Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm fred:

Good afternoon Jason
Avatar 3:07pm Jason Elbogen:

Hey Fred... Do you 'do' Christmas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Ike:

Is this the Canadian non-union equivalent of Thomas Dolby?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Alex In Illinois:

There are many sects and offshoots in Christianity. Most hold that the Jesus character did not get married, but you never know what can be found. It is not as if there is any evidence for what Jesus, or Iesus, or Yeshua bin Yosef did or did not do during his life, or even if he did live, so every now and then someone just makes up more stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm melinda:

hi Jason, Fred, Ike and the rest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm melinda:

@Alex: true. Jesus history is murky to say the least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm fred:

@Jason: Not really. I will go to my brother's for lunch, but it's mostly about our traditional exchange (and tasting) of good whisky
Avatar 3:26pm Scraps:

My parents are married 54? 55? years now. It's weird how that makes me feel old, yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm fred:

We do have weird tenses almost nobody can get right. English is pretty logical: "have been" now, just add "will" to put that in the future. I'm not sure putting a label on it really helps
Avatar 3:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Jason_:

Timezone appropriate greetings, Jason & listeners. Pretty sure that Christmas Trees are another of those pagan traditions that Christianity ripped-off, so as long as they don't get adorned with Angels, us secularists and atheists can get away with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Jason_:

(although I also remember reading that angels are of dubious provenance, and maybe a medieval invention of some kind)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Alex In Illinois:

@melinda: but is it even "history", or just mythology?

@fred: Where? oh, I see you are French! Don't you have some kind of cake, and who ever gets the piece that has some object in it wears a crown?

And isn't there a delicious pork pie? Or is that just among Quebecois?
Avatar 3:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'The Christ Conspiracy' by Archarya S. : www.amazon.com...
Thank You, Alex. It always begins w/ the cultural premise that Christ lived in reality & there's some supposed evidence - of something ...somewhere ...we're all supposed to know about & accept. So - show me this irrefutable stuff for your gargantuan claims, already.
As a NeoPagan~ish sort, I should love Xmas to pieces - for nothing is more Pagan than Xmas. It's just too compulsory & over-the-top, though. When people are dying on Black Friday - you need to shut the thing off & start from scratch - as is true of so many of civilization's institutions @ this point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm fred:

@Alex: that crown thing is in January (and an awkward office party I do my best to avoid)
Avatar 3:37pm Jason Elbogen:

[As I was typing in the 'Artist' field for this track it occurred to me that perhaps this might be the longest group/person name I've ever played/typed into my show]
  3:39pm melinda:

@Alex: it might all be mythology. Also, I thought pork pie was just a Québécois thing.
Avatar 3:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...on the other hand - Xmas is like when all of Society agrees to Trip Out - & acknowledge that compassion & pleasure & even awe might possibly have some value in life - if even to ghettoize it into one season...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm fred:

@Jason_: Angels are an invention? Their share is all too real though. So who is drinking it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm PMD:

First time listening...
Avatar 3:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Definition of 'Mythology': Someone *else's* Religion...
Avatar 3:41pm still b/p:

I do like a Christmas tree, but I recall, though I can't reach into the Googley innards to find just now, an old magazine cartoon showing a wide landscape, bare except for countless clean-cut stumps, being regarded by two Native Americans, and one saying, "White man, him say, 'What Christmas without a tree?'"
Avatar 3:43pm Jason Elbogen:

This song is about marrying Jesus (I think).
Avatar 3:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the perfect example of not being able to see the Forest for No Trees...
  3:43pm melinda:

I don't like the hyper-commercialism of Christmas but love the lights, baubles, pine, and general coziness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Jason_:

@fred mea culpa, should have added a few levels of quotation marks. Welcome back BTW, hope you have recovered (and aren't sick of being asked that).
Avatar 3:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It *is* Solstice - the longest night of the year. So - whatever gets you thru the night - as the poet said.
Avatar 3:46pm still b/p:

From last year, and I remember saying, "Hm.... Hm.":
Woman marries Jesus Christ, becomes consecrated virgin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Alex In Illinois:

@ Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Xmas? If you're a pagan then Io Saturnalia! Yes, I get sick of it too, and I agree about Black Friday. But Wednesday I celebrated the Solstice. That is the real "reason for the season". And I admit, that I recently enjoyed a Steel Guitar rendition of the melody known for "Oh Holy Night".

@melinda: I think you are right about the tasty pork pie being Québécois.
Avatar 3:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nuns marry Jesus. The Church is the Bride - &tc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Alex In Illinois:

@Jason: If there are any "Serious Christians" here, then I am making a bigger ass of myself and offending them more than you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm fred:

@Jason_: Looks like I'm the one who should apologize: whisky seems to be a medieval invention, so angels were not required before then. It actually fits. As for dubious provenance, I like the legend that Irish monks invented whisky after learning to make perfume in the middle east
  3:54pm melinda:

I think if a secular person of Christian heritage calls themselves Christian, devout Christians would disagree with that assessment. Would devout Jews not recognize secular Jews as Jews? I assume they would but I might be wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Alex In Illinois:

Next week, I will be celebrating Xmas AND Chanukah, even though I am an Atheist. So will my sister even though she is Buddhist. I am part of a blended family.

@Jason: It is a holiday of Pagan origin. It was the Saturnalia. The rebirth of the Sun. That is why it is so close to the Solstice.

Homer Simpson voice: Stupid Constantine!
Avatar 3:58pm Jason Elbogen:

No matter how little observant/non-observant a Jewish person is observant, s/he is still considered Jewish by Jews, even the Orthodox. On this matter, Hitler and many of Trump's followers agree.
Avatar 3:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I hung w/ well-known sort of high-level NeoPagans on the West Coast - celebrated Solstice w/ them...then - they all f*cked off to their families - & had freaking Christmas. Ha ha. I mean - most of what is observed & celebrated in Western Xmas Tradition derives from other than Christianity. A lot of it doesn't actually go back that far - Rudolph in the 40s, Santa Claus - himself a real amalgam - most of his imagery & character to the late 1800s - right? A lot derives from North European immigrants to the U.S. In this sense - it's rather an appealing organic aggregation that just happened...but the Christian thing of Jesus - then & Saint Nicholas (East European) gets insisted on. Even Xtian scholars who insist on the historic Jesus eschew his birth this time of year. He's imposed on Solstice as a Solar Hero, symbolically - which is - after all - Natural. It's complicated, too, then... But yeah - Jewish people get this attitude forced on them - while Xmas is presumed to be Universal - obviously true. The degree to which Xmas is German & North European isn't exactly a comfort zone for the Jewish either, necessarily...
Avatar 4:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Christ is Jewish anyway - it's all so atavistic, tribal, & stupid...
Avatar 4:01pm still b/p:

Mayne the Irish monks'd be likin' a bit of the whisky humor. When Uncle Michael played something from The FIghting Jamesons last week, listener Glen says, "The fighting jamesons morphed into the non-violent bushmills."
And I says, "The Tullamore Dewds were chill with everybody."
  4:04pm melinda:

@Jason: I think that might be the difference. There might be other countries where, in terms of Christian identity, heritage matters more than practice.
  4:07pm melinda:

Rabbit, I love the concept of Jesus as a solar hero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Alex In Illinois:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: What I find amusing is that the English-speaking Christians never got around to renaming Easter to a Christian name. It still is named after a pagan goddess!! And her rabbit still remains! The eggs too!
Avatar 4:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@melinda: Jungian stuff.
...I like the story of Xmas stopping trench warfare in WWI for a second. That's an amazing power. But that was two North European cultures w/ Germanic roots finding commonality...
@Alex: All of it - just add Christ. 'Easter' & 'estrogen' are related words, btw...
  4:10pm melinda:

I was kind of old when I discovered that Easter was a Christian holiday with religious significance for adults, not just a fun kiddie egg hunt.
Avatar 4:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Must run errands - Thx for amazing music & too much space in the comments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm fred:

@still b/p: I dunno about the monks, but I like it (your name does start with "still", no wonder you're good at this)
  4:17pm melinda:

My late husband was Jewish (though he never actually referred to himself in that way, he would identify as 'a Jew') and he celebrated Christmas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Alex In Illinois:

Regarding more or less observant Jews, next week, in South Beach, I will likely be approached by members of an Orthodox Jewish sect who intend to bring the less observant Jews back to the Orthodox faith. (I am not really Jewish, though I have been told "funny you don't look Goy")

As for my own beliefs, I think religion divides people, and we should stick to only scientific naturalistic explanations for things. I admit to indulging in "recreational religion" just like recreation drug use.
  4:30pm melinda:

I like the dancey tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm fred:

Jason, I think you're actually more observant than you think. When your show airs, Shabbat has started in Jerusalem. I think this is why your otherwise stellar technical skills sometimes fail you
Avatar 4:40pm glenn:

yeah, i'm pretty sure jesus never got married because he was a big ol' flaming homo. not that there's anything wrong with that.
Avatar 4:42pm glenn:

he was also a commie. for the life of me, i can't figure out why the republicans love the fucking guy so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Alex In Illinois:

According to that new novel "Under Tiberius" by Nick Tosches . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Alex In Illinois:

I am where you are on that too, Jason.
Swag For Life Member 4:52pm oogoo:

There are specifications for being born Jewish. Christians are muts. Heinz 57. White. The American fiction of classless plurality. The same fiction as race with the same dedicated believers. Jewish blood is a European concoction. Why is still sticks? Human behavior is built compulsion. .Freud was right.
  4:54pm melinda:

I like your rants.
Avatar 4:55pm Scraps:

Jason: My sister is a believing Catholic, and she carries over her beliefs into politics.

I know what you are saying, but could you be a little bit less 100% black-and-white?
Avatar 4:56pm Scraps:

(that is, she votes Democrat.)
Avatar 4:56pm Jason Elbogen:

The Jason Elbogen show: Come for the Music, Stay for the Rants.
  4:56pm melinda:

Maybe some devout Christian Trump voters were really voting for Pence. Which is also disturbing.
Avatar 4:59pm Jason Elbogen:

Scraps - Not that I'm suggesting it, but if you listen to all five or six mike breaks in their entirety today, you will hear nuance overall. I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Alex In Illinois:

My wife considers herself a believing Catholic as do her Nun friends, but the religious beliefs they carry into politics do not have them voting for Trump. There really are pro-LGBT, pro-choice Nuns.

There is a lot of diversity within the Catholic community.

But then there is this Evangelical, Rapture-hailing, biblical literalistic, dominionist, Xtian-right.

@melinda: Yes, I think Pence helped secure a lot of those votes.
Avatar 5:06pm Scraps:

I'm listening. ;-) Through the whole show.

I'm very much agnostic, since 13 years old. But I grew up Catholic, and there is more breadth of attitudes in them (at least in Seattle) than you would think to judge from my agnostic friends. So maybe I'm a little bit defensive.
  5:09pm wizard frog:

Happy Jesus Birthday Guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Alex In Illinois:

When I think of the Xtian-Right, I do not think Catholic. Catholic colleges and universities are accredited, as opposed to institutions like Liberty "University" or the many lesser known Fundamentalist diploma mills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm fred:

Hear you next week Jason, I'm just yawning too often by now not to get the hint that I need to sleep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Alex In Illinois:

Is it about quarter past 22 where you are Fred?
Avatar 5:14pm Jason Elbogen:

G'night, Fred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm fred:

Past 11, which is early for me, but I had a doctor appointment at 8am (which is very early for me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Alex In Illinois:

@Fred: I was thinking in 24 time. But I was wrong, by an hour, since 22 is 10 pm. So you have had a long stretch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm fred:

@Alex: I usually think in 24 time too, shows how confused I am. I went to sleep at 2am yesterday (well, this morning), so this was indeed long. I didn't adjust to these early appointments (early because I have to schedule them before work), but I won't have these for long, and I'll soon come back from shows at my usual past-midnight time, so all will fall back into place. No sense messing up my real rhythm for some one-time surgery
Avatar 5:24pm Jason Elbogen:

Everyone's dying for each other's sins these days it seems!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Alex In Illinois:

Ashkenazi - from The part of Europe, from Germany to Russia, Sephardic from Spain, but kicked out by F & I, and brought to Turkey in the late 15th century (or assimilated in Portugal).

Many of the first Jewish people to immigrate to North America were Sephardic. Aaron Lopez was Sephardic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm fred:

@Jason: One of the Principia Discordia's stamps read "King Kong died for your sins"
Avatar 5:29pm still b/p:

I wrote a long comment on Christmas choice and tradition, and one not as long with guesses and thoughts on Christian right voting. My holiday gift to all is not posting them.
Avatar 5:30pm Jason Elbogen:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Alex In Illinois:

@Jason: That Custer number was pretty funny.

I can't explain to people why I enjoy music by the Fall. I often don't understand why I can dig the lyrics, but I just do.

Hi there. Seeking comfort in some friendly sounds n names.
Avatar 5:42pm Jason Elbogen:

Jeffrey--I'll play some more soothing music next
  5:46pm Jeff g.:

Thanks, though of course one person's soothing is another's...? Just keep doing that voodoo that you do.
Avatar 5:49pm Jason Elbogen:

nothing's more soothing to Jewish people than the sounds of German Christians, by the way.
  5:52pm Jeff g.:

I actually enjoy when my wife falls into her faux German accent.

See you all, in 2017.
Avatar 5:57pm Jason Elbogen:

Jeff--it's ok. there's still time to accept Jesus as your saviour. I heard you can even do it on the comment board.
  5:58pm Jeff g.:

Pulled a bunch of Jesus hits for Sunday's D:O Radio, if folks are still jonesing for some Jeebus come Sunday.

Is it unseemly to do this kind of plug?
