I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Evergreen question of late, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and all. Sadly, I'll have to rely on the archives for most of this show: I'll leave halfway through to see Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's A Love Supreme. My birthday present to myself, it looked like a good idea until this show switched to Saturdays
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: yes. I just carry around that thought balloon now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm listener james from westwood:

Happy birthday, Fred, and enjoy the present!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Greetings, Mayukomorphs! Happy birthday, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Ike:

I was here on time for once! Sounds great so far! Also: HB HB HB, Fred.
Avatar 12:08pm Mayuko:

Thanks for tuning in, everyone! I will explain this in a bit. And Happy birthday, fred!! Apparently you share birthday with Daniel Blumin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Jeff Golick:

Happy day, and glad you were able to completely circle the sun yet another time, @fred.
Avatar 12:11pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko, perhaps if the morphthing could wink once in a while it might lighten the how shall we say view.
Avatar 12:12pm Brian in UK:

I am going to morph into a bottle of cold beer, presently.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm fred:

@Mayuko: that's quite a happy coincidence (for me) as a friend has played on his show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

We read the Little House books in our school, too. I was so sad to come to the part where Jack the bulldog died and Mary went blind. The bad winter they endured was also scary to think about.
Avatar 12:13pm Brian in UK:

@fred happy daze. Is it dance/music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm listener james from westwood:

Nellie Olson would've voted for Trump, her and that mother of hers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm fred:

@Brian: recorded music. I don't think many musicians would dare play A Love Supreme for a dance show. I thinks it's a shame, but that's how it goes

Mayuko, if you do ever dip into the "Little House" TV show, the wonder that is Michael Landon's 70s hair awaits you.
Avatar 12:18pm Brian in UK:

@james do not mention the Cartwrights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Ike:

I've never read the Little House books, but I'm guessing that for conservatives, they have a political dimension. A lot of right-wingers like to fantasize that they are rugged frontiersmen who can survive on their own without any help from the government. (Where they think they'll get roads, streetlights, bridges, policemen, firemen, etc. is beyond my understanding.) For others, I imagine the books never seemed political in the first place (?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm fred:

That's a sensible reason for the morphing. At first I was worried it was a requirement for green card application

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm fred:

@Ken: I love how the first choice is "visit" or "shop"
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

@james Haha! Michael Landon's playing Pa in that series was very much loved in Japan back in those days though, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 12:30pm Mayuko:

Sorry for my late comment responses today, the songs in those days were quite short and I'm too used to 10 min drone tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@fred - A map of how to find the place would be helpful, but they don't have one listed. At least they make it easy to shop for stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm fred:

I like this Test Dept. track a lot
Avatar 12:36pm Brian in UK:

This is less industrial than some earlier Test Dept.
  12:37pm rw:

Hello! Playlist is looking more and more like a flag as the show progresses.
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

@Ike, you're right. It was written with a very political intention of Laura and her daughter Rose who was a libertarian. I didn't know the books omit things like the fact such as they received government support to send one of the daughters to college for blind people. But as a child, it never seemed political to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm fred:

@Mayuko: Did you go see Phew earlier this week? Hers was one of my favorite shows at Sonic Protest
Avatar 12:41pm Mayuko:

Hello, rw! and yes, it sounds more like a collage piece than industrial, Brian, I liked it a lot. Not as creepy as "Johnny Comes Marching Home", but.
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

fred, I wish to go but I had fever and bed-ridden. Bummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm doctorjazz:

Hi Mayuko and all. Been here but walking the pooch, using phone app. Great mix of music. Worried for a moment about whether Trump liked any books I have, and what the morph would look like, then remembered he doesn't read books!
Happy Birthday Fred! Sounds like a great way to celebrate!
  12:45pm P-90:

Hi Mayuko and Vertigo Players! Always good sounds.
Avatar 12:47pm Mayuko:

Hi doctorjazz! Haha, we can all feel relieved that he doesn't read books. I heard that Ronald Reagan liked the Little House too. At least he was handsome and wouldn't have caused too much trouble in terms of morphing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@doctorjazz - Yes, mounting evidence that Drumpf can't read. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm paul b:

I thought I'd read one of those Laura Wilder "Little House on the Prairrie" books but thinking further what I read (in 4th or 5th grade in Massachussets) was a book called "the Cabin faced West" not a memoir and set earlier in the trans-appalachian pioneer period. I also read a book about the same time about a boy who raises a baby owl as a pet in Saskatuwan. That one was a true story by the author Farley Mowat
  12:48pm P-90:

@Mayuko-san: unhappy news to learn that you were sick recently. I hope you are feeling all better now.
Avatar 12:50pm Mayuko:

Hi P-90! I feel much better now - just my voice sounds sick, I hope you don't mind!
Avatar 12:50pm Mayuko:

I'd love to go to that visitor center. and see all other places in the books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm tmoyo:

My sister (Japanese ) had a Little House cookbook when she was a young teen and used to cook recipes from them. She went out of the way to get ingredients like cornmeal molasses and lard that was hard to come by in Japanese supermarkets. Now she lives in Wisconsin (Trump land I guess?) and voted for Hilary last election(born in NJ so has US citizenship)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm tmoyo:

I hope you get well soon Mayuko.. Hearty White seemed unwell on his show too. I guess it's the changing of the season.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm fred:

Time for me to leave, I'll catch the rest on the archives. I hope you'll recover quickly. I'll miss next week's show too: I'll get to see Gnod at last
Avatar 1:10pm glenn:

oddly enough, the ayn randians generally neglect to mention how she ended up, on welfare and medicare. it doesn't suit the narrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm listener james from westwood:

Yep. Dying of, what, lung cancer, getting Medicare under another name. Where's your moon-eyed acolyte Alan Greenspan now, Alisa?
  1:16pm rw:

Working on taxes this morning. What a fitting show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm doctorjazz:

Like this version On The Bruce band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Mauyko - If you feel well enough soon, there's an exhibit on Japanese internment at the FDR museum up here.
Avatar 1:21pm Mayuko:

paul b, I would love to read some more true stories from that time period. I'll look into those books later. Especially since now I learned that Little House series was a fiction based on some facts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm mauri:

I find distant train whistles so calming. If that's what I just heard in the background there, based on the album title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm ἶkε:

I guess most other countries' conservatives don't have this libertarian streak where they want to tear down the govt. and destroy the safety net because of this fantasy of tough frontiersman self-reliance. I read a lot of Japanese news (in English) for work and there's always a lot of stuff about Shinzo Abe's govt., but I don't fully understand the context. Do you have an opinion on Abe, Mayuko?
Avatar 1:33pm Mayuko:

Hola mauri! and glenn! Thanks for tuning in!
tmoyo san, that is AMAZING. I wonder if she has made that black bird meat pie thing. That looked soooo good in the book! I'd sing a song of sixpence too. Vanity cakes sounded really good too.
Avatar 1:36pm glenn:

i'd be more worried about betsy devos and her love for charter schools than i would be about health care, to be honest, but that's just me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Mayuko - How was your art opening at LITM last Tuesday? I read about it in the WFMU newsletter. www.litm.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm paul b:

By coincidence I've spent the last few weekends reading a large book called "the Oxford History of the American West" which i've found fascinating for bringing order to a lifetime of scattered romantic or mythologisized notions of the west
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm tmoyo:

No, not the black bird pie i'm afraid.... It was ironical that the recipe was supposed to be a basic meal made with everyday ingredients but didn't play out that way in a foreign country.. Wonder how we can substitute the bird here in Japan. She also drived my mom crazy making dried apple chips on a laundry drying rope.
Avatar 1:48pm Mayuko:

Ike, I don't like that he is connected to this right wing political group who's pushing pre-war shinto belief (warships the emperor etc) that also supported world war 2 JP empire. Speaking of charter school, there is this ongoing thing around him there

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm doctorjazz:

Thanks for the great show, Mayuko!
  1:53pm rw:

Yes, thanks as always Mayuko! Glad you're feeling better too. Enjoy the weekend everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm tmoyo:

I find the way Shinzo Abe and his supporters push nationalistic values to the Japanese people is twisted. It traces an American style of patriotism like vowing allegiance to the national flag and singing the national anthem.

Anyways.. Thanks for the wonderful show Mayuko! I will check the links for the articles.
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

Now I guess I'm gradually morphing back to just Mayuko.
Avatar 1:56pm glenn:

Avatar 1:59pm Mayuko:

Avatar 2:00pm Mayuko:

I'm going a liiiiitle bit over my time slot... I'd like to give a happy/positive end to this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm ἶkε:

Interesting, thanks. I'd heard of that one ultra-nationalist school, of course. But I wasn't clear on whether or not this kind of thing is widespread w/Abe's supporters in general. Jingoism is always scary to me but it seems like they try to disguise it a little more in Japan from what little I can understand. Meanwhile here in the U.S. it has become very much out in the open, as we all can see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm tmoyo:

Pet Shop Boys!!! love love love!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I forget...how's come some song titles have an asterisk behind them today? I remember Alien vs. Allen, but I'm confused on the rest, sorry.
Avatar 2:04pm glenn:

the one and only purpose of charter schools is to raise little right wing christian morons. education isn't even a consideration.
Avatar 2:05pm Mayuko:

Those asterisk* indicates that it's a song appears in the series Little House, Ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

With its blend of Soviet kitsch and gay positivity, this video would drive Putin straight up a tree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Irritating that Betsy DeVos is scamming the government out of $8M for her personal security protection for the rest of this year. That'd buy a lot of textbooks and paste for needy schools.
Aah...thanks, Mayuko. I missed the announcement. Have a good week with the warming weather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm listener james from westwood:
