Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Chop Scott:

@Gaylord what about Kirshner's son?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Chop Scott: He's a fine producer in his own right and probably contains 100% human DNA.
  10:25pm
looking stuff up:

In 1961 I [Lee Irwin] produced "The Idol," a documentary about teen idol Bobby Vee that became part of Desilu Sales' "Windows on the World" syndicated series. Bobby himself was still a teenager himself at the time, just 18, but had already recorded a string of hit records and albums, most of them written by the husband-and-wife team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. They included "Take Good Care of My Baby," "Run to Him," and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes." Here [YT] is the closing five minutes of the documentary, which includes the title song, written by King and Goffin. IT ["The Idol"] WAS NEVER RELEASED ON RECORD.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How alone does Carole King stand in successfully spanning eras as a Writer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Hoboken Jack:

My sister and I had a semi flexi disc of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" cut out from the back of a... Super Sugar Crisp box i believe?
  10:32pm
Tommy Jack Haynes:

That could have been a line in the song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: If you were to say that Carole King stands along as a songwriter without any further qualifiers whatsoever, I wouldn't argue with that assessment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Gaylord Fields:

*stands alone
  10:33pm
Flakes:

"Monkee Mike Nesmith supposedly made Carole King cry when he made fun of her early songs to her face."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...as she stands along...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Flakes: You mean crappy crap song crap like "Will You Love Me Tomorrow"? Methinks Papa Nez's wool hat dye may have seeped into his brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Tommy in Neversink:

Carole should have made fun of white out as retaliation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@Hoboken Jack - I remember flexi discs from cereal boxes from way back. I don't recall what song or songs we had or what cereal brand had them, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Chop Scott:

Gaylord please don't disparage Nesmith, we could have conflict ahead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Chop Scott: If Mike said that about Carole King's songwriting, then he's got a bigger problem than you or I will ever have.
  10:39pm
Marc15:

@Gaylord I see your point
Avatar 10:42pm
Joe B:

Nez probably did deserve a co-writing credit for coming up with the guitar riff for Pleasant Valley Sunday. important part of the record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

I like Carole singing Pleasant Valley Sunday.

Avatar 10:51pm
Joe B:

Flakes re I don't think you know me - All 4 Monkees sang versions! The Jones one has yet to surface but to was recorded. I prefer the Peter version, and his performance of it at the Beacon Theater Monkees show in 2011 remains an all-time concert highlight for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Someone said - ? - that 'Goin' Back' was one of the turning points between the bYRdS & Crosby? (...more mess...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Hoboken Jack:

For what it's worth, here's a Nesmith quote to the Asbury Park Press in 2014:
"At the time, Carole King asked if I would like to write with her, but I was so intimidated by the idea of a pop song, and so naive as to the process, I turned down that opportunity. I loved CK's work then, and still do, but it couldn't have been any other way. I was clueless."
  10:53pm
Slaboch:

Perfect soundtrack for driving home through Harbor Country!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Gaylord Fields:

Ira, this is all fake fighting on my part — truth be told, I can't abide either the Monkees or Carole King.
  Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Ira:

It's fake chastising from me too. Personally, WFMU doesn't do all that much for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
