Welcome back, Micah! I'll have to leave in a bit, but I'll make an appointment for some long-overdue mind control via the archives at a later date.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm micah:

  3:11pm Cooh John:

Good to hear you again, micah.
Avatar 3:11pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Rich in Washington:

Weird. The stream's going but I am not hearing anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm maestroso:

Yeah, down here too.
Avatar 3:12pm PKNY:

@Cecile - I was thinking teh same thing. The stream is connected via iTunes and track names are changing, but no audio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Michael 98145:

yup, thought it was just paranoid me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Rob (Jerzcity):

I thought I was going crazy. Nothing on the stream for me, either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Patrick:

i was about to say the same thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm fleep:

No stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Rich in Washington:

It's streaming, info's showing up on my iTunes player, but no actual audio.

yeesh, Trouble is talking G. Harrison again--time warp!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Rich in Washington:

The drummer stream's working. I don't think it's server side. Maybe in the station or air room?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Summer and Michael:

Yeah, no audio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Rob (Jerzcity):

I was listening at work, but tried the app on my phone, too. Nothin' doin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Ike:

Silent stream here too, but 91.1 FM is fine. Weird.
  3:15pm mary:

yea, stream timing going but no audio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Rich in Washington:

the stream is carrying ID3 info just fine.
Avatar 3:17pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Ike: reminded me of some low-budget slasher film I saw in theater about 30+ years ago... silent scream (?) Some dude with knife in an A/C duct, or something? Can't empty the brain-cache! Not fair..
Avatar 3:17pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Rob (Jerzcity):

Ahhhhhh....there we go.
Avatar 3:18pm PKNY:

Audio is back on the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm maestroso:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Ike:

Different sounds at 91.1 FM than on the stream. Awesomely corny elevator music on 91.1. Must be a backup tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Summer and Michael:

Back up!
Avatar 3:22pm Sem Chumbo:

Good afternoon, Micah, and cultists, all.
How very good to hear you here once more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Kat in Chicago:

Micah! Well, this is a pleasant surprise. I've missed you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm fleep:

Just had a hit of mind control, ready to face the music.
Avatar 3:28pm Sem Chumbo:

What, that blowfish you've been huffing ALSO promotes mind control? Wow, that's sorta great, I guess.
  3:31pm Will:

the title of this track is actually 'Ispaniya', which is 'Spain' in Russian
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Polyus:

It's Micah! My Fridays have not been the same since you went away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Carmichael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm fleep:

Actually, my mind cannot be controlled. It has been returned to the shelter innumerable times. It keeps going off its leash and biting children. I fear I may have to put it down.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Uncle Michael:

It's great to be hearing you and the Music of Mind Control again, Micah. I could never make time to tell you how much I enjoy this when you were on mornings and I was starting my day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Carmichael:

The Santa Cruz County of the Southwest.
  4:14pm Mark:

Been listening to channels for several years. Pretty cool to hear someone mention this stuff on wfmu.
Avatar 4:15pm Cecile:

So is the guy still alive or dead?
Avatar 4:15pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Jackie:

Avatar 4:16pm geezerette:

This song is scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm micah:

hey uncle michael thanks so much for thee kind words
  4:16pm mto:

This is precisely why I love woofmoo. It brings the truly enlightened together....wow I'm baked...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Uncle Michael:

I'm unenlightened, but fascinated by TMOMC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm micah:

we are all unenlightened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm fleep:

The lady singing probably got a nice dopamine/serotonin rush while singing. For listener, it's iffy.
  4:19pm mto:

Now you get it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm chris:

hi, micah! thanks for the chakra alignment here, its nice
Avatar 4:20pm βrian:

Enlightened? I've lost 10 pounds already!
Avatar 4:22pm geezerette:

There's a building called "The Integreton" in the Mojave desert where they do "sound baths" using gong -like metal bowls. Literal vibrations, think they're referred to as "singing bowls". It's also extremely hot in there.
Avatar 4:24pm βrian:

What, no AC?
Avatar 4:24pm geezerette:

...one could become enlightened there, but it would be water weight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm fleep:

geezerette, no need to travel, we got a local bowl lady and central air www.latimes.com...
Avatar 4:25pm Cecile:

Children of God led to River Phoenix's suicide.
Avatar 4:25pm βrian:

The Christian culture has always bee full of sects.
Avatar 4:25pm Marshall Stacks:

I like that accent she put on in that connection creation track. "Cone-ection creation...."
Avatar 4:26pm Cecile:

Children of God led to River Phoenix's suicide.
Avatar 4:26pm Marshall Stacks:

@Cecile, wasn't the entire Phoenix family part of the CoG?
Avatar 4:26pm Cecile:

Whoops double post. Children of God are terrible.
  4:26pm Listener Robert:

Wow, so bad they grossed out Micah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Polyus:

It would be cool to see some hip reissue label put together a set of cult music and have Micah write the liner notes. Light In The Attic has already dug up private press new age stuff for a new audience, so this could be the next step.
Avatar 4:27pm Cecile:

Yes. River had to support his family at an early age. And when they left the CoG, it was definitely better for them, but the lack of community made things hard.
Avatar 4:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Micah could curate a great big Nuggets box of rilly crazy & evil mofos...Nuggets Vol. Aught...
Avatar 4:28pm geezerette:

Fleep, thanks! That's hilarious. You could go to a concert and get the same effect.
Avatar 4:28pm Cecile:

When you read about people who leave Scientology, polygamist cults, etc, they hate the strictures, but they miss the certainity of their lives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm micah:

yes polyus! make it happen please i dont know anybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm micah:

nuggets volume death
Avatar 4:29pm Marshall Stacks:

Don Lattin's book on the CoG is quite good. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm fleep:

getting clearances from cults to publish their music should be interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm micah:

so sue me
Avatar 4:32pm βrian:

Soon enough, I'll be going beer.
Avatar 4:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Negative Nuggets - Original Artyfacts from the !st Pschomanipulatin' Era...
Oh man - Jeezus Cult Disco - that's worse than that thing the Shut Up Weirdoes were gonna drink for Marathon...See -it makes sense *here*, cause FMU is a Cult...
Avatar 4:32pm geezerette:

Cecile, you really nailed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm micah:

yes rev rabbit
Avatar 4:35pm geezerette:

RevRab, "Negative Nuggets",brilliant !
Avatar 4:36pm Cecile:

geezerette, I'm not quite as thorough as Micah, but it is a sub-interest of mine. Especially Scientology. I'm kind of obsessed with Scientology dissenters.
Avatar 4:37pm βrian:

I guess FMU might be a kind of cargo cult, where ritualistic acts such as offering swag are believed to result in the appearance of lucre.

(To paraphrase the 'pedia.)
Avatar 4:37pm Cecile:

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Eckankar is skeevy.
  4:38pm Listener Robert:

Irwin was always playing one so-bad-it's-funny Eckancar recruiting song.
Avatar 4:38pm Cecile:

They had a big house in Ann Arbor. I knew some people who dabbled in it.
Avatar 4:39pm Marshall Stacks:

There's a stretch of highway near here (in CA) that says its garbage pickup is sponsored by Eck.
Avatar 4:39pm βrian:

@Cecile: I remember that! And their posters were *everywhere*
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

I think they and the Krishnas had big free dinners once a month where they recruited.
Avatar 4:40pm geezerette:

Yes, Scientology is insidious. They own a lot of real estate in LA.
We've known a number of people whose children have been alienaed from them by the "church".
  4:40pm sufferwords:

oh man oh man - this is why we support WFMU - where else will I hear such bugged out music - i like how you didn't even have to explain flirty fishing assuming correctly we all knew what was meant by that term- ROCK!!!!!
Avatar 4:41pm Cecile:

It tears your heart apart. Leah Remini's show really drives that point home.
  4:41pm bkd69:

there's a car dealer or mechanic on route 22 called Ekonkar which always reminds me of Eck.
Avatar 4:42pm geezerette:

Cecile, yes, it's brave of her.
Avatar 4:42pm Marshall Stacks:

Sadly, we'll never see a Slyder/Stryper double bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm micah:

thats right. flirty fishing is common knowledge isnt it?
Avatar 4:42pm Cecile:

I always thought, she's too good for them. And it turns out she was!
  4:43pm nardo:

do these guys have a manager? I see $$$
  4:43pm Brendan:

Speaking of cults, Sunday will be the 20th anniversary of the Heaven's Gate followers 'evacuation from planet Earth before it was to be recycled' . https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0-zPWBu--Q4
  4:43pm adrian in mpls:

There's a dinner theater in the same town as Eck's spiritual home out here - maybe some recruitment for this band happened there!
  4:45pm Listener Robert:

I give up, what's flirty fishing?
Avatar 4:45pm Marshall Stacks:

I can't think of a Scientological rock band, can you? Chick Corea and Isaac Hayes don't qualify....
Avatar 4:46pm βrian:

"Open channel!" Dear me.
Avatar 4:46pm Cecile:

CoG prostitution as recruiting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I will call my cult band Snyper, in case that ever happens.

Hello Micah! What a nice surprise to hear your show again.
Avatar 4:48pm ! I X Key !:

When I used to bh in the Church of Scientology, it made me sad to see all the people who were in whom that was happening to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Kat in Chicago:

Wonder how successful these fundraisers were. With the musical talent on display here, I've got my doubts.
  4:51pm Listener Robert:

I think Cecile already answered for me, thanks, Polyus. Last time like this was a few days ago when I needed to know what an upper decker was, led to trouble.
Avatar 4:51pm Cecile:

It's the most visible example, but I've seen religion tear apart families more than anything else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Michael 98145:

Speaking of cults, some folks still miss Stalin, too ...
Avatar 4:52pm βrian:

An upper decker? Wha?
  4:53pm Listener Robert:

Hey, that'd be a great beauty contest: Miss Stalin!
Avatar 4:53pm Cecile:

I'm staying out of this one.
Avatar 4:53pm Sem Chumbo:

Likewise. Huh? Upper...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm melinda:

Robert your comment about the upper decker is the funniest thing I've read today. I learned what it was from a John Waters movie, I can see how it might lead to trouble.
Avatar 4:54pm βrian:

Not many are missing Drumpf.
Avatar 4:54pm ! I X Key !:

Scientology is absolutely not a fucking religion at all in any sense of the word
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Carmichael:

What language is this lifespace thing? Speaking in tongues??
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

A lot of religions aren't when it comes down to it. The minute a charismatic leader runs the show like it's his/her own personal Sims game is the minute it goes off the rails.
  4:56pm Listener Robert:

What I didn't understand was the nature of the joke, i.e. that t was considered funny to have a notice on the toilet against them, implying that people there would do such a thing, because obviously such a notice wouldn't deter anyone nasty enough to do it. A friend had to explain that that was probably the joke on Bloomberg.
Avatar 4:56pm Cecile:

Avatar 4:56pm geezerette:

It's fascinating how incredibly similar the music is from cult to cult. There's a weird lethargy to much of it. Creepy.
  4:57pm Listener Robert:

I think I have a good sense of humor, & laugh at a lot of things, but that one went right by me until my friend Allison explained it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Michael 98145:

belief in the unbelievable. guess no one has ever explained to me the demarcation between religion and insanity.
Avatar 4:58pm MenfussMike:

I have been listening and buying contemporary music for about 40 years now. This has to be the most bizarre music program I Have ever heard.
Avatar 4:59pm Cecile:

that is saying something MM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Polyus:

Yeah, I have known the upper decker to be deployed as a housewarming party prank. So be careful about who you invite over to your new pad.
Avatar 4:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's like Burroughs said about addiction: it's the certainty in the freedom from moral indecision that a lot of people like about it. Freedom from choice is what you want...
Avatar 4:59pm Cecile:

If someone did that to me, they would be dead to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Michael 98145:

we are Devo
Avatar 5:00pm Marshall Stacks:

I prefer the teachings of the Archangel Lou:

When I put a spike into my vein
Then I tell you things aren't quite the same

When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm Carmichael:

We used to listen to the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack DAILY in grade school. Musically, this other stuff is not too far off.
Avatar 5:01pm Cecile:

Did this Susan Elsa have anything to do with Clare Prophet and those zanies?
Avatar 5:01pm ! I X Key !:

Mr Hubbard thoroughly how Scientology is a cult & not a religion. He explained how getting ethics in on the planet means destroying all religions. All of them. & Scientology isn't one of them. He made there be so much tech about how that the subject of Scientology is a religion is a trick to lure you into that cult. & then you're trapped in that criminal business that is an outer space paramilitary.
Avatar 5:02pm geezerette:

RevRab, that phrase is quoted in a song by Fear isn't it?
Avatar 5:02pm ! I X Key !:

I was in that paramilitary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm melinda:

@Cecile: me too. Since I've only encountered the practice in the fictional setting of A Dirty Shame, where someone confessed to being a serial upper decker at a sex fetish 12- step meeting, the term always cracks me up.
  5:02pm Listener Robert:

Polyus, I could see it being done as a house COOLING prank -- like if nobody you know's ever using that toilet again, because they're moving out.
Avatar 5:02pm Cecile:

Wow. That's the first time I heard that difference explained that clearly.
Avatar 5:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@geez: That's Devo.
Avatar 5:03pm Sem Chumbo:

Now I am thinking there is a growth industry in channeling the ascended spirits of musicians.
Avatar 5:04pm Cecile:

Micah, do you have any crazy Opus Dei stuff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm chris:

viva MoMC! awesome as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm micah:

opus dei. i donkt know if i know that one
Avatar 5:05pm geezerette:

Thanks RevRab, great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Devin B.:

That was great! Miss hearing you Friday mornings, Micah. Thanks!
Avatar 5:05pm Cecile:

that is the Catholic Church's secret lunatic fringe. And it's a cult.
  5:06pm Listener Robert:

It was my preliminary guess as to what meant that grossed Ken out. Then I realized it was Automated Ken -- boilerplate -- because he must have a Robert button. I managed to get tossed TWICE last weekend, for 2 entirely different reasons...I have soooo many paths I blunder into.
Avatar 5:06pm geezerette:

Micah, so glad I stumbled in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm micah:

oh right right. yea i havent found anything by them
  5:07pm Yvang:

I think Opus Dei is related to the Vatican
Avatar 5:07pm MenfussMike:

the original guitarist from The James Gang(not Joe Walsh) lost his mind and joined a cult and played for them.
  5:08pm Listener Robert:

Somehow I don't see Opus Dei as the popularly recruiting type. It's probably more like RAW wrote of the Illuminati: you don't know who they are until you discover you're one.
Avatar 5:08pm ! I X Key !:

The Jive Aces
Avatar 5:08pm Cecile:

Oh, not true. They do recruit.

Avatar 5:09pm ! I X Key !:

They're the Church of Scientology's special band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm common:

what's up micah, all?
Avatar 5:09pm ! I X Key !:

They have a band
  5:09pm Listener Robert:

And Opus Dei ain't gonna record nuthin'!
Avatar 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Didn't Peter Green stumble into some conclave in Germany - & have visions that Fleetwood Mac would become some huge insidious drug-infested successful commercial enterprise - ?? Which of course, it did...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm melinda:

Speaking of cults, I recently saw a good documentary called The Cult of JT LeRoy. The subject is not the sort of religious cult we associate with this show, but related, sort of.
Avatar 5:10pm Cecile:

it's a cult, it just has a veneer of religiousity about it, and powerful friends.
Avatar 5:11pm Cecile:

I'm also fascinated by the whole JT Leroy thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm melinda:

The bit I've read about Opus Dei sounds very culty.
Avatar 5:11pm ! I X Key !:

The Jive Aces aren't Scientologists; they just are the cult's bandho are totally inside of Scientology world just being a band for them & not having to be on course
Avatar 5:13pm Cecile:

Opus Dei still takes all your money, dictates your life, and forces you to ditch family and friends. Like in most cults, women are 2nd class citizens.
  5:13pm Listener Robert:

Wow, I'd no idea, Cecile, thanks! And I haven't even read more than about a chapter (while waiting to meet somebody in the library at the School for Professional Children) of "The DaVinci Code"; I read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" years ago so figured it'd be superfluous, although he does look like a good writer.
Avatar 5:14pm Cecile:

but like say, something like Amway, the money and respectability soften the weirdness. They're just "super religious". But if you try to leave...

And gave them a ton of money.

I have no problem with selflessness, mortification, whatever. But if you can't walk away from an organization without being blackballed or worse, then you have to think hard about that.

Yvang, it is.

Regarding Scientology, part of the early history involves a friendship between Hubbard and Jack Parsons of JPL. They were both followers of Aleister Crowley. Incredible stuff to read about. Parson's wife was the artist Cameron who appears in Kenneth Anger's "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" and "Night Tide" with the young Dennis Hopper. In the Hopper film she's a kind of witch and a sort of black rabbit version of Lewis Carroll's white rabbit.
