Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm JtotheK:

hello everyone.
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

Hello Scraps and hyde! I dig your phancy surname, Scraps. Hyde, don't go! Maddoug Schulking, hello! Hello Jason - definitely some tracks in this set you might dig
Avatar 10:06pm Flash Strap:

oh my god i've never heard this Kenyon Hopkins
Avatar 10:09pm Little Danny:

@Flash: "Outer Islands" is unfortunately the only real winner from that LP
  10:10pm MrFab:

Yo Flamers! Yeah, those Sound Tour albums mix field recordings/sound fx with music of the respective country. I have the Italy one.
  10:12pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Hi Danny & Listeners, wow this Santo & Johnny-esque intstro by Kaiwaza Wild is great, reminds me a lot of forgotten 60's Aussie Lap Steel star Robbie Porter, who had a hit down he here in 63 or so "55 Days at Peeking
Avatar 10:12pm Little Danny:

Good evening MrF, thanks for being here! I think the Hawaii edition is the only Sound Tour LP I have. How is the Italy LP?
Avatar 10:13pm Flash Strap:

I'm disappointed to hear that, but I believe it. "Hawaiian Dream" was worthy of a backflip, btw
  10:13pm Doctorjazz:

Great sounds... going to have to call it a night as well, catch you in the archives..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Scraps:

I stole my phancy surname from Flann O'Brien, a writer worth many thefts from.
Avatar 10:14pm hyde:

nothing makes me feel so guilty for going to sleep like The Cool Blue Flame! ;)
Avatar 10:14pm Little Danny:

Noooooo don't go Doctorjazz!
  10:14pm MrFab:

"Sound Tour: Italy" is interesting as an audio postcard, but not something I reach for too often.
Avatar 10:14pm Little Danny:

Hello Pete my friend. I'ma look into that Porter title you mention
Avatar 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

hello Danny and all
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

@Pete guitarist on this Willis Jackson is "Pat Azzara" - does that ring any bells with you?
  10:16pm Doctorjazz:

hard to leave this set, have to say...
Avatar 10:16pm Flash Strap:

Danny you're on fire
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

Hi Coel! The party can now swing!
Avatar 10:18pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash, I blush
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

this is beautiful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm JtotheK:

never heard this troy dodds, it's excellent!
Avatar 10:21pm hyde:

ok, that's it for me. good night, friends.
Avatar 10:21pm Little Danny:

Thanks y'all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm JtotheK:

g'night hyde!
Avatar 10:22pm Little Danny:

What kind of music/mood is everyone in the mood for? For once I have some options on where I can go next
Avatar 10:22pm coelacanth∅:

boa noite hyde
Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

g'night Hyde!
  10:23pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Your call on the programming Danny, but mo Willis Jackson, if possible.
Danny Robbie Porter became a very successful music excec, down here in the 70's, '55 Days at Peeking' was a big hit, but not typical of his style, most of his other stuff was Hawaiian style Lap Steel instros, square, but cool!

Nice stuff BTW, loved the Willis Jackson, his late 50's through late 60's output is fantastic, think I got all his LP's from that period, all rule! Great bands, McDuff, Pat Martino, Bill Jennings etc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Scraps:

I'm happy to have you steer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Scraps:

I probably would run us on the rocks
Avatar 10:28pm Little Danny:

I'm sure you would steer us true and clear, Scraps
  10:28pm MrFab:

Dark evil latin/exotica. Just to see what you'll come up with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm JtotheK:

this program is always educational. for example, my internet research for the inell young 45 turned up a credit to eddie bo. b/w that darling dears is so great, the drums on both sides are fantastic!
  10:30pm MrFab:

Or how 'bout: what do you think Poison ivy Rorschach is listening to right now?
Avatar 10:41pm Little Danny:

Oh, man, I forgot to mention that Inell Young was an Eddie Bo production - seems like an important thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Scraps:

I only find on the Sound Tour thing additional Tours of Spain and France (also by Hopkins)
Avatar 10:42pm Little Danny:

@MrF: I remember Poison Ivy mentioned her love of dreamy doowop in one of those ISM volumes
Avatar 10:43pm Little Danny:

From memory that sounds right, Scraps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Scraps:

Too bad, it seems like a good idea
Avatar 10:44pm Little Danny:

This Torres goes out to you MrF
  10:47pm MrFab:

Gracias! Am mambo-ing in my office chair.
Avatar 10:48pm Little Danny:

Maybe not quite as evil as you'd wanted but still plenty dark and stormy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Scraps:

Hey, interesting piece on Sound Tours. Apparently they were done by Esquire magazine:

Avatar 10:50pm Little Danny:

Oh yea that's right! And thanks for the link, scraps!
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

This Billy Paul is so damn intense
Avatar 10:56pm Little Danny:

@Scraps: it's nice that that allaboutjazz write-up didn't totally pan the Kenyon Hopkins LPs, which are decidedly easy listening and a soft target
  11:01pm MrFab:

This song is like: Hello, Mose Allison, we salute you!
Avatar 11:03pm Little Danny:

Totally! I even meant to play it with a Mose track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm doctorjazz:

still here (I'll be sorry in the morning...), love this Timmons.
Avatar 11:05pm Kris Holmes:

Bobby Timmons one of my fave jazz pianists
Avatar 11:06pm Little Danny:

doctorjazz: So happy you're still here! Yeah, the Timmons is a stone classic. Anything I can play for you?
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

Hi Kris! Yeah, me too re: Timmons
Avatar 11:07pm Kris Holmes:

ah, i missed the Inell & Darling Dears, two big Kris Holmes spins ;-)
Avatar 11:09pm Kris Holmes:

also that Margie Joseph is outstanding, love that 45, Willie Tee wrote it.
Avatar 11:10pm Little Danny:

@Kris, yes and yes! To my knowledge Joseph never recorded anything else that sounded like that side. Right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm doctorjazz:

Thanks Little Danny, happy listening to what you're spinning (I can play stuff I know any time, FMU let's me hear different stuff in a different way, stuff I may not know). Enjoying the sounds!
Avatar 11:17pm Kris Holmes:

Dan, you don't have the one immediately before it on Volt? Also Willie Tee & also outstanding it's called "Nobody" the flip is a great Bobby Womack track called "What You Gonna Do". Those two 45s, are her first two on Volt & the only two cut in NOLA & are the two to have.
  11:19pm Edwina:

Some fine tunes happening. Thanks, deejay!
Avatar 11:21pm Little Danny:

Don't know that one Kris - "One More Chance" is the only thing I know by her. Thanks for the tip
Avatar 11:21pm Little Danny:

Thank YOU Edwina! I try!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm JtotheK:

excellent show Danny, i'll have to catch the rest via the archive -- thanks so much! good night everyone!
  11:22pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Love that Rene Hall Orch 45!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm doctorjazz:

This is down and dirty. (Voodoo Moon)
Avatar 11:26pm Kris Holmes:

Rev Charlie jackson!! Where's Lore to thank for bringing these records into out lives :) !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm doctorjazz:

Getting downer and dirtier...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm doctorjazz:

Even if he's a Reverend
Avatar 11:27pm Little Danny:

Down, dirty, sanctified
  11:28pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Since we all need some up lifting stuff in these scary times (not that the tunes your playing arent uplifting!) but was going to suggest a couple of Spiritual Jazz tunes.
Jazz violinist Michael White's, The Blessing Song from Pneuma LP 1972 on Impulse &
Doug Carns & Jean Carns on vocals, Little B's Poem 1971 on Black Jazz

Dig that Rev Jackson cut Stand by Me, killer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Scraps:

Avatar 11:30pm Little Danny:

Kris: Adam pops in from time to time on this show
Avatar 11:30pm Little Danny:

Thanks for the suggestions, Pete! I'll see what I can do...
Avatar 11:32pm Kris Holmes:

he was the witness to the infamous "I overheard you're from New Zealand, I hear Amsterdam is a beautiful city & I'd love to go to the Utrecht Record Fair too" encounter when we were at the WFMU record fair in 2015 lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Scraps:

my dad is at emergency room for the fourth time in two weeks (cancer treatment, can't stop bleeding). if i suddenly drop from GTD for a week or three that's probably why
Avatar 11:36pm Little Danny:

Oh shit Scraps, I'm so sorry to hear that. That must be hella stressful!
Avatar 11:37pm Little Danny:

I appreciate you being here under the circumstances, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm doctorjazz:

Best of luck, Scraps!
Avatar 11:37pm Little Danny:

Anything I can send out to your dad, musically?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Scraps:

Hm, that's interesting.... will think about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Scraps:

(I'm here because I can't drive.....)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Scraps:

Music and music-fans are a balm... thanks
Avatar 11:44pm Little Danny:

amen to that!
  11:45pm MrFab:

Best wishes Scraps. Hey, remissions happen. You can never tell with that nutty Big C.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Scraps:

Yep. So far my dad is fighting. Must of been at least five years.

I know that it can change rapidly. My wife died two years ago. She was diagnosed less than six weeks before she died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Scraps:

Sorry. Go back to music! It's better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Love and best wishes to you and your father, Scraps.
  11:56pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Thanks again for another fantastic show Danny, night all, and Scraps: all best wishes for your Dad as well
Avatar 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny. have a good night.
- good luck to you Scraps.
  11:59pm MrFab:
