This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

HI Evan, Happy New Year!
Avatar 6:53pm Flash Strap:

Evening, Explorers! Tonight we look back at a year in the Explorers Room; I will play one song each from every show of 2016 (with the exception of some of the more recent shows, where I'll switch it up with some alternates).

Playlist images are my notebook (my second since starting), where I plan playlists and make notes
Avatar 6:53pm Flash Strap:

hi Ehd!
  6:56pm Ehd:

Looking forward to some great shows in 2017 to distract from the inevitable onslaught of continuous BS.
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

I will do my best, comrade

Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:37pm hyde:

Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

god, I love this song

I'm going to see her next month; my lady love got us tickets to see her and Phillip Glass. excited to death
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

This was one of my favorite shows of the year. Man, just a whole 3 hours with Eddie Harris. Yes
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

this is one of those classic Eddie Harris songs, where there's an overdrive switch that gets hit and it all just flies away from the planet at top speed. Livin' for that moment, sometimes
Avatar 7:55pm still b/p:

In an intro to a radio story the other day on new attentions and developments in the hula tradition, the news anchor said
"Hula dancing is alive and well, and not just on your car’s dashboard."
I thought that was an annoying bit of idjit writing.
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Hi b/p! I agree, I hate that kind of thing with fire
Avatar 8:02pm still b/p:

Here's another groaner from a while back -- a year or two ago, not 50 or 75 years -- regarding sumo:
"To the untrained eye, they may look like pudgy giants in underwear shoving each other around a ring."
I want that reporter questioned, shaken and shamed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm melinda:

howdy friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Anybody ain't heard my Eddie Harris story yet?
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

Warm howdy to you, Melinda!

I ain't heard it, Rabbit! I gotta know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...saw him w/ a local pick up band when I lived in Santa Barbara. He made them sit out - & shamed the drummer just by doing rhythms by *clicking the keys/stops* on his sax. All w/out a word. It was something to witness. Not long after he played in town again - ill & very diminished. Then he soon passed away.
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

@b/p: God I hate that common, ersatz wit. HATE IT
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

god, I would love to have seen him, RR. That sounds really intense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm melinda:

Dig the Sun Araw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A fascinating communication - I never will forget it.
Avatar 8:20pm hyde:

i remember liking this June 23 show a lot
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

me too, I think. Thanks Hyde.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

this is from those recordings Roubaix did for Cousteau, which were rejected for being too weird, and then Roubaix died while diving
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm melinda:

The watery show was great too.
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

thanks, melinda! that was a weird show, I loved doing that one
Avatar 8:28pm Little Danny:

I musta missed the Mills Bros the first time around 'cause it is slaying me now
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

it's a killer, LD! from a civil war film, of all things, where they appear and perform. 1934, "Operator 13"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Geez, you could fry an egg off that playlist!
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

Hiya Doug! taking a page out of your playbook tonight, so to speak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Doug Schulkind:

The playbook comes from a lending library, my radio brother! And tomorrow morning, I will be revisiting one track from all my Friday programs in 2016. The playbook is a good book.
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

The playbook is a good book. It is decreed.

I'll be listening to THAT greatest hits tomorrow
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

damn this track is all fire
  8:46pm Ehd:

Red hot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Doug Schulkind:

My high-school sweetheart's last name was Negus. I was so madly in love with her. During most of 1979, I all but assumed there would very likely be at least one son of Negus in my family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Didn't quite work out that way.
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

hee hee hee Doug you're such a card
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

didn't actually mean to play 2 from this show, but hard to complain I guess
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

chains and chisel sounds

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Have to dash out to a thing. Would rather stay curled up with this thing of beauty.
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Nothing I'd like more than to keep you cuddled and snuggled up in the Room here, but I'd hate upon hate for you to miss a thing. Thanks for warming it up in here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Now as good as ever to say Thanks for all the Explorations.
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

The explorations were my pleasure, Rabbit. Thank you, quite sincerely thank you, for being a part of them.
Avatar 9:17pm hyde:

ah, i have been waiting for the Bee Gees reminiscing
Avatar 9:22pm still b/p:

With women, Kissinger would underline his perspective on power being the ultimate aphrodisiac by saying, "You know the Bee Gees wrote a song about me."
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

I can't believe we still hear people talk about Kissinger like he's not a top-tier war criminal. Every politician we have to choose from, on both sides, seems to feel compelled to kiss his ring

probably because the Bee Gees wrote the sexiest imaginable song about the devastation he's wrought upon the earth
Avatar 9:36pm Little Danny:

Wow, this Eddie Harris! Instant want
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

agreed, so good. lemme know if you need a hand with it
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

god, this song
Avatar 9:52pm Little Danny:

Hi all. The sound and conversation persists in the grocers store here: wfmu.org... Owned by an Austrian.
Avatar 9:53pm hyde:

thanks for the year of great shows!
Avatar 9:53pm BrassKnuckles:

I think it'll get worse next year somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm melinda:

nice ending!
Avatar 9:54pm still b/p:

Outstanding session of music. Thanks!
Avatar 9:54pm Little Danny:

Wonderful show Flash. And such an honor and delight to be your radio neighbor.
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

Thank you all! Hello Brass Knuckles!

The honor is mine, beloved Danny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm melinda:

This is also a nice ending! I have this bootleg series, need to revisit.
