Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 16, 2016 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Nope. Just from the Land of Disenchantment.

Flying celery stalks sounds funny, as long as no one's eye was put out.

I think I didn't pick the pieces up where they probably rolled under the fridge. I gotta get on that or my wife will REALLY think that wasn't funny.

whenever I hear this bass riff, it reminds me of this goofy new agey witchcraft radio show that ran in Portland OR in the 80s. This was the show's theme song.
Some dude who called himself The Bear who would read from Wicca, witchcraft, Magick books and play stuff like Jade Warrior, Kitaro.
He was universally despised by the other DJs and staff for some reason.

Not heard 'In And Around Greg Lake' by The Wondermints yet in any tributes.

Whenever Jon Anderson sings, "I feel lost in the city," I'm poised to hear Steve Perry, instead, "I feel lost in the ci-TAY."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Uncle Michael:

I think Jon kinda does sing ci-TAY.

No. Too horrible a thought. When it comes to Yes, I'm in denial.

yes to me is a perfect example of being too instrumentally proficient, and too editorially deficient.

Really? What part of Tales from Topographic Oceans needs to be struck? How can they more efficiently have said,

"Colored in pastures of chance
Dancing leaves cast spells of challenge
Amused but real in thought
We fled from the sea whole"

???

not lyrically. it's like they're trying to fit everything they know into 7 minutes.

It is hard to argue that they're not bombastic and pretentious, true. Even Beethoven knew how to kick back and riff now and then.

I think Mike Rutherford has to be one of most over-looked Rock bass guitarists. So many of his Gabreil-era bass parts are nuts. Just sayin'......I'm more the school of Dennis Dunaway/JJ Burnell/Trevor Bolder, but much respect for Squire, who no doubt moved mountains for the electric rock bass, along with the great Ox, of course, and Jack Bruce.

Great insight, VP. I'm a huge Gabriel-era fan, but I've always subliminally figured Rutherford was struggling to keep up. I have no good reason for that sense. Another great JJ bassist: Avenel. He is missed.

Great show, UM. Loved the request bit.
I'm in India for the next three weeks, so may not be tuning in much but wishing you a happy time over the Christmas and New Year holiday.
