Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

The edge of town. Photo taken earlier today by Natalie Melendez.

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.
    Raymond Chandler ("Red Wind" -1938)

Avatar 10:05pm hyde:

Avatar 10:05pm Little Danny:

MrF! I wish I'd been there for ya
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

Hyde once again you demonstrate good tastes. The Bill Mack is among my very favorite lonesome country 45s
Avatar 10:08pm coelacanth∅:

this all is making me miss the life i never had. it was on my agenda, but shit happened.
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

Never too late coel. Come visit us in Marfa!
  10:12pm MrFab:

That "Echo Valley" is a good example of the transition from Western to surf. Lots of "surf" was just hormonally energized Western tunes like "Apache." From Link Wray's "Commanche" > Ventures covering Chet Atkins ("Walk Dont Run") > Surfaris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Doug Schulkind:

The flame is cool and it is blue. Everything is right with the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm melinda:

Yeah, the Western-surf overlap is interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm doctorjazz:

Hi Danny and y'all or there.

@MrF & Melinda: totally! Doug!

Avatar 10:45pm Little Danny:

J2tK: so glad you made it!
  10:46pm MrFab:

Nah, not your fault, Im a bit computer illiterate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm JtotheK:

interesting take on green dolphin street. i like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm JtotheK:

and this dynamics is fantastic. though i have to stop looking up these 45s, as this appears to be another 'unattainable' 45.
  10:55pm MrFab:

I know the feeling JtotheK. Looking up some of the tunes from the CD premium makes me wish I'd pledged more so i could have got it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm melinda:

'night everyone!
Avatar 11:08pm Little Danny:

Don't worry Jason - I don't own that Dynamics 45
Avatar 11:08pm Little Danny:

'Night Melinda! Nice as always to spend time with you
Avatar 11:14pm Little Danny:

Atmospheric guitar-based instrumentals keep pulling me back into the hot wind this evening. Hope y'all are diggin' this groove
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm JtotheK:

i know nothing about the guitar instro music you've been spinning but have been enjoying, very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm JtotheK:

and internet research on that converters 45 - genre descriptions include rockabilly, exotica, and instro noir. i may have to look for other 45s in the "instro noir" genre. seems adjacent to the "crime jazz" genre.
  11:19pm MrFab:

Heck ya Im diggin it. I live in Raymond Chandler-ville, after all.

An instro version of "Surfin Tragedy"! Have you heard the goofy vocal versions?
Avatar 11:19pm Little Danny:

It's possible you came upon my own recent eBay auction of said record, Jason. I described it as "instro noir."
Avatar 11:20pm Little Danny:

MrF, I think I have heard at least one version, but I tend to blot out novelties
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm JtotheK:

@dan, i believe you are correct! my internet research of course leads right back here. ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm JtotheK:

b/w another 45 described as instro noir was Rene Hall 'Night Fright'. Don't know it, will have to check out.
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

Haha, that Rene Hall write-up was mine, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm JtotheK:

whoa! all 'instro noir' roads lead back to the cool blue flame, i suppose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm doctorjazz:

Great early Miles.
Avatar 11:33pm Little Danny:

@DrJ: I love Birth of the Cool so much
  11:33pm MrFab:

You can hear "Night Fright" on Danny's "Lonely Beat" website. (Unless it's been removed.) Noir sounds abound there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm doctorjazz:

Birth of the Cool is great stuff! Enjoyed the show a whole lot LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm JtotheK:

ahhhhh!!!!!! mo' taters!

Avatar 11:47pm Little Danny:

Thanks Doctor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm JtotheK:

my pal (RIP -- miss him, a lot!) that had a weekly soul DJ gig (and was kind enough to let me spin 45s with him when schedule permitted) - mo taters was a fave of his. i haven't spun out in a while, but have that in a box for next time i do spin. whenever that ends up being.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm JtotheK:

@dan, thanks will check out your site! enjoyed the show tonight, very much. thanks again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm doctorjazz:
