Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm melinda:

hi all
Avatar 10:08pm Little Danny:

Pete, right on time brother!
Avatar 10:09pm Little Danny:

It's Melinda! The party begins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Scraps:

h'lo everyb'dy.

I'm home, after a time of locking out of my house. whee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm melinda:

Glad you're back in, Scraps!
Avatar 10:10pm Little Danny:

Hi Scraps, welcome! Did you get in through a window?
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

I can't tell y'all how much it means to be surrounded by my radio family in these ominous times. So, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Scraps:

Nope. I waited till someone else who had keys showed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Scraps:

Actually, I waited at my parents place, so it wasn't too bad
Avatar 10:12pm Flash Strap:

damn this TRACK
Avatar 10:13pm hyde:

i have apparently once again turned up my stereo as loud as it can go
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

That pleases me, hyde
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Scraps:

Wow, i can't do that (turn up the stereo as high as it will go, i mean)
Avatar 10:15pm hyde:

@Scraps i live in Nowheresville
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm melinda:

@Danny: I feel the same way. Tomorrow and Saturday while others are marching or inaugurating I will be puttering and listening to FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Scraps:

Nice, sometimes
Avatar 10:17pm Little Danny:

I can't remember the last time I really cranked the home stereo
Avatar 10:19pm Little Danny:

hyde, how nowhere is your nowheresville? Can you beat my isolated town of ca. 2000 people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm melinda:

My home stereo has been blinky for years, one of my resolutions is to get a new receiver and set up my turntable. I know hardly anything about stereo systems so I have put it off.
Avatar 10:28pm hyde:

@LD ha, no. my Nowheresville for now is Woodstock. NY. which though i have no totally closeby neighbors, is still the overcrowded Northeast ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Scraps:

mmmm, kona koasters
Avatar 10:38pm Little Danny:

Thanks hyde, I don't know why I got weirdly competitive about nowhere towns. Woodstock is in a beautiful area either way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm melinda:

Dig the Gueneca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm melinda:

Being in a nowhere town can be rough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Scraps:

Kris Holmes sounds like he lives in a very small area. Though I dunno, maybe I'm wrong and he lives in Abilene or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm melinda:

Marathon is tiny, yes.
Avatar 10:43pm Little Danny:

Oh, Kris lives in Marathon which is incredibly small and isolated. Though weirdly close (60 miles) to me here in Marfa. I think Marathon has a population of like 400 or so people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Scraps:

Ah! Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm melinda:

I lived in a town of 500 or so in VT. It was an interesting experience of community but I'm glad I no longer live there.
Avatar 10:48pm Little Danny:

Melinda, I bet! The daily social life of small towns is so pressurized
Avatar 10:48pm Dano59:

top of the set has been groovy so far ... soundtracking: night in the city, a train clacking past, zoom in on two lovers on the platform, and musicians off in a corner, before parting ways after a gig, breaking out their instruments and busking. And the next train comes ...
  10:48pm MrFab:

Small towns? But...what about record stores?!
Avatar 10:49pm Dano59:

greater woofstock must have record stores.
Avatar 10:49pm Little Danny:

Hi Dano59! Love that visualization. Funny, trains seem to work their way into a lot of my escapist reveries
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Scraps:

I'm a very very city boy. I hate living even in a suburb, let alone a far out suburb. New York would be perfect, if I could afford to live there
Avatar 10:50pm Dano59:

don't ask what happens next. i was just making pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Never heard this gem before. Yowza!
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

Hi MrFab! It's pretty bleak here, though the aforementioned Kris Holmes recently scored in a big way in one of the shittiest record stores on the planet in nearby Alpine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm melinda:

Small town life means online shopping. And a lot of driving to bigger towns. I had visions of being closer to nature, which was a positive feature of being small town/rural, but having to drive a lot seems anti-nature.
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

Hi Doug, it brings me pleasure to have played that for you!
Avatar 10:52pm Dano59:

the only city things I crave are culture, and anonymity. a small college city affords me much of the former, but not enough of the latter.
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

@melinda, exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Scraps:

The internet must be a godsend, mostly, to very small towns & music
Avatar 10:53pm Little Danny:

Listener poll: what's the population of your town/city? I'm around 2,000.
Avatar 10:53pm hyde:

bedtime for me, my friends. enjoy.
Avatar 10:54pm Dano59:

agreed @scraps... if used properly, and in moderation...

night hyde
Avatar 10:54pm Little Danny:

Oh man Scraps is it ever. I don't think I'd be able to do it otherwise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Scraps:

Yeah, melinda, and I don't drive (and can't drive now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm melinda:

I think small college cities are about my speed. I had childhood dreams of living in NYC but after several years in a college town of about 60,000 I realized it suited me well.
Avatar 10:55pm Dano59:

I'm not sure of my current village's population, but Ithaca where I work is over 30K year-round, maybe 55K when schools are in session.
  10:56pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Love that Gerald Wilson track Danny, there was a fantastic interview with him on Marfra KRTS a couple of years ago, too bad not archived, The Jazz show Wednesday night 8 to 9 m, west Texas Jazz. Sent me hunting more of his fantastic sophisticated output. Realy diggin this set, Latin and faux Latin! !
Avatar 10:56pm Dano59:

Home in Horseheads is 10,000 or less, is my guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm melinda:

Night hyde!
My town is about 65,000, metro area 230,000-ish.
Avatar 10:57pm Dano59:

2,000 is more my speed! and culture less than an hour away, 2 for larger cities
Avatar 10:57pm Dano59:

and bunnies in the yard.
  10:58pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Yep amen on that Melbourne Australia is 4 million, and a total rat race
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Scraps:

I'm in Snohomish County, no city. Basically, a suburb of Everett (100,000), which is a suburb of Seattle. Too far away
Avatar 10:59pm geezerette:

Been away, dug the Cozy Cole. Cr-a-a-azy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm coelacanth:

Yes! This!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Doug Schulkind:

It's a perpetual pleasure motion machine, Little Danny! Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Avatar 11:01pm Dano59:

snohomish? not far from Twin Peaks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm melinda:

Ithaca is a pretty town.
  11:01pm MrFab:

Heh, "Conga Twist's initial melody is very similar to Joy Division's "Isolation." Coincidence?!
Avatar 11:01pm geezerette:

It's aerobic!
  11:02pm MrFab:

Oh, and LA county's population is around 10 million. Last time I counted.
Avatar 11:03pm Dano59:

ithaca is pretty full of itself. but yes, @melinda, gorges, as they say. big city stuff creeping in, hotels, high cost of living, too much traffic... the tradeoff for all the pluses. One of the best local music scenes in the country, is the big one for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Doug Schulkind:

That's 8-11am, central time, buddy!
Avatar 11:04pm geezerette:

Gerald Wilson was an elegant guy.
Avatar 11:05pm Dano59:

Gerald was one of the cats playing on the train platform of my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Scraps:

Dano59: yep. Don't care it, but Forks was much, much worse, as far as television shows set in Washington go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Scraps:

Don't care FOR it
Avatar 11:07pm geezerette:

How perfect, Dano. :)
Avatar 11:08pm Dano59:

hmmm ... took me more than 20 years to truly get Twin Peaks. -- will have to mull on some trivia - TV shows set in Seattle or WA.
  11:08pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Gerald Wilson's Viva Tirado is a must listen for everybody, and yep he was a real gentleman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Scraps:

Well, I don't care for any of Lynch's stuff
Avatar 11:10pm Dano59:

I've been to the double-vision waterfall, ,,, what, not even The Straight Story? his most unLynchian film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Scraps:

Haven't seen that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm melinda:

I like the Straight Story but can't get into his other stuff, though I've tried.@Scraps: you'd never know it's a David Lynch film if his name weren't attached to it.
Avatar 11:12pm Dano59:

Richard Farnsworth. Heartland drama. Weirdness factor: 0
Avatar 11:12pm geezerette:

Hey Pete!
And everyone!
Avatar 11:12pm Little Danny:

Fascinating to hear about everybody's places of residence and the populations therein. Way more metro than I woulda guessed
  11:13pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Hi geezerette
Avatar 11:14pm Little Danny:

@Pete: I will never tire of "Viva Tirado." Another composition that covers well
Avatar 11:14pm Little Danny:

New season of Twin Peaks in May 2017!
Avatar 11:15pm Dano59:

Danny, you being in Marfa was a surprise for me! I've seen a lotta small Texas towns ... Edam was a good one.
Texas is a good cross-cultural melting pot, if only geographically ... Tex-Mex wouldn't exist without German immigrants bringing accordions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Scraps:

@melinda, @Dano59, Hmm. Mostly I don't watch movies anymore, but that interests me....
Avatar 11:16pm Dano59:

yes indeed. I'm glad it isn't this month as previously teased! Gives me time to free my schedule.
  11:16pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

You bet Danny, did you ever here that interview with Wilson, just before he died? Really nice and showed what a talented and warm person he was.
Love El Chicanos version of Tirado!! A Todo Madre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm melinda:

Bonus feature of the Straight Story: Harry Dean Stanton shows up at the end.
Avatar 11:17pm Dano59:

it's the one Lynch movie if you hate Lynch movies.
Avatar 11:19pm Little Danny:

@Dano59: totally! When I used to live in Austin I loved just driving around the small towns of central Texas on the weekends, taking photos and looking for records and fun vintage stuff
Avatar 11:20pm Dano59:

i think you could mash up Edgar Winter's Frankenstein with the first part of this record...
Avatar 11:20pm Little Danny:

@Pete: never heard that interview, alas
Avatar 11:22pm Little Danny:

I can almost hear that now Dano
  11:23pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Danny, try and retrieve it from my HD think I captured it, and mp3 it, If I can try and send it to you, was on West Texas Jazz KRTS
Avatar 11:23pm Little Danny:

Thanks Pete, that'd be so awesome
  11:26pm MrFab:

Had no idea Gerald Wilson had an (inter)national rep. i think of him as a "local" - on staff at UCLA I think? Appearing at local festivals, etc.
  11:26pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

See what I can do, was a nice interviw, didnt catch the start, but pretty sure I got most of it,will try to find it latter if its still on the HD
  11:29pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

MrFab: He had a long arranging career and sessions etc, married a Mexican woman and think may have lived in Mexico for a while, also fed his Latin, and Mexican cultural intrests, made some very nice records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Scraps:

I have Wilson on Mosaic, which is some international fame, I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

to answer your question asked earlier, Danny, "population 5647".
Avatar 11:36pm geezerette:

Gerald Wilson taught an Introduction to Jazz class for years in LA. You had to be punctual and then listen...to the great Jazz bands, solo performers, small groups, everything that LA was rich in. Pretty great. I think he gave everyone an A. He was developing the future audience as well as exposing young musicians to possible mentors, good work habits, etc.
Generous,funny,brilliant guy.
Avatar 11:37pm geezerette:

Auditing was encouraged.
Avatar 11:41pm Little Danny:

@geez: wow! that's so cool
Avatar 11:42pm geezerette:

I meant to say the musicians performed live.
Avatar 11:43pm geezerette:

Yes,very cool.
  11:44pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Wow geezerette: great story on Gerald W,and yep "Generous, funny, brilliant guy." certainly comes across very strongly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm Scraps:

There's a long interview of Wilson:

Avatar 11:47pm Little Danny:

Sweet, thank you Scraps
  11:49pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Yep thanks as well Scraps: gonna check out that link
Great and fascinating show again, thanks Danny and night ( well its arfternoon here!) everyone
Avatar 11:51pm geezerette:

Night Pete!
  11:52pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Avatar 11:53pm geezerette:

for sure. :)
Avatar 11:54pm geezerette:

Thanks again Little Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm coelacanth∅:

this set is my jam! -esp Charles Brown.
...'reminds me too, Danny i listened to quite a lot of Pee Wee Crayton since last week and loved every second. i recognised a few of the songs too...i had him stored in my brain as "pee wee clayton".
- not much of his stuff is like Mose, after all. ...more standard bluesish - which is fine with me.
Avatar 11:57pm Dano59:

wish beware of the blog were still active to give a home to that Wilson radio interview
Avatar 11:57pm Little Danny:

Thank you geez, have a good night friend!
  11:58pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Hey Danny, have you checked out Percy Mayfields 60's and early 70's sides? On Ray Charles Tangerine label, 'I could never be President' etc Some feature the sensational Johnny Guitar Watson and yep Pee Wee Crayton, killer artist, 'The Telephone is Ringing' from 57 or so is a fantastic 45!!
Avatar 11:58pm Dano59:

this has been an instructive jazz and film night... speaking volumes of goodness
Avatar 11:58pm Little Danny:

@coel: a coupla tracks in this set came outta the Mose Allison/Pee Wee Crayton discussion from last week. Also, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny! have a great weekend
