Found: many horses, looking for owner

geezerette:

Howdy Sam! Listening in background, digging the start.
Avatar 9:08pm
Scraps:

@geezerette, Patty Waters did do a live album, "College Tour". And your presumption is correct.
Avatar 9:11pm
geezerette:

Thanks Scraps! Makes me happy to know that.
Avatar 9:11pm
Scraps:

Oh! Didn't know. He had a very good label, too.

rip, Nat Hentoff

Sam Segal:

Peace to Nat Hentoff! Thanks for joining me @Scraps 'n' @G!
Avatar 9:16pm
geezerette:

Hats off to Hentoff. Cocktail party in Heaven.

Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus is one of them, especially the vocal take on "Fables of Faubus", which is very different from Mingus Ah Um.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Sam Segal:

When I announced the personnel on this Cecil tune, I forgot this one only had the trio of Taylor, Neidlinger, and Charles. My apologies!
Avatar 9:20pm
Scraps:

I met Denis Charles a few times, when he played in Joel Forrester's quartet. He was quirky and fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Sam Segal:

Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus was one of my very first favorite jazz albums, @Scraps! I adore that album. Mingus will be making an appearance on the program in a different context later.
Avatar 9:23pm
Scraps:

Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Doug Schulkind:

One of the great things about "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus" is the fake "live" sound effects. Mingus pretends they're playing live in a club, and it is not very convincing.
Avatar 9:40pm
Scraps:

Cal Massey is Zane Massey's (tenor saxophonist for Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, etc) dad.
Avatar 9:41pm
Scraps:

@Doug, "Don't rattle your drinks in your glasses, etc"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Doug Schulkind:

I'm a huge Cal Massey fan. Fantastic composer. Lee Morgan's performance of his "These Are Soulful Days" is a favorite.

@Scraps
Exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Sam Segal:

@Doug! I must admit...all these years I was convinced. Being the person he was, I never once questioned the idea that Mingus would ask a crowd not to clink their glasses and for the staff at the club not to let the cash registers make any sound.
Avatar 9:47pm
Scraps:

For a while, Zane Massey ran a weekly jazz sitting-in thing (aphasia, the word is escaping me) at Barbes. It was great.
Avatar 9:50pm

This dub is awesome!

Greetings, @Melinda!

If my fingers on both hands have to do all this table-tappin' along with Floorplan, they won't be making progress on necessary work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Sam Segal:

Those fingers may have to wait, cause the sanctified house segment of the program ain't quite over, @stillbp! Thanks for dropping by the Horse show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Doug Schulkind:

You mean Sanctified Horse Show, Sam.

The Clown!

I haven't heard this one! Only the original, I think on Atlantic, with Jean Sheppard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Sam Segal:

I was blown away when I found this. Apparently the only known recording of Duke and Mingus outside of Money Jungle.
Avatar 11:01pm
Scraps:

Good town, Dubuque.
Avatar 11:02pm

That's a wonderful find, Sam

So distinctive trumpet, you can tell Hassell in one note
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Sam Segal:

Jon Hassell is relatively new territory for me, which is quite exciting. I've been a fan of supposed Fourth World music from Japan for awhile, and I knew he coined that phrase, but I just recently got my hands on his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
coelacanth∅:

hello Sam and horse people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm

Ahoy, @coelacanth!
Avatar 11:22pm

If you haven't picked up Power Spot.... well, it's my favorite, anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for the recommendation, @Scraps. I'll try to check that one out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
coelacanth∅:

-my fave is "possible musics" (4th world vol.1)...collaboration with Eno.
i don't think i've heard power spot. i'll check that out too.

John Mangum:

I can hear your great tunes tonight, Sam! But I can't see them...
Avatar 11:30pm

Fourth Worlds 1+2 and Magic Realism are great, too

but I love his sound

Hi, @John!!

This is majestic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm

Glad you enjoyed it, @G. I believe she was reading lists from the 2/7/1997 edition of the Guardian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
coelacanth∅:

Scraps @1131 -agreed. when i first heard that, i'd never heard of him; just -back in the day i'd buy anything with Eno's name on it. i got a few tracks in before i looked to see what instrument it was, and when i saw "trumpet", i was like "i don't hear any trumpet!"

My wife used to call me the Domestic Nothing...I like their name better.
Avatar 11:48pm

Think I meant the Laurence Crane piece Sam.
Ha, but I read The Guardian often myself, just don't record it to music!
Great show! :)
