Today's show is actually more about the fiery furnace than Belshazzar's feast, but I couldn't resist playing with this image (by Rembrandt).

Good day Mr. C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Cheer in the offing, I'm sure! Howdy Charlie and all!
Avatar 12:02pm Roberto:

An unhealthy dose would also be acceptable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Webhamster Henry:

If you're looking for a Belshazzar tune, there's Mene, Mene Tekel from Harold Rome's "Pins and Needles" www.youtube.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Charlie:

well hey there, Little Danny and doctorjazz! Nothin' goin' on here but the nothin' . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm doctorjazz:

So, here's a question, is it better to be Busy Doing Nothing, or stuck in Garbage Time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Charlie:

@doctorjazz -- Yes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Charlie! Waah, I missed the Ruth Garbus numbah. I'll have to get me a copy of her new EP. Yay Ruth!
Avatar 12:24pm Roberto:

You're hitting all the high notes so far, Charlie!
Avatar 12:25pm Roberto:

Not that there's anything wrong with the low notes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

hiya mauri!
and hi Wendy del Formaggio! Yes, buy Ruth's new EP! We've gotta support our friends and local artists:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm listener james from westwood:

Raise your hand if you learned "Is You Is" from that one Tom & Jerry toon like I did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Charlie:

james -- gotta confess I first heard that song on Joe Jackson's jumpin jive album -- would like to see that cartoon though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Parq:

Not sure, but I think my first exposure to it was Jordan's own performance in the WW2 morale-builder movie "Follow the Boys" - recommended, if you haven't seen it. Heard the Jumpin' Jive version a year or two later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Charlie:

hi Parq! -- it's amazing how many songs I first heard in their non-original versions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Parq:

Charlie, oh yehhh. I constantly have that "wait, XXX was a cover?" experience when listening to FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Listener James: [raises hand]
Avatar 12:40pm Roberto:

Senior year in college -- sitting on the back porch, Black Sea on the tape deck, over and over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Charlie:

and it's amazing how many popular songs and classical pieces I know from cartoons.
  12:41pm Listening Out There:

Trying to work Vs. Busy Doing Nothing...decisions, decisions...
  12:42pm Listening Out There:

A sizable portion of my cerebral cortex is occupied by cartoon tunes, sounds, and art work.
  12:42pm Listening Out There:

[Shows up in the scans...]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Parq:

Listening, have you seen the FMU documentary movie? For those who have, remember Nick's apartment? That's what a scan of my brain would look like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

MGM and Warner Bros contributed mightily to my knowledge of both classical music and the Great American Songbook.
  12:46pm Listening Out There:

Carl Stalling, Mussorgsky, Stravinsky...
Avatar 12:46pm Roberto:

Thanks for being older than I, Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Yup, I'm often delighted by hearing a tune that I thought was composed for Warner Bros. et al but really was some old chestnut or a classical piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Brian C.:

speaking of firey furnaces, I was just rapping with my brother about Shadrack, Neeshack and Abednigo (sp? no idea), how both Johnny Cash and the Beasties had name-checked them… Love the show, Charlie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Charlie:

Hi Listening Out There -- good luck getting work done;)
I can't listen to music and do anything else at the same time, which is why I get so little done...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Webhamster Henry:

It's hard to realize there's another version of "The Five O'Clock Whistle" that's not sung by Red Riding Hood! (RED RIDING RABBIT)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Charlie:

@Parq -- I have seen the movie, and I know what you're talking about! although I have fewer action figures;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Charlie:

@Roberto -- someone hadda be older than you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Charlie:

hey there, Brian C, thanks for dropping by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Charlie:

@Henry -- well, that's definitely the best version!
Avatar 12:54pm Roberto:

It seems fewer and fewer folks are willing to take on that responsibility as time goes on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Parq:

The one that knocked me out was "I Love to Sing-a" -- I always took it for granted that the song was a Looney Tunes original. But no, there is a video out there of Al Jolson and Cab Calloway dueting on the song -- from penthouses across the street from each other, yet -- in "The Singing Kid".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I know I'm not getting a damn bit of work done while this "I'm Sorry" song is on. This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Parq:

I'm sorry, boss, but I always stop work when the Clams' "Sorry" plays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

"Owl Jolson"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Parq:

Her cousin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Charlie:

"Jack Bunny"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

Hoping fellow GTDR DJ Tony Coulter is well; apparently Portland got walloped with snow and is in a state of emergency.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Charlie:

this song features the classic line: "Then you had to go and spoil it/ In the gender-neutral toilet"
Avatar 1:08pm βrian:

A foot of snow? Pah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm listener james from westwood:

The "And Then He Kissed Me" is strong with this track. Not that this is a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Charlie:

Wow, I did not know that Portland got so much snow! or that it caused a state of emergency.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Wendy del Formaggio:

A foot of snow? I have that all over my front yard. And it's 50 degrees here today. But, where I live, that much snow is normal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm listener james from westwood:

This show tune is a real treat. And not just b/c I'm editing a huge religion textbook.
Avatar 1:22pm βrian:

Hearing lyrics in French tickles my Wernicke's area. Kind of like ASMR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm listener james from westwood:

Weird stuff out in OR. End of March/start of April I caught achingly beautiful spring weather with only 1 rainy day over a week and change. Locals said it was way atypical for the time of the year.
Avatar 1:22pm Carmichael:

We have 10 feet of snow in Lake Tahoe, and raging rivers after 3 inches of rain yesterday. Welcome break of weather nothingness. Heya Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Charlie:

ßrian -- hmm, I wonder if I have a Wernicke's area...
Avatar 1:23pm Carmichael:

And it does snow in Portland OR, just normally not all at once like earlier this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Wendy del Formaggio:

I was hoping you'd play this Beastie Boys tune! Then again, I always hope someone plays something from "Paul's Boutique," partly because I can't play many of the songs on my show because we're not internet-only. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Brian C.:

("Fourth Man in the Fire" by Johnny Cash fwiw)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Charlie:

hi there Carmichael:)
Avatar 1:25pm βrian:

EvConComm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Charlie:

Henry -- a while back I played a great version of Ring of Fire by Ray Charles. also dig the version by Grace Jones...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Webhamster Henry:

Grace Jones would be good -- I don't think Nina Simone did it, too bad!
Avatar 1:30pm βrian:

People grow up in Connecticut? I'd never considered that.
Avatar 1:32pm βrian:

Ooh, this bed music makes me crave a tiny-umbrella cocktail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

Liking that Pins and Needles track even more now that I know that about it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm listener james from westwood:

I'll have what βrian's having.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Webhamster Henry:

Pins and Needles was a staple of my youth! Harold Rome, a Hartford native, gave a little concert in Hartford near the end of his life and he stood up and took a picture of the audience, saying "This is the largest gathering of relatives I'm likely ever to see again!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Charlie:

nice, Henry:)
Avatar 1:41pm βrian:

If you want a cookie, I *highly* recommend this recipe. It's a bit of a pain, but yowza, they are worth it: www.splendidtable.org...
Avatar 1:42pm Carmichael:

Eric Burdon and War do a great version of Ring of Fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm listener james from westwood:

We maaaaay have hopped onto the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm listener james from westwood:

Unless Yvonne opens w/a long piano and strings bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Charlie:

oh #*@% -- my streaming software has been acting up lately -- i have to restart the old laptop that runs it -- sorry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm doctorjazz:

Loving this Szymczak!
Avatar 1:47pm βrian:

There we go ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm listener james from westwood:

No worries, Charlie—we're back! All tech gives us the stink-eye now and again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm listener james from westwood:

Dinah's coming through loud and lovely!
Avatar 1:48pm Roberto:

Yeah the stream had a moment of fakakta farblunjetude there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Charlie:

Go back and listen to Yvonne on the archive -- the archives come from my recording of the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm doctorjazz:

Was that the stream?Oh well, sounded good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm doctorjazz:

More Cecil Taylor sounding than anything going on here today...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Parq:

< hears ECC remix, does spit take >
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Webhamster Henry:

TradeMark Gunderson is at it again!
Avatar 1:54pm βrian:

When will Charlie let us eat lunch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Charlie:

Yes, Henry!
ßrian -- five minutes;)
Parq -- lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Charlie:

I've decided that Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane of Spanky and Our Gang got her vocal delivery from Della Reese, or else they just have similarly dynamic pipes.
Avatar 1:56pm Carmichael:

In the US, this band would be called The Bobby Pins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm listener james from westwood:

That inebriated sax can only mean one thing....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm listener james from westwood:

@Carmichael: I had no idea!
Avatar 1:59pm βrian:

I was thinking of Dinah Shore, as well.
Avatar 2:00pm βrian:

No relation to a key grip, then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Charlie!
Avatar 2:00pm Roberto:

Ciao Ciarlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Dominick:

Thanks
