My first cassette player had a stick shift, we used to goof around with it just like this (with less talent, of course) s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...
Avatar 12:16pm

Yes, I had something like that too!

Hi Tony!
Cool those TEAC-cassettes with miniature reels.
Seen them but never had one.
Avatar 12:22pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Guido!
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

So, just to clarify something I said in my intro: while the Rascal Reporters were around in the '70s, they were teenagers. Their first release (a cassette) wasn't until 1980.
Avatar 12:26pm
Tony Coulter:

I believe the tape on now is pre-Rascal Reporters, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Fleep - I had a stick-shift portable Craig 212 with 3" reels... one of those blew up nearly every week on Mission Impossible! That stick needed constant tightening!

Tony Coulter:

Greets, Webham!!

As you heard, this side of the tape is a comp of earlier tapes -- I believe some go back to when Gore was 13 or so.

Avatar 1:23pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I definitely feel honored to be the custodian of all these tapes. There are still quite a few I haven't heard, as there are around 100 of 'em.
Avatar 1:24pm
Tony Coulter:

At some point, I may try to release the best of the best (if I can get permission to do that, that is).
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

I feel like I should recognize the song on now -- but I don't. Is it Bread?
Avatar 1:25pm
Cecile:

this is Bread right now
Avatar 1:25pm
Cecile:

this is a creepy Bread song.
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks for confirming, Cecile!
Avatar 1:26pm
Carmichael:

Yes, a David Gates uber love song ...
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

This is obviously Morricone....
Avatar 1:29pm
Tony Coulter:

... tho I forget which track. I'm not good at remembering titles.
Avatar 1:30pm
northguineahills:

Too bad I took off my Shazam off my phone. (It never ID'ed anything I didn't already know, but I'm pretty sure it would have had Morricone).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Webhamster Henry:

I'd say! It's so Morricon-y!
Avatar 1:31pm
Tony Coulter:

This on now is Skeleton Crew (or possibly Fred Frith solo).
Avatar 1:31pm
Cecile:

Skeleton Crew. Cello on it.
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

I don't have Shazam, because I am the last living human being without a cellphone (and proud of it too).
Avatar 1:32pm
Cecile:

Also, I have this album. So great.
Avatar 1:32pm
Cecile:

Shazam never helped me find anything, so I took it off my ipod.
  1:32pm
Dean:

Frith played a local watering hole in my neighborhood just a couple weeks ago. I was all poised to go when I had to make an emergency trip to Southern California.

Cellphones are, plain and simple, shit.
Avatar 1:33pm
Cecile:

I have a crummy grandma burner phone from Consumer Cellular. Everything else is my iPad. If there's no Wi-Fi, that's fine with me.
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

I hate 'em. Had one for a while, if truth be told, but happily abandoned it.
Avatar 1:34pm
Cecile:

They are good for me, a non-driving woman, so my husband can pick me up, or at least not be worried when I'm out.
Avatar 1:36pm
Cecile:

The Skeleton Crew album I believe is called Learn to Talk.
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Think you're right. I have it, and recognized this track immediately -- I was just too lazy too confirm that's where it was from.
  1:38pm
Dean:

I am a devoted Luddite, and I don't see how anybody sane can't be otherwise. (The irony of being a regular listener from California to a program streamed across the 'net out of Portland, OR, via a station in New Jersey does not escape me.) To be clear: as a Luddite I am merely highly skeptical of the hyped promise of these devices and protocols. I am not anti-technology. Learning to program in 1976 was fascinating, as was running a network during the '90s.
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

This on now is the Rascal Reporters.
  1:39pm
Dean:

Er, *could be otherwise.
Avatar 1:39pm
Cecile:

Dean, I'm similar. Whatever happened to "appropriate technology"? Half the time a list on the back of an envelope is as good as any electronic planner.

Partial back announcing.....
Avatar 1:42pm
Tony Coulter:

This is the Rascal Reporters again.....
  1:42pm
Dean:

Heh, just now in my email inbox, a series of messages with the Subject, "Unscheduled Network Outage."

Exactly, Cecile. "Appropriate" entails a degree of objective value, not just subjective desire and satisfaction. Folks don't reflect on whether or not a tool is right for the job so much as whether or not "I like it!"
Avatar 1:42pm
Cecile:

Where did you say they were out of again?
Avatar 1:43pm
northguineahills:

My iPhone is 6 years old. I would still have at my Blackberry from 2004 if my wife hadn't given me her old iPhone and made me part from my old phone. I'll stay w/ this one until it dies (and, it's doing a great job of dying, already replaced the battery once, myself).
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: Oak Park, Michigan.
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

... which is a suburb of Detroit.
Avatar 1:44pm
Cecile:

It would be funny if they came to Ann Arbor and me or one of my friends would have sold them records. Yeah, I'm familiar with Oak Park. Ann Arbor's only about 45 minutes away.
Avatar 1:45pm
northguineahills:

"list on the back on envelope". Not if your penmanship is illegible to your own self. My teachers made me type my homework since I was in the third grade, and that was 1984.
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

OK, this is obviously Tom Jones: Little Red Book.
Avatar 1:46pm
Cecile:

NGH, I am getting my 2012 15" screen laptop repaired. they don't make them anymore, and once it craps out, they won't fix it anymore. So it better last for a while.
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm guessing this on now is also Morricone....
  1:48pm
Dean:

Funny, while Tom Jones sang the title tune in the soundtrack to "What's New Pussycat?," Manfred Mann sang "My Little Red Book."
Avatar 1:50pm
Tony Coulter:

Have no idea who this is now....
Avatar 1:50pm
Cecile:

Sounds like Dionne Warwick
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

That sounds right! Wuz just going to suggest that.
Avatar 1:54pm
Tony Coulter:

OK, I really have no idea what the track on now is.
  1:55pm
Dean:

Steve Lacy and Mal Waldron?
Avatar 1:56pm
Tony Coulter:

Doesn't sound like Lacy to me, but who knows. Almost sounds like Tony Coe??
Avatar 1:57pm
Tony Coulter:

This is the Rascal Reporters now
Avatar 1:57pm
Cecile:

I was gonna say Steve Lacy, or maybe someone on clairinet. Did Sidney Bechet ever make a boppy record?
  1:58pm
Dean:

Right, a little too showy for Lacy. I don't know where he played with piano/drums/bass/trumpet.
  1:59pm
JtotheK:

Gotta head out, but enjoyed the tapes - thanks Tony!
Avatar 1:59pm
Tony Coulter:

See ya, JtotheK!
Avatar 2:01pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks to Doug (Drummer Doug, natch), I know exactly what this track is: Pharoah Sanders: "Heart Is a Melody of Time."
  2:03pm
Dean:

Checking Coe's discography for pre-'85 recordings. Nothing obvious there...
Avatar 2:05pm
Tony Coulter:

This Pharoah Sanders track kinda reminds me of Magma.
Avatar 2:05pm
still b/p:

I believe Tony Middleton was the singer in the My Little Red Book version. I didn't know that offhand. But I thought Tom Jones...? Didn't sound like him. Middleton sings it on a Burt Bacharach Plays His Hits album from '66 or '69 depending on which dating you believe. Found it and gave a quick listen.
Avatar 2:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Aha! Thanks, still b/p!! If I ever air this tape again, I'll know exactly what's on it.
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Guess I could have figured it out first, but, no....
Avatar 2:09pm

Here's the Rascal Reporters again....

Oscar Wilde said, "Figuring it out first is the last refuge of the unimaginative DJ."
Avatar 2:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Don't know what this on now is either.....
  2:15pm
Dean:

This strings and guitar is DEFINITELY Steve Lacy.
Avatar 2:15pm
Cecile:

That last big band piece had a sound that reminded me a little of some of Henry Threadgill's units.
Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Also don't know what this is!
Avatar 2:16pm
Hams in Athens:

this is kind of interesting, not being able to report the playlist.
Avatar 2:17pm

Hiya, Hams! Yes -- personally, I kinda like the semi-mystery....
Avatar 2:17pm

nothing has been steve lacy imo, Dean!
Avatar 2:18pm

that last piece might be from a film like two for the road or something.

Avatar 2:20pm

this sounds like a cover.
  2:22pm
Dean:

...of a mid-period Chicago tune.
Avatar 2:22pm
Cecile:

or Steve lacy.
  2:23pm
Dean:

Yeah, Lacy was all about rhyming "Paris, France" with "romance."
Avatar 2:23pm

V Priceless:

good point, @ Cecile Re: ToddHuge
Avatar 2:35pm
Cecile:

I saw Todd open for Hall and Oates once. He was hilarious and bizarre. Half of the audience loved it, the other half was yelling "Play your hit!"
Avatar 2:36pm
Cecile:

Then at the end, they did a Philly soul medley, and Daryl had to point Todd to the teleprompter right under his feet. Good times.
Avatar 2:38pm
Tony Coulter:

As for why Rascal Reporters never got big, or even semi-big: I think their sound was just too diverse. A combination of Egg, the Residents, and Bread was probably just too weird for most people.
  2:38pm
Dean:

I saw Todd during the Back to the Bars tour at the Roxy. Maybe H&O were there, too?
Avatar 2:39pm

They could have been. They have been pals for years.

how did you discover the Rascal Reporters, Tony?
Avatar 2:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Forget now -- have been a fan for years.
Avatar 2:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Maybe I heard about them because Henry Cow and Univers Zero folks appear on one of their albums. I think that's what made me seek them out.
Avatar 2:51pm

About when was that?
Avatar 2:52pm

This record: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 2:52pm
