Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Frank Above:

I wonder if this song was the influence for one of the main motifs in "Tommy"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Gaylord Fields:

That is actually the same backing track on the Peppermint Rainbow version as used on the Lemon Pipers' hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Listener Baby:

Maybe different backing track take? Same day for sure. Too on this this to do it two separate times?
  12:09pm Cal Zone!:

This sounds like the same backing track as the Lemon Pipers but with different vox. Same BT was also used on the Lennon Sisters version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Frank Above:

I guess that little progression is in "Johnny Thunder" by The Kinks as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Gaylord Fields:

The two groups shared a producer, Paul Leka — he wiped the vocals off the original and had the new vocals dubbed onto the track.
  12:12pm lloyd michigan:

I'd rather hear George Jones sing this.
  12:12pm ?:

@lloyd: Hear you brother. I do the SwagForLife automatic monthly absolute minimum - just so I can even show my face. I always think people should consider that going small amounts monthly is easier, & gives FMU a steady drip feed too - tho' it's not the party of the Marathon madness & bidding on goodies &tc. ...Big Respect Always to the *real* pledgers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Gaylord Fields:

Not an unprecedented practice at the time: cf. "Psychotic Reaction," by the Count Five and Brenton Wood, respectively, as just one example. Or the various early-Sixties artists on Scepter/Wand who all sang over the same Luther Dixon backing tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Didn't that happen to 'Eve of Destruction' too? Denny of M&P's ?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Gaylord Fields:

Great idea! Familiar backing, unfamiliar vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Greg from ZONE 5:

This track is totally derivative of Fayelord '66.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Listener Baby:

Baby.. Was that a different version of that Latin number? I'd swear it was??
Avatar 12:22pm Michael Shelley:

That guy recorded that song at least 4 times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@Greg from ZONE 5: They'll find out soon enough, especially if they pledge. (And "Crickets" is a good choice for future F66 repertoire.)
Avatar 12:25pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Michael Shelley: You wrote The Hipster Handbook!
Avatar 12:26pm Juke Joint Jonny:

That was some Shade-o-phonic
  12:26pm Clarke:

actually - MS i enjoyed La La Land - although i almost walked out in the opening fanfare number - it is actually okay

Lion is a foreign movie?

'It's like middle school.' Dingdingding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Melissa Jean:

I think I like Amy Adams - loved her performance in "Arrival". But - if you've seen "Interstellar", they are weirdly comparable. Made "Arrival" seem like less of an achievement fer me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Melissa Jean:

re: "La La Land" - all I know is - like, "Hamilton", NPR mentions it a lot
  12:29pm Clarke:

i can see MS enjoying La La Land because it is pretty reverent as far as L.A. locations etc. and (most of) the songs are actually okay - just not the opening dance mob b.s.
Avatar 12:29pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Lot of yellow and green today. And some blues. Was the red Bad Blood?
  12:30pm Clarke:

i am NOT saying, by any means, that it is oscar worthy - but neither are any of the others
  12:30pm Cal Zone!:

For your consideration. The Lennon Sisters - Green Tambourine https://youtu.be/4aXl4UWQ0Tg
  12:31pm Clarke:

Fences is really good - but is basically a play that is filmed. sorry!
  12:34pm Clarke:

what's up with the Mike Shell logo on the superhits video title page??
  12:35pm Clarke:

The Marmalade!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Listener Baby:

Funny thing, you've played songs by Marmalade in your show before?? This was their big one.
  12:37pm DG:

Saw "Fences" last night and yeah....you can tell it was a play. It was well-done (as were the performances) but it's very talky & isn't "opened up" that much. August Wilson actually wrote the screenplay years ago (he died in '05) but it didn't get filmed until now (he insisted on an African-American director & I guess Denzel had enough clout to get it done). I'm mixed on "La La Land"---the last 40 or so minutes are great but it's a little clunky until then. Great score but I still think they sort of miscast it---and Emma Stone should really eat something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Listener Baby:

  12:40pm Clarke:

ha ha, well, La La is just tender enough with some flaws, and i think denzel was really good - it just doesn't take it further than the play. i can appreciate that, but a film needs to be something more, for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Listener Baby:

I can't get myself to watch ANY movie anymore. And I don't know why??
  12:41pm Clarke:

i hear ya baby
  12:42pm Clarke:

Wow. Never knew more than 20% of the words to Benny and the Jets. Thank you for this public service!
  12:42pm Clarke:

have u, for instance seen The Revenant?? that is/was oscar worthy!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Listener Baby:

same. I can't explain it. I watch a crazy Wizard of Oz movie the other day with my kid. An 80's sequel. I'm good for about two years now.
