This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Evening explorers!
  6:53pm Ehd:

Hi Flash, are you driving up for the march?
Avatar 6:54pm Flash Strap:

regrettably, no, but I'll be attending the one in Raleigh. You?
  6:57pm Ehd:

I'm close to DC, Yep.
Avatar 6:58pm Flash Strap:

wonderful, Ehd
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm doctorjazz:

Hi, great opening!
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi there, Doc Jazz! Hard to beat it really
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Dave in Vermont:

Good morning.
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Good morning, brother Dave
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Dave in Vermont:

Hey, Flash when I first tuned in to your show a long time ago did I understand that you are in St Louis?
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

heye, i started my day listening to Paul Bley (Mr. Joy)
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde!

I was in St. Louis back then, but these days I look around and find myself in Bahama, NC. You have ties to STL, Dave in Vermont?
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

God damn I love Annette Peacock, she is SAVAGE on that moog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Dave in Vermont:

I was born there. Moved away when i was 10ish but my mom moved back there; got lots o' fam there.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

I was only there three strange years, it's quite a place. High highs and low lows
Avatar 7:15pm geezerette:

Yay Evan!!!
Hi gang!
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

Hi geezerette! That's one hell of an avatar, sister!
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

Yoko's been ready for this shit for years, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Dave in Vermont:

Strange, indeed.
Avatar 7:18pm geezerette:

haha,thanks man. :D
Avatar 7:19pm geezerette:

this is a great record!
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

I love how unapologetic her rhetoric is, i mean she does not try to play it cool. She just says the thing that she wants to say

Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

That whole album is great
Avatar 7:21pm geezerette:

Me too! :)
Avatar 7:23pm hyde:

it seems sort of appropriate here to point out that i *just* got word that my niece is on a plane to Stockholm because her metal record got nominated for a Swedish grammy
Avatar 7:24pm geezerette:

Congratulations hyde! Fingers crossed!
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

That is such crazy good, interesting news, Hyde! A Swedish Grammy! Congrats, congratulations
Avatar 7:28pm hyde:

thanks, you guys! i didn't even know there were Swedish grammys. i think she's probably most excited about a free trip to Stockholm.
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

what's her band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Dave in Vermont:

Fuckin, Betty Davis!
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

She is incredible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm doctorjazz:

Congrats, Hyde! Good luck with the awards! Do you get herring if you win?
Avatar 7:33pm hyde:

the record is Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas. She's Julie Christmas (she was born on Xmas day)
Avatar 7:34pm hyde:

@doctorjazz i asked for some Swedish fish
Avatar 7:36pm hyde:

(actually the record is Mariner by C of L & JC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm doctorjazz:

Is that record "Mariner"? I just checked Amazon, they have it. Very cool! Tough to be in the performance arts...my older daughter is trying for musical theater, spends days waiting many hours to get 1 minute to audition, waitresses the rest of the time (had some local theater that just finished). Best of luck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm doctorjazz:

Oops, I see it is Mariner, didn't see the last post.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Doug Schulkind:

The Drum Is a Woman.

The Womb Is a Drummin'
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

damn doug that is a scientifically good word-play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Word playing truth to power.
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Next track here might be a Doug classic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Flash Strap is GIVING BIRTH this evening.
Avatar 7:49pm geezerette:

Gods,this playlist! :D
Avatar 7:50pm hyde:

ooh, i don't know this one. it's great.
Avatar 7:52pm geezerette:

Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

me too!!! I mean, DAMN
Avatar 7:54pm geezerette:

like Last Poets. Or Amiri Baraka.
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Besides being an unbelievably powerful poet, Jayne Cortez is also Ornette Coleman's wife, and Denardo's mother
Avatar 7:57pm hyde:

i just turned my stereo up as loud as it can go
Avatar 7:57pm geezerette:

70s birthed many revolutions. Easy to forget that.
Thnks for memory nudge.

Wow, talk about a power couple!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

we'll hear some more Jayne a little later, with Denardo on drums
Avatar 7:58pm Little Danny:

Hi Flash and all! Just tuned in and this Wanda Robinson is already blowing my mind
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

that's the ticket Hyde! Don't blow those life-giving speakers now

Hi LD!
Avatar 7:59pm geezerette:

Do you know the LA poet Wanda Coleman?
She was wonderful too.
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

I don't think so! I'll have to get-to-know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Doug Schulkind:

I once stood next to Ornette a good long while at a Jayne/Firespitters show. Could barely breathe.
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

@geezerette i just packed up the Wanda Coleman book that i bought when i was a college student in the 80's ;)
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Virtually literally.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

we'll hear some Firespitters, this set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm doctorjazz:

Time to drive home, catch the rest in the car, thanks for the great show!
Avatar 8:03pm geezerette:

Doug I'd have the same response!
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for tuning in, Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right On.
Avatar 8:04pm geezerette:

hyde, great that you have that! :)
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

Maxayn, minus the singer Maxayn Lewis, became the masked-man electrofunk project Mandré!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm melinda:

hi y'all!
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Hi Rev Rab! Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So proud of the Women.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes yes yes absolutely yes, Flash.
  8:11pm MrFab:

I remember Wanda Coleman well, Saw her on the same bill as Jello Biafra at a spoken word show at my uni.
Avatar 8:12pm hyde:

@Mr Fab ok, wow
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi MrFab, that sounds like quite a ticket
Avatar 8:14pm coelacanth∅:

What's going on here! Break it up or i'm hauling y'all to jail. who d'ya think y'are? Mind your place!
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

Coelacanth! Welcome, pig!
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:16pm hyde:

this show is crazy good
Avatar 8:17pm Hams:

Avatar 8:17pm coelacanth∅:

damn, sometimes being a channeler is scary!

ehem, it's me now. just an insignificant old fish.
hi Evan and Explorers.
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, Hyde. That Cortez track is so good, i just can't stand it. It really means something. I love her
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hams!

Glad to have ya back C.! Sorry for the rude welcome, but that's roleplay for ya
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Linda Sharrock is a lightning bolt to the brain
Avatar 8:21pm Hams:

there's a good tribute to sharrock on SPACE GHOST COAST TO COAST. a whole episode in memory of him.
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

i love that show
Avatar 8:23pm hyde:

hmm, i'm getting some dropouts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Ike:

Yep, me too.
Avatar 8:23pm Little Danny:

Yeah, me too hyde. Very brief tho
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

ah shit. should be back now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Doug Schulkind:

The connection just rebuffered and kicked back to the stream a few times. The music playing on the stream during this: THELONIOUS MONK.

It's all good.
Avatar 8:25pm Little Danny:

Haha, thanks Doug! I was curious about that
Avatar 8:26pm hyde:

yeah, seems fine now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Wow. Doing a double-take over here. I remember hearing that Drifters track in early November 2008 being played completely unironically.
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

man, i wondered about that
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

  8:41pm MrFab:

When Obama won, kenny G played this song for all 3 hours of his show.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

I still play this track unironically. Trump might have the White House, but it's still CC in my book
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

holy shit, mr fab
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

this is my all-time #1 Parliament track, for sure, for sure
Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

@MrFab you have the best anecdotes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Doug Schulkind:

This isn't just a radio show, it's a doctoral dissertation.
Avatar 8:45pm Flash Strap:

i do my bext to play with the text
  8:45pm MrFab:

Ha, thanks Hyde! Well, if you really really like this song, I think that show is still archived.
Avatar 8:48pm geezerette:

Ah,sing it Miss Simone!!!
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

One of the great organizing-oriented funk jams, right here. YOU HAVE THE POWER TO NEGATE
Avatar 8:52pm hyde:

i lowered my speaker volume for a bit. BUT IT'S BACK UP NOW
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

Peace is not the absence of war, it is the absence of the rules of war and the threats of war and the preparation for war

yes please
Avatar 8:57pm geezerette:

Evan this whole show is exhilarating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm JtotheK:

dropping by to say hi! also, now wondering about #1 favorite Parliament track...(does this also include the Parliaments era?) ... oh my.... and is reminded that the 'come in out of the rain' 45 is ever so elusive... hi everyone!
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Hi J-K! Generally I prefer Funkadelic and The Parliaments to Parliament, and Parliament to P-Funk, if that helps
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

it's all good in its way, though. I am a Funkadelic boy to the end of days and that's the deal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Doug Schulkind:

OK, this is where I start weeping. Externally.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

thanks, g, and I'm glad of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm JtotheK:

Parliaments have some outstanding 45s. (Reminds me, I need to find "Don't Be Sore At Me" ... again.) Also, if I ever stumble across their 45 on Golden World for 50 cents, that'd be pretty nifty.
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

you won't be alone doug i've been feeling some feelings myself
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm melinda:

I've read that in Eisenhower's first draft of his speech he referred to the 'military-industrial-congressional complex'.
Avatar 9:05pm Flash Strap:

Vocals on this find you in your gut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm JtotheK:

My fave Parliament LPs ... Osmium and Mothership. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain and Free Your Mind... There's a really great Wax Poetics from a few years ago that has the entire issue dedicated to Parliament/Funkadelic. Gonna have to dig out and re-read.
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Super curious who's on the synth here, I've never seen a credit I don't think
Avatar 9:07pm hyde:

my take on Parliament etc is that the first LP i ever bought by any incarnation of those bands is The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein that i got at Strawberiies for $3.99, and in some ways it will always remain my favorite even if it is not the best
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

I'm so completely obsessed with the first three Funkadelic LPs I can barely see beyond them sometimes. They are so rock solid genius

America Eats Its Young is amazing too. Favorite Parliament LPs are Choco City and Osmium
Avatar 9:11pm geezerette:

melinda,I heard the same thing but don't remember where.
What were you reading?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Doug Schulkind:

This was engineered by the maestro Rudy Van Gelder.
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

wow, I didn't know that. The guy has so many unbelievable credits to his good name
Avatar 9:15pm coelacanth∅:

i've been trying and still can't hear a synthesiser in this
Avatar 9:15pm geezerette:

Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

I wonder if he's handling the synth?

C: you'll hear it when it pops back out of teh mix for sure, but it's a sort of cricket-sounding metallic drone. sort of
Avatar 9:17pm coelacanth∅:

there! right on cue.
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

end of that sounds so much like Neu!'s Negativland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm melinda:

I don't remember where I first saw it. But I googled just now and it came up in an interview with Norman Lear.
Avatar 9:17pm hyde:

this show feels to me like a classic up-and-back rollercoaster, where you threw in the Drifters and Little Jo Ann just for a breather, so we wouldn't get too exhausted
Avatar 9:18pm geezerette:

Lear would know. :)
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

First heard this on Doug's show, of course. Instantly became my 2nd favorite Jeanne Lee performance (after Blasé naturally)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Doug Schulkind:

I am trembling at the presentation of this particular number.
Avatar 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

one website lists "romulus franceschini, donald F.cooper (electronics)" for that archie shepp album.
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

Ha, man, Little Jo Ann was like a no-breather for me

Doug, I know the feeling

C, that sounds like one of the synthy-boy fake names!
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

poking around, Romulus is also credited as a conductor for Shepp's Attica Blues... Donald F Cooper is sort of a ghost
Avatar 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

romulus franceschini?!
...he's also played with sunny murray and Khan Jamal - at least.
Avatar 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

...and cal massey.
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

yeah, I saw that! Never heard it though
Avatar 9:31pm geezerette:

She's astonishing, and this show is my introduction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Jeanne Lee taught music to NYC school children for many years. Can you just imagine being one of her students? Life changing!
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

G: She does the vocals on Archie Shepp's Blasé, and her work on the title track is one of the greatest performances I've ever ever heard. Highly recommended to give it a listen or ten or a hundred
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

unbelievable Doug. unfathomable
Avatar 9:35pm geezerette:

Absolutely! Lucky kids!
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

Doug: is it Jee-anne or Jeanie, pronunciation-wise?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Doug Schulkind:

And her version of "There Is a Balm in Gilead" on that same record is a wonderment.
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:36pm geezerette:

Thanks Doug and Evan. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Pronounced just like Jean.
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

aha, thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Dave in Vermont:

Great show. Sorry I missed the middle. Archives on Saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Dave in Vermont:

Fiona Apple's song written for this weekend.

See ya in the archives, brother dave
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

will do, geezerette! thanks in advance
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

I wish I knew what this song was about. She just sounds so defiant
Avatar 9:57pm geezerette:

my pleasure Evan.
Avatar 9:58pm geezerette:

this song shimmers.
Avatar 9:59pm hyde:

thanks, pal
Avatar 9:59pm Hams:

glad i heard this.
Avatar 9:59pm geezerette:

has a Piaf sort of quality.
Avatar 10:00pm coelacanth∅:

Thank you
