  7:21pm
JakeGould:

Bears are cool.
Avatar 7:21pm
Linda Lee:

i live around bears. only one potentially dangerous incident in 30 years. calm took care of it.
Avatar 7:24pm
Linda Lee:

so far not hearing existential fear. only personal stuff. i'm surprised!
Avatar 7:24pm
kimzilla:

@Linda Lee, That's exactly right, keeping calm is key, and yelling HEY BEAR!
Avatar 7:25pm
kimzilla:

@Linda Lee, I agree, I think people were more comfortable talking about that stuff, but I think this guy Dan's advice covers how you respond to either which was cool.
Avatar 7:26pm
Linda Lee:

yelling or confronting the bear in any way won't work. the idea is to de-escalate the sitution. no eye contact. back off. mind your own business! ~ the yelling is before you meet the bear, to let it know you're there.
Avatar 7:26pm
kimzilla:

@ Linda Lee, again, very true.
  7:28pm
James:

Oh, I know all about 'how to' You could say that my fear is reacting badly
Avatar 7:29pm
Linda Lee:

then there's fear of what you can do something about & fear of what you have no control over whatsoever ..

Avatar 7:32pm

seeing a bear is one of the most fantastic experiences too. they're really impressive animals. ..
good points, anxiety vs fear.
  7:32pm
James:

Good advice McFunyan
Avatar 7:32pm
kimzilla and Emily:

@Ken from HP: HA! That is a frequent answer we get when asking folks to call in--even (or especially) from a lot of seasoned FMU DJs!
  7:32pm
?:

phobia == fear, disgust, hate
it's latin. learn it, or leave it. i hate such illiteracy, and medics are very culpable of it.
(i just stopped listening when i heard it.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
dale:

i've had a couple of black bears at my house. gorgeous creatures. one had a tag in each ear so i know she was around folks before.
  7:34pm
Paul D:

I get panic attacks all the time, totally calling him.
Avatar 7:34pm
Linda Lee:

oh boy. ... tagged bears mean problem bears. they've been moved. & they are used to people. those are the dangerous ones.
  7:36pm
Paul D:

Great show btw, ive never heard it before!
Avatar 7:37pm
emily:

@Paul D. me too. I earnestly found this conversation to be very helpful to me!
and thank you so much! Welcome :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
dale:

linda, yeah - she would eat all my bird seed and suet which is not a big deal. then i saw a paw print about 4 feet up on my sliding glass door. i stopped feeding the birds and made sure the windows were always shut so she didn't smell garbage.
Avatar 7:38pm
Kimzilla:

Were going to use immersion therapy on Emily and get her to sing a song during the marathon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
dale:

i don't think she would be dangerous, just destructive.
Avatar 7:38pm
Linda Lee:

good idea to stop feeding birds in spring, wait til the bears are asleep in December. that's when they need the food anyway.
Avatar 7:38pm
emily:

@cohost NOPE.
Avatar 7:39pm
kimzilla:

@IRL and Emily Stay tuned...
Avatar 7:41pm
Linda Lee:

with an animal that big, the line between destructive & dangerous can be pretty slim. in our area, a cabin compound had difficulty with bears getting into their dumpsters. they made a mess. usually they were after the dirty diapers. then a community member left her infant outside near the dumpster. possibly in dirty diapers. she lost her child.
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

horrifying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
dale:

was that up by woodstock 15 or so years ago?
Avatar 7:42pm
kimzilla:

@Linda Lee, great, James is never going in the woods again.
Avatar 7:42pm
Linda Lee:

just tell him not to wear diapers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
dale:

i have to be sure to change mine now.
  7:43pm
JakeGould:

When can’t get to sleep, I have the fear of not going to sleep and then I don’t go to sleep and then that’s that!
Avatar 7:43pm
kimzilla and emily:

hahahahahahaha
Avatar 7:43pm
Linda Lee:

no, this was down in Sullivan County a few years back.
Avatar 7:45pm
Linda Lee:

wait a while ... i checked. yes, about 15 years ago! time flies ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I came across a bear while hiking in Montana. After it bounded away, I stood for several minutes with the blood pounding in my ears. My fault for not making noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
dale:

i knew about that event. somewhere off route 28 a bit north of kingston.
Avatar 7:48pm
Linda Lee:

could we be talking about 2 separate incidents? i'm thinking down near Fallsburg, Sullivan County.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
dale:

oh.
  7:51pm
James:

That's a brutal story. Ken, I would be the exact same way, frozen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
dale:

what if the bear has a collar, tie and porkpie hat on? should you fear your pick-in-ick basket?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

A friend of mine near Cairo, Green County, NY, told me stories of bears vs. dirty diapers and birdseed.
  7:52pm
James:

Emily, the Oompa Loompa probably scared the bejesus out of you when you were little. You got hardwired!
Avatar 7:52pm
Linda Lee:

information helps you avoid a fearful situation. secure your trash, less of a chance you'll have bear problems. if you're seeing Yogi Bear in the wild you're probably on shrooms.
  7:53pm
JakeGould:

What about a bear on a plane being flown by a clown?
Avatar 7:53pm
Linda Lee:

wow Jake what? :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
dale:

all you douchebags in blessed rockland county.....
  7:59pm
James:
