Saw "Fences" last night and yeah....you can tell it was a play. It was well-done (as were the performances) but it's very talky & isn't "opened up" that much. August Wilson actually wrote the screenplay years ago (he died in '05) but it didn't get filmed until now (he insisted on an African-American director & I guess Denzel had enough clout to get it done). I'm mixed on "La La Land"---the last 40 or so minutes are great but it's a little clunky until then. Great score but I still think they sort of miscast it---and Emma Stone should really eat something.

ha ha, well, La La is just tender enough with some flaws, and i think denzel was really good - it just doesn't take it further than the play. i can appreciate that, but a film needs to be something more, for me.
