Wow, what an album title... The bright side is that I wouldn't have wanted to be credited either on a compilation of "the music of primitive man"
  5:06pm
Dean:

Coincidence
  5:10pm
Dean:

Contradiction: to assert without qualification (such as "I changed my mind") the opposite of what one formerly said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
fred:

There's software that could do the splitting for you. There's some silence between tracks so it should work. You could transfer one while you're doing your show, in a few weeks you're done
  5:14pm
Dean:

Strictly, even with a qualification you're contradicting yourself, but I'm sensing that you're interested in the moral valence of the word.

Is Mass the Rema-Rema offshoot?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
fred:

I like (the later) Wittgenstein's take that a contradiction is a move forbidden by usual rules of logic, but that it's no big deal to make up a new rule, and a new game, to handle them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
coelacanth∅:

referring back to your conundrum - while ripping, burning, whatever it is - from the cassettes, it's not as if you wouldn't be listening to and enjoying them while you're doing it, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
fred:

@Dean: I don't think there's a contradiction if you're qualifying the way you said earlier, because the statements refer to different times. They're close enough that you use present time in both clauses, but they're like "I was once a baby, now I'm old", which isn't a contradiction. The inconsistency should be internal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
coelacanth∅:

i think there's a difference between making a statement that is contradictory to an earlier statement, and "contradicting yourself", which would be if you don't acknowledge the change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
fred:

This "girl singing" track is beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
fred:

@coelacanth: You're right, of course. I'm reading a Russell anthology these days, so it gets harder to ignore my background in logic
Avatar 5:32pm
Jason Elbogen:

The good example of a contradiction I found was this:
My younger brother is an only child.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm
fred:

It makes sense though: alt-facts are to being true what alt-right is to being right
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That contradicts itself - an internal logical contradiction.
...'You're just Contradicting me - that's not an Argument!'
- 'Yes it is.'
...'No it's not !!!'...

Yes - creating your own 'Facts' & twisting language around to convince people of them (& such techniques) is Orwellian in the extreme. & - Classic Fascist playbook bullsh*t.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
Alex In Illinois:

Yes, it makes sense, or you end up spending more time correcting the mistake the program made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
coelacanth∅:

i have never used that function of my "real time" cd burner because i assume it wont work acceptably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Alex In Illinois:

I was referring to what Jason was saying about automated track splitting software.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
coelacanth∅:

right (@5:39) ...in other words, if you want it done right, do it yourself.
  5:42pm
Dean:

My assumption is that Jason is interested in the more colloquial notion of "contradiction," the one relating to "contradicting yourself," not purely a logical contradiction. Could be wrong, though. Point taken, @fred, but if I yesterday stated, "I like X," and then today assert, "I don't like X," I have in the looser sense made a contradiction, unless I qualify the (apparent) contradiction, e.g., "I realized that X causes injury."

I don't think the example is a good one. In fact, I find it a little concerning. No, I don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
coelacanth∅:

it's something of no concern to me...so much so that it's worrisome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
fred:

Dean, I think that if I heard you say "I like X" one day and "I don't like X" the next, I would infer "something happened to make him change his mind" without thinking twice about it. So language is fine, even on a pure logic level, because all statements require formal translation. Of course there are cases where this inference is itself so wildly unlikely it cannot work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
coelacanth∅:

actually, i have had moments of being concerned at my lack of concern. that's not contradictory because it wasn't my lack of concern about my lack of concern that i was concerned about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm
fred:

@coelacanth: only if you accept the theory of types
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
fred:

@Jason: Nice move to start this set with a track called "un-compatible"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pardon if I haven't paid attention well enuff? Are we speaking Politically / topically? It's said a lot that Liberals take Drumpf literally but not seriously - where Cons take him seriously but not literally. Tho' - we may be learning to take him very seriously indeed...What has happened is there is No Accountability for anything anymore - not even from a Chief Executive. this is because Journalism & Media that might investigate & communicate a contradiction have been dismantled & Sold Out to the Oligarchy - & converted instead into Entertainment & Propaganda. Likewise also w/ the actual Government - so who could hold anyone Accountable? In whose interest could it be to do so?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
fred:

Thanks Jason. Again I thought I would only listen to half the show at most, and I couldn't turn it off before the end.
  6:00pm
Dean:

I hear you, fred, but then consider a different scenario. You hear me among a group of Xs say, "I love Xs!" Next day, among a bunch of Ys I say, "I despise Xs." Your observation is that I'm two-faced, perhaps that I have something to gain from expressing such a sentiment among Ys. This would be one of those wild cases where the inference can't work. I have plainly contradicted myself.

I'm saying that this example isn't all that different from the first "I don't like X" one. You're free to construe charitably my behavior to the extent you can, but it's the contradiction that triggers your resort to charity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx man.
