was Alice Coltrane ever Muslim? For all I know her sole conversion was to a follower of guru Sathya Sai Baba (which Satchidananda and all that other stuff from that period makes reference to/is about). Was she Muslim before that?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My understanding is the word 'Islam' means literally 'surrender'. That can be like the Dervishes in spiritual ecstasy - but there is also an element of strict honor code & conduct. As far as so many Jazz Artists converting to Islam - what I always heard was - it was a Non-Christian conformist way of both establishing an identity outside of consensus White America & embracing a Spirituality - & - a Code to focus on to get them out of Addiction & other destructive behaviors - in that whole period when everybody thot the way to becoming Bird was to be a Junkie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Jeff Golick:

It's a good question, @Flash. If she was, and I'm not really sure about it, it would've been back around her Alice McLeod days.

*John* Coltrane said he couldn't pick a religion - because if one was right, it made all the others wrong - & that actually made him angry!
