Bethany Ryker:

Has anyone else had this experience where you are speaking with a colleague about how palpable the chaos is in the world right now, and you go through the stages of saying things like "It's all going to be OK" then shaking your head in disbelief, and finding the very last thing to say: that we can't predict the future...and during this interval of global contemplation you realized you only had 15 seconds left to queue your music up for your radio show? Or is is just me?

I don't feel like getting into heated discussions or arguments with people, so I generally just smile and nod. I try to not let it angry up the blood.

No heated conversations here either, just empathy and the attempt to connect human-to-human.

His music lacked sharp changes in style over time. (Persichetti once said in an interview in Musical Quarterly that his music was "...not like a woman, that is, it does not have periods!") '...

human-to-human is the only way we'll manage it. there's no other way.

Seems characteristic of the situation (both specifically the News this minute - to Terence McKenna-variety generalities) - that Ideology is completely @ odds w/ Humanity. Doesn't it? Anthropologically - that's Insane - isn't it?

Listener Robert:

No, Bethany (re opening comment line remark), actually for a good no. of yrs. now my experience has been the opposite. My friends, WHO DISAGREE WITH EACH OTHER politically, seem to AGREE INDEPENDENTLY of each other that the world is falling apart. My opinion is, no, things are about the same as they've always (and I mean "always" close to literally -- probably since before hx, maybe even before human beings existed) been.

Anyone else notice the Flash (pop-up) stream behaving differently now, buffering content instead of syncing to the stream live?

Listener Robert:

I'm even entertaining the possibility that the chaos preceded the material universe, i.e. that it was inherent in the immanent spirit.

@LRobert: I think our species has inherent challenges to overcome - which is nothing new for us in our few millions of years - but our success as the communicating monkey w/ complex societies, abstracted thinking, & opposable thumbs that Uses Everything on this planet has also apparently brought us to critical junctures regarding Sustainability - & Purpose. I am not sure how much acknowledging that we are natural children this Universe has created helps us to Evolve rather than Devolve. In any evolution - an adaptation can become a maladaptation - when the circumstances to deal w/ to Survive have changed. It's been noted that Chaos Theory is really a misnomer - & it's actually 'Disorderly Order'. That is - if we wish to understand & be in harmony w/ the Universe - as it actually is - we need to develop somewhat different ideas about what 'Order' & 'Chaos' mean - & how we relate to The World - in our minds & in our actions...& I think that's the evolution that is necessary for our survival (& no less).

I agree with you, Robert - my very brief, very scattered comment at the top of the show was really just to get a hall pass for hanging outside the classroom without having my homework ready to turn in. Which here at the station means getting a tricky combo of buttons, lights and faders all in harmony.

Linda Lee - it's not too late, just tell me where to send it and we'll get a heart sticker-covered postcard up to you in the mountains!

@BethanyRyker: It did! Thank you!

Who’s the Pook?
Avatar 8:50pm
Bethany Ryker:

Looks like 2011; I'm putting a link on the playlist entry. Jocelyn Pook, British composer, mostly film music - this piece was for a dance company

there was a Jocelyn Pook piece made entirely of answering machine greetings that John Schaeffer used to play on New Sounds all the time but I could never find a recording of it. I'm gonna go look again!
