. Woman works for me because Morrison looks outward more than he looks inward.

Right there with you. LA was the perfect subject for the Doors, and that is for sure one of the band's best moments. Elvis Costello's "America Without Tears" is subtle and great.
