It would be cool to see some hip reissue label put together a set of cult music and have Micah write the liner notes. Light In The Attic has already dug up private press new age stuff for a new audience, so this could be the next step.
Avatar 4:27pm

Yes. River had to support his family at an early age. And when they left the CoG, it was definitely better for them, but the lack of community made things hard.

  4:56pm
Listener Robert:

What I didn't understand was the nature of the joke, i.e. that t was considered funny to have a notice on the toilet against them, implying that people there would do such a thing, because obviously such a notice wouldn't deter anyone nasty enough to do it. Mr Hubbard thoroughly how Scientology is a cult & not a religion. He explained how getting ethics in on the planet means destroying all religions. All of them. & Scientology isn't one of them. He made there be so much tech about how that the subject of Scientology is a religion is a trick to lure you into that cult. & then you're trapped in that criminal business that is an outer space paramilitary.

Didn't Peter Green stumble into some conclave in Germany - & have visions that Fleetwood Mac would become some huge insidious drug-infested successful commercial enterprise - ?? Which of course, it did...

Speaking of cults, I recently saw a good documentary called The Cult of JT LeRoy. The subject is not the sort of religious cult we associate with this show, but related, sort of.
Avatar 5:10pm
Cecile:

it's a cult, it just has a veneer of religiousity about it, and powerful friends.

Cecile:

I'm also fascinated by the whole JT Leroy thing.

The bit I've read about Opus Dei sounds very culty.

The Jive Aces aren't Scientologists; they just are the cult's bandho are totally inside of Scientology world just being a band for them & not having to be on course

Opus Dei still takes all your money, dictates your life, and forces you to ditch family and friends. Like in most cults, women are 2nd class citizens.

Listener Robert:

Wow, I'd no idea, Cecile, thanks! And I haven't even read more than about a chapter (while waiting to meet somebody in the library at the School for Professional Children) of "The DaVinci Code"; I read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" years ago so figured it'd be superfluous, although he does look like a good writer.

but like say, something like Amway, the money and respectability soften the weirdness. They're just "super religious". But if you try to leave...

And gave them a ton of money.

I have no problem with selflessness, mortification, whatever. But if you can't walk away from an organization without being blackballed or worse, then you have to think hard about that.

Yvang, it is.

Regarding Scientology, part of the early history involves a friendship between Hubbard and Jack Parsons of JPL. They were both followers of Aleister Crowley. Incredible stuff to read about. Parson's wife was the artist Cameron who appears in Kenneth Anger's "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" and "Night Tide" with the young Dennis Hopper. In the Hopper film she's a kind of witch and a sort of black rabbit version of Lewis Carroll's white rabbit.
