This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi Hyde! What in the what?
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

I'm ok, spent the whole day trying and failing to get my house back online then at the last moment booked it to a friend's house and set up and started broadcasting in a mad rush
Avatar 7:07pm hyde:

@Flash yikes. stressful.
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

also, I'm very generally pleased because I got to meet Roedelius last night
Avatar 7:08pm hyde:

@Flash holy heck

@Flash did you just see him on an NC street corner or what

hiya hyde! Digging the groooooooooooove.
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

he played a show in town, weirdly enough. he's so ancient now. we talked about Durch die Wuste, though he could barely understand me.
"that was my first solo album," he said, wistfully. "I know" I said. That was it, really, but it was nice. The show was cool, sort of too short but really interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Scraps:

ah yeah

wow, Roedelius! just... wow
Avatar 7:15pm geezerette:

Hey Scraps!
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Lineup on this session is Klaus Dinger, Michael Rother, and Florian Schneider. No Ralf! More Neu! than Kraftwerk in a lot of ways... Neu! formed just after this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Scraps:

hey geeeeeeezerette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm doctorjazz:

Hi all! Pretty pooped here (had tickets to see Wilco last night, which I gave up for various reasons, can't imagine what I'd feel like now if I DID go.
Great sounds!
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

i feel like every wfmu show i've listened to this week is really inspired. the goal got met and the shackles are off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Scraps:

haha road warrior! man that was awesome
Avatar 7:19pm geezerette:

He's in his eighties now! Great that he's still performing. You're lucky!
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! Glad to have you! I bet Wilco is jealous of me for once
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

He seems really old, but also really healthy, and surprisingly large. He's a small giant!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

This whole show is so crazy. Doesn't sound like Kraftwerk, even early Kraftwerk, and the guitar is so heavy it barely sounds like Rother.
Avatar 7:27pm hyde:

this sounds like helicopter music
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

for helicopters, by helicopters
  7:28pm JtotheK:

Hi Flash, hi Explorers. Tuned in while prepping dinner and enjoying the sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm 23 Wolves:

This music is killing! MOTORIN'!
Avatar 7:30pm geezerette:

From the U.K. Guardian, 7-7-2006: "Handy catch-all though it is, krautrock is more a geographical term than a musical one, because 1970s German rock came in so many forms: Neu!'s frictionless rhythms, Can's funky abandon, Kraftwerk's immaculate machine music. Quiet trailblazer Hans-Joachim Roedelius gravitates towards what long-time admirer and sometime collaborator Brian Eno dubbed "discreet music": pastoral mantras as clean and fluid as running water. If the term didn't already mean something else, you could call it trance. This handsome 31-track collection only brushes the surface of his impressively diverse work, spread over about 80 albums. Both of his essential groups are featured - the pensive ripple of Cluster, with Dieter Moebius, and the quirky energy of Harmonia, with Moebius and Neu!'s Michael Rother - as are tasters for his first project (1968's Human Being) and his latest (2005's Lunz). Throughout, there is the bewitching sound of a man humbly mapping out his own world."
Avatar 7:34pm Little Danny:

Oh I am looking forward to this show

Hi Flash! Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm doctorjazz:

I would NEVER have guessed Kraftwerk just listening!

(Flash, Wilco got NOTHING on you!)
Avatar 7:36pm Little Danny:

Have you heard "Live 1974" by Harmonia, Flash? Recently released, superb
Avatar 7:40pm hyde:

@LD hmmm that sounds good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm doctorjazz:

I would NEVER have guessed Kraftwerk just listening!

(Flash, Wilco got NOTHING on you!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm doctorjazz:

Oops, double post, sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm doctorjazz:

(what some folks won't do for attention! I really should get back to work, check in in a bit...)
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

Live '74 is amazing Danny! Some of my favorite stuff of theirs, really. They're even better live in a lot of ways! Nothing from that one tonight, but I do have a track coming up from Documents 1975, which is Harmonia live in their studio in Forst
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

Seriously, Doc, it sounds so little like them, even their early stuff
Avatar 7:44pm Little Danny:

Oh, awesome - don't know Documents 1975!
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

Oh and Hi JtotheK! And 23 Wolves! Splendid riding with you!
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

This is my favorite Neu! track. This is maybe my favorite guitar track. Though I just learned that some of it may be Dinger's treated koto (!)
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

get ready to hear this one at a couple different speeds!
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

What a ballsy move... no money? we'll just fuck with the tracks we do have!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Gary:

Hey there!
Avatar 7:57pm Little Danny:

I don't think I'd properly appreciated the similarities between "Super" (correct speed) and Can's "Father Cannot Yell" until you played the former, just now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Scraps:

some people really hate this because of that.
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

Hi Gary!

@LD: yeah, I sometimes hear Liebezeit credited with the motorik sound, and I'm pretty incredulous, and then I remember the proto-motorik, Mo Tucker influenced sound of Monster Movies and it makes some sense
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

@Scraps: for sure. Understandably so, though I get pretty into it on a good day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Scraps:

ballsy = lazy, to some people.

not me, but i don't think it's a revelation, either
Avatar 8:01pm Little Danny:

It does kinda go back to VU in some way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Scraps:

ack, i didn't see your last message before i posted my last.
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

@ Scraps: I hear ya

@ LD: definitely
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

all good scraps me lad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm melinda:

Hi explorers!
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm melinda:

Looks like a great show.
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Can anyone guess how I'm going to end this set, I wonder. it's an inevitable pick
Avatar 8:07pm hyde:

woo hoo, melinda!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Thanks, Melinda, I hope so anyway!
Avatar 8:08pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Flash & Explorers
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

Hi C!

and this is how: it had to be Hero
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

This track is so sAVAGe
Avatar 8:27pm geezerette:

Evan, your shows are always so beautifully structured.
Wonderful how that amplifies and clarifies the music.
You make it shine,man.
Avatar 8:29pm Flash Strap:

That means so much, Geezerette, thank you. I try, I really try!

Some feel that Harmonia is the ultimate krautrock group. Where do we stand on that one, all?
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

also, this is such a hilariously fast reading of Walky-Talky from Deluxe (almost half the length) that it's almost like one of those Neu! 2 "remixes"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm doctorjazz:

Now this sounds more like I'd picture Kraftwerk sounding, this Harmonia track.
(I know incredibly little about all this stuff, definitely getting a schooling).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm melinda:

I don't know much about Neu!, Harmonia, or Kraftwerk but I always like hearing them on WFMU, so it's nice to have a show of this theme.
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

Speaking of sounding-like, it's sort of odd at this time that Rother (w/Harmonia) would do something that sounds SO much like his old buddy Dinger. I'd love to know the story - this sounds so much more like Dinger's side of Neu! 75, which was recorded later in the same year
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

next up, we have a track w/ neither Dinger or Rother, but a Moebius & Plank track from 1981 that shows the enduring motorik influence. Then on to Rother's sleepy cosmic country drives!
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

love this track. Moebius&Plank are the best
Avatar 8:41pm quinn:

I never thought of Harmonia as the *ultimate* krautrock group. But I don't know that I have an alternate in mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Scraps:

Because Krautrock is not a style, I can't feel that anyone is the ultimate Krautrock.
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Hi Quinn!

Well put, Scraps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Scraps:

But boy, I like Moebius
Avatar 8:45pm quinn:

this track is goofy
Avatar 8:45pm geezerette:

punk in a T. Rex kind of way
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

Scraps, Quinn, Geezerette: you all speak my mind

I really think M&P recorded 2 of the best records of all time when they got together for this and Rastakraut Pasta. Playful, but basically just as good as the best Harmonia or Cluster
Avatar 8:48pm geezerette:

& the country western/western swing thing... :)
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

This, just like almost everything else so far, recorded with and by Conny Plank
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

It's funny to hear Liebezeit play something so simple. He works a lot of subtle variation into it
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

This is sort of the idealized, every-Rother composition, at least of this period
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm doctorjazz:

Like Sterntaler, sounds like it could be an anthem of some sort, maybe for a soccer/futball game.
Time to hit the road, thanks Flash!
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

a little boring, a little sentimental. But nonetheless: Motorik
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

totally, Doc! drive safe, friend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm melinda:

White overalls? heehee
Avatar 9:16pm Flash Strap:

I know, ridiculous

you can see an early attempt at the white overalls thing in this video foe Neu!'s "Hero". Basically La Düsseldorf losing their minds in their duds while Rother sits on the side and noodles, looking visibly depressed to be there
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

pretty epic track, this
Avatar 9:20pm northguineahills:

I'm totally not going to bookmark this archive ;)
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! definitely don't!
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

insane vocals!
Avatar 9:23pm coelacanth∅:

Evan, i was out of earshot for "tiki taka" & the comments compelled me to back up my player for a taste of it. i backed up to your last mic break for bearing (which i didn't need!) and heard you mention that "ambient" music originally meant "background" music - which i remember, when Eno started his ambient series...
but for me, ambient means "surrounding", or "engulfing". there's no such thing as background music for me. if it's audible, i'm listening to it.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

I totally agree. Really what I meant was that I see the distinction between previous incarnations of ambient or mood music or background music and the Eno-era "ambient" ethos to be slightly dubious, that most psychedelic bands had played with being ambient in much the same way as Harmonia would do (even though Harmonia did it better for the most part)
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

also I didn't mean to imply that ambient and background were synonymous for Eno's intentions. I was mainly addressing sentiments such as these:

"Perhaps Eno's reason for praising Harmonia so highly was that their music fit the requirements of ambient rock. Its music was equally suitable for active or passive listening. The careful listener found his/her attentions rewarded by the musical activities and sounds, but Harmonia's music was also capable of setting a sonic environment."

Which is a significant musical concept, which I hold dear, and which definitely predates the Eno or the 1970s. I just wanted to stress the continuity between that and things that would have been described in their time as "background"
Avatar 9:33pm coelacanth∅:

- i guess i'll hear everything you said when i revisit this expedition.
(and revisit it i shall)
Avatar 9:35pm Flash Strap:

well, give it a listen I guess, but I was also left with a feeling that I hadn't adequately expressed what I meant to express, and I thank you for the opportunity to clarify myself
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

wild cover on this one, looks very contemporary somehow, but also SUPER NYC GLAM: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

Then there's this shock to the system: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:41pm coelacanth∅:

haha! i'm not going to forsake what i'm hearing now to back up again! but i already knew i'd listen to the whole program again, at least because i've missed a lot of it.
...but in that moment when i happened to hear that sentence, i did also hear something about you laughing at the notion, no?
-you may have been more clear than you give yourself credit for!
Avatar 9:41pm Little Danny:

Flash, I've had yer show on whilst putting together my own - I already know this is one I'll be revisiting many times! So much great new-old material from a scene that I love, and that I thought I already knew pretty well
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

Perhaps, C! I never know how well I've made a point and later I worry about it endlessly

SO glad LD! So damn glad!
Avatar 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

(and in case it is i who wasn't clear -which is kind of my m.o., my initial comment wasn't at odds with anything you said. i was only speaking for my own perspective)
Avatar 9:51pm hyde:

cool show. thanx.
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

No, I get you C.! I always love a good dialogue man

Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

My pleasure Hyde!

Right with ya, Quinn
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hams! Thanks man
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

SUCH good guitar here, my GOD
Avatar 9:56pm quinn:

so good
Avatar 9:58pm coelacanth∅:

Brilliant program Evan! Thanks!
Avatar 9:58pm northguineahills:

Yeah coelacanth∅, Even when I listen to Eno's first excursions in ambience, or post-Cagean atmospheres, the sound is still the center of my focus. When Bernhard Gunter says to play below the threshold of being audible, I turn it all the way up!

Thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:58pm Flash Strap:

Thanks all!
