Hi David! I thought I was listening to the GTDR stream and was delighted to find that the Sesame St. subway song is your intro music.

That Ros Serey Sothea was great. I never tire of hearing her on this station.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
doctorjazz:

Hi, sounding good on my end.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Stanley:

Bejeesus this sounds like an Inuit/Malian collaboration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
David D:

Thanks and welcome doctorjazz!
Avatar 4:41pm
geezerette:

Howdy! What are shower potatoes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
David D:

Hi geezerette! Great question, I think the name derived from a play on words, I'll have to look for the explanation again...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
David D:

And here it is... keepswinging.blogspot.de...

Doug Schulkind:

This subway is swinging!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
David D:

That's something I enjoy a great deal about this stream and of course WFMU in general, all the different ways to appreciate music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Doug Schulkind:

Just got home from my Research class and my head is swinging. The one thing I am prepared to confirm: Continental Subway is reliable and valid. Or, as the non-experts call it, groovy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
David D:

Thanks for that, Doug - just gotta keep that train in the grooves...
Avatar 5:34pm
still b/p:

"The apples of my showers.." I hear Tony Bennett singing that to the tune of The Shadow Of Your Smile.
Avatar 5:40pm
geezerette:

@David D.:Thanks!

Discovered potatoes are earth apples, apples from the soil.
Love stories about naming.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
doctorjazz:

In Hebrew, a potato is "pree h'adama", fruit of the ground; an apple is "pree h'etz", fruit of the tree.
Digging the Yiddish, (Yiddish ska, no less!) came from a Yiddish speaking family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
David D:

There are some German dialects that call potatoes Erdäpfel as well, or the like, but I rarely hear that around here.
Avatar 5:43pm
geezerette:

@still b/p: ha ha ha! It would sell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
Parq:

The topic du jour is potato, is it?
www.newyorker.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
David D:

One more time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm
David D:

Hey Parq!
Avatar 5:50pm
geezerette:

@docjazz & David D.: Makes sense to make distinction. "You can eat them right off the tree, but if you have to dig them up you'll have to make a fire."
@Parq:Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
David D:

Oranges are also called pomeranc and the like in some languages, meaning "orange apple".
Avatar 6:06pm
geezerette:

Makes sense. Like Bradbury's "Golden Apples of the Sun".

Great music you're playing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Parq:

I think it was originally "short-lyved", but everybody nowadays say "short-livvd")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
David D:

Interesting, I think I was actually looking for fast-paced and came up short.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
David D:

Glad you're enjoying it, geezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
melinda:

@Parq: I think you're right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Doug Schulkind:

The possessive apostrophes in Latin rock band names is outta contol!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
Parq:

I think most of us learned the expression from reading it, rather than hearing it. The opposite happened to the expression "spit and image", which via hearing it pronounced by people who mumbled the "and", became "spitting image".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
David D:

Yes, I actually just put it back in - because that's thei'r nam'e!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Parq:

People said "spit 'n' image" and we all heard "spittin' image".
Avatar 6:25pm
still b/p:

And like another smushencoupler: "intensive purposes."
Mondegreens and eggcorns.
Avatar 6:30pm
geezerette:

ska-twist!

Richard and Linda!!!
