This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:01pm ndbob:

Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Dammit Hyde, present or no it's good to have you warming this house!
Avatar 7:11pm hyde:

heh. i also was just listening to lonnie liston smith before coming over and realized after a couple minutes that i had forgotten to click on the stream and was still listening to lonnie liston smith. i mean, it sounded like the explorer's room.
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Lonnie is a friend of the Explorers Room, that's for sure
Avatar 7:13pm geezerette:

Cannot feel sad with music like this.
Avatar 7:13pm geezerette:

hey hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Carmichael:

This Melle is awesome, Flash!
Avatar 7:15pm hyde:

hiya geezerette! also ndb and carmichael...
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hi Carmichael! I agree! This whole record is very very good. Always liked the cut, "Weird Valley"
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

also a very nice "Moonlight in Vermont" – another version of which we may hear tonight, actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Carmichael:

As I was explaining to Irwin, my jazz gene pool is very shallow. I've never heard of Melle, as well as lots of others. But I like it when I hear it!
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

Melle also did a lot of soundtrack (Andromeda Strain) and early electronic work. A painter too. Interesting guy
  7:22pm JtotheK:

Hi Explorers, Hi Flash -- happy house warming! Digging the jazz tunes. This time of year puts me in a jazz mood.
Avatar 7:23pm geezerette:

Love this version! "Night in Tunisia" one of my all time favorites. :)
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

Hi JK! Me too

G: Love "Night in Tunisia" just to death. At least one more version coming tonight
Avatar 7:24pm geezerette:

Avatar 7:26pm geezerette:

hey Ken FHP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I guess today, we say goodbye to intrepid space explorer John Glenn at age 95. A life well lived.
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

A life well lived indeed
Avatar 7:38pm hyde:

off topic: did any of you see the GQ fashion thing a couple days ago with fashion shots of the living legends of jazz? they chose pretty well, and let's just say roy haynes and cecil taylor are the coolest www.gq.com...
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

wow cecil taylor is entirely fly in all that chocolate velvet
Avatar 7:44pm geezerette:

thanks hyde, what beautiful old men.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

damn and you are CORRECT about Roy Haynes

Pharoah's jacket needs some props though that thing is glorious
Avatar 7:46pm hyde:

i really thought it was great, in this year where we're doing so much going over of people's careers as they peel off, that gq chose to celebrate the giants who are still here. i men, that is a serious bunch. (i might have swapped out chick corea for roscoe mitchell, but that's quibbling)
Avatar 7:48pm geezerette:

It's certainly something to celebrate!
Avatar 7:49pm geezerette:

Jazz Messangers :D
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

Wayne Shorter really excellent on sax here, Lee Morgan on trumpet (Morgan also wrote)
Avatar 7:52pm geezerette:

!!!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

Ah, but Blakey's drums are always the star! oh my god!
Avatar 7:53pm hyde:

heh, i was just going to bring up the wayne shorter thing. i was waiting for him to take a break ;)
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

can't remember who's on piano, but I love how it functions in the ensemble as this dark anchor
Avatar 7:54pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

Welcome to your new house, Flash! Bahama is near Durham, right? It sounds appropriately exotic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

hi hyde!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

thanks Melinda! yeah it's just north of Durham, in the hinterlands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...then it reminds me of 'Lonely Woman' a touch - but it's just more African. What a jam...
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

that whole LP is a wild ride, revrab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I believe listener annie resides in the Asheville area. She's on the comments boards in the mornings. She'd probably enjoy this show.
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

She does live up there! definitely a morning person
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 8:31pm hyde:

Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

One of my favorite Lyman tracks, here
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

One of the very least Egyptian sounding things the Cairo Jazz Band ever did
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

very australian sounding
Avatar 8:45pm geezerette:

Hearing this though, you can really hear how middle eastern Klezmer actually is.
Avatar 8:46pm geezerette:

it's in there...
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

oh absolutely it is. like how dutch/polka-esque mariachi music is
Avatar 8:48pm geezerette:

Yes!
Avatar 8:48pm northguineahills:

been digging the whole set.
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! glad to hear it
Avatar 8:50pm Little Danny:

Man you are playing some of my all time fave jazz/Latin exotica this evening, Flash
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

Music to my ears, LD
Avatar 8:58pm northguineahills:

Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

Randy Weston is so cool
Avatar 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 9:16pm geezerette:

piano bar dreamy
  9:16pm jeff:

lol at the diva las vegas thing
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

Larry Young, fresh out of Lifetime, with James Blood Ulmer. This whole LP is a raging inferno
Avatar 9:19pm geezerette:

sounds like liquid lunch with Truman Capote and his swans.
Avatar 9:20pm Little Danny:

I stupidly sold my copy of Lawrence of Newark years ago, and now I know I need it back
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

oh my goodness now THERE's a visual I bet Larry didn't have in mind
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

that's some regret to have to carry with you, LD!
Avatar 9:21pm geezerette:

likely not! :D
Avatar 9:22pm Little Danny:

OMG you are slaying it tonight Evan. "Incense" is some top-ten self-hypnosis material
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Scraps:

h'lo
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

The only thing I can think of that would make a liquid lunch with Capote & his swans even stranger is a soundtrack of dreamy spiritual jazz, G

Thanks LD! I aim to slay! and yeah this is a craaaazy good Mann cut
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

h'lo yourself scraps!
Avatar 9:25pm Little Danny:

'allo Scraps!
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

Roy Ayers on vibes
  9:29pm Dean:

Can't listen just now, but you do know that that Rousseau painting inspired one of Fleetwood Mac's more attractive covers?
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

going back a bit: haha, little danny. there are few things worse than regret over records that you sold that you'd really like back
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean! and no I did not
Avatar 9:31pm geezerette:

Evan,I was imagining the way it sounded to them after second martini.
When they stopped hearing his voice and drifted away
  9:31pm Dean:

Tango in the Night: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/-uJ_WBoU-Kw/maxresdefault.jpg

Avatar 9:36pm hyde:

Avatar 9:36pm geezerette:

Loving this show.
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

I know right? sort of a mysterious release, recording date unknown. I've read somewhere that it's one of his first sessions, but I don't know about that
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

thanks, geezerette!
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

oh yeah that piano MAKES this psycho little boogaloo
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

Dolphy!
Avatar 9:45pm hyde:

Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

Scraps i just sent you an email.
and hi!
and short answer: i wasn't.
Avatar 9:48pm northguineahills:

Really like this Dolphy
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

he's just doing his thing, and they're doing theirs, and it's great

he really is always such a delight, he's so playful
Avatar 9:53pm Little Danny:

Wow, I actually prefer those two Dolphy-less Latin Jazz Quintet LPs. They're much more straightahead Latin jazz of course
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

* the ones led by Juan Amalbert that is
Avatar 9:56pm geezerette:

Thanks for the weekly excellence, Evan!
Avatar 9:57pm hyde:

thanks Flash!
