Passaic River Blues:

RIP, indeed. Axelrod was a goddamned genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
JtotheK:

Hi Duane. Thanks for spinning Axelrod tunes today. I have been digging out various LPs he worked on to play around the house. Also his interview in Wax Poetics (spanning 2 issues!) was pretty great, will be re-reading.

Christian:

AXE, he kept it raw from the first day

good afternoon duane and others.

Little Danny:

Hi Duane and all. Axelrod is the greatest, his two "Songs of" LPs are desert island discs for me
Avatar 12:10pm
kwhitehead:

I could think of no one else to do proper justice to the legacy of Mr. Aexlrod than Duane. Bring it on, sir.
Avatar 12:11pm
kwhitehead:

erm , "Axelrod". Sorry about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
JtotheK:

Hi Danny! Both "Songs Of" are fantastic. I also really like 'Earth Rot'. I've never found a copy of 'Seriously Deep', so that one I'm not familiar with.

The breadth of David Axelrod's career is amazing. I hope you'll visit some of his work with Beach Blanket Bingo singer Donna Loren, just for fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
JtotheK:

*Note to self: give a listen to The Four King Cousins 'Introducing' ... been a while since I've listened to that LP.*

Thank you for taking us on a trip to the AXE! RIP David Axelrod. Not too familiar with his output but I know some of his classics.
Avatar 12:16pm
PKNY:

Going clicky-star crazy for the all of the classic Axelrod productions so far, and I don't see that stopping!
Avatar 12:16pm

@pkny - SAME.
Avatar 12:17pm
βrian:

Not me. Just enjoying the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
JtotheK:

@ChrisB -- regarding Donna Loren - her Axelrod-produced 45 '90 Day Guarantee' is a good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Little Danny:

Even as a huge Axelrod devotee it's crazy how many productions of his I still keep hearing. Duane played something by Pride recently and it kinda floored me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
ChrisB.:

@Jto: Oh yes! That's on her Complete Capitol Recordings comp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Little Danny:

Goes without saying but epic set so far Duane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Passaic River Blues:

His boundless vision is what always stunned me: beautiful but never gratuitous string arrangements, jazz approach to highlight individual parts to cohere into a whole, respect for expressive & full percussion, similar respect to the bassist as more than the plodding tertiary aspect of the rhythm section, I guess his respect for each musician (studio guys/hip rock dudes/vocalists), avoiding kitsch & melding rock-jazz-soul-cinematic soundscapes into something organic & unique, ability to shift from studio to live situations, and a readiness and enthusiasm for unusual subject matter, styles, players.
Avatar 12:31pm

Hey Duane, these sounds truly dazzle

David Axelrod was in a league of his own. Great show, thank you, Duane.
Avatar 12:44pm
KRYPT:

Hi Duane, Thanx for all the Axelrod he is so all over my entire music collection, he was a one of a kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Gaylord Fields:

@JtotheK: The Four King Cousins LP, as excellent as it is, is not an Axelrod production. That was done by Lex de Azevedo, who some took as a pseudonym of Axelrod but is his own man (and a member of the King Family himself).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Little Danny:

One o' my fave Axelrod obscurities is a '64 Capitol 45 by the Vulcanes; "Moon Probe" is a surf-y guitar instro but with a majestic arrangement and sense of physical space like only Axe could do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Gaylord Fields:

And we haven't even visited Mister Lou Rawls yet!
  12:51pm

my favorite track by Letta Mbulu is "mahalela" - was that Axelrod too? off the album "Letta"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
JtotheK:

@GaylordFields -- re: Four King Cousins - wow, thanks for correcting! As you mentioned - I had read/heard it was produced by him under a pseudonym.
Avatar 1:30pm
Duane:

Good one bob! That track was actually produced by Hugh Masekela..no small slouch either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm

Great album bobdoesthings but that wasn't an Axelrod thing

Either that or Paint Your Wagon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Gaylord Fields:

@JtotheK: An understandable misconception, considering the name and production similarities of the two Capitol producers. I'm sure de Azevedo was paying close attention to what his cohort Axe was doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
