Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

So after waking up unintentionally and frustratingly a couple hours earlier than desired this morning, then having a busy section of the day, I napped fitfully into the evening, with dreams of being drunk. Now how will I get squared-up sleep soon tonight? I need music that will achieve a full system reset.
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

Hyde and still b/p! Delighted to have you
Avatar 10:05pm Little Danny:

@still b/p: I love this challenge. What sort of music or mood would help secure a reset?
Avatar 10:06pm hyde:

@still b/p dang. i've been sleeping weird all week, myself. what is with that.
Avatar 10:07pm Little Danny:

I had some too-realistic dreams last night. Gorgonzola-related
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm doctorjazz:

hi all! Just konked out a bit myself.
Avatar 10:09pm Little Danny:

DrJ! I'm glad you roused yourself enough to be here
Avatar 10:11pm still b/p:

I think spring introduces sleep stumbles for me -- the changing earlier light and maybe something in human seasonal response messing more subtley with circadian mojo.

This show always enjoyable, Danny, so your brand of normal HAS to be beneficial, I gotta think.
Avatar 10:14pm Little Danny:

Thanks still b/p - here's to hoping for a show of clarity and focus for you!
Avatar 10:14pm still b/p:

This Besame Mucho version...THASSS whum talkin' 'bout!
Avatar 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

huh, i take one wrong turn and this party's in full swing.
greetings Danny and fire eaters
Avatar 10:15pm Little Danny:

What part of the country are you in, still b/p?

Avatar 10:15pm Little Danny:

Coel! NOW it's in full swing my friend. Welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm melinda:

hi all
  10:18pm MrFab:

Been here since 7. Am on a crazy big work project tonite but thought I'd poke my head in the lounge and say 'yo'.
Avatar 10:19pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, i've been sleeping weird all my life. i wouldn't know what kind of rhythm to aim for to reset it!
  10:20pm MrFab:

7:00 PST, that is. Can see the sun setting out my window o'er the mighty Pacific.
Avatar 10:20pm Little Danny:

Melinda! MrF! Thanks for joining the soiree
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

hola melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm melinda:

I often have crappy sleep in spite of doing all the things that are supposed to help.
Avatar 10:24pm still b/p:

Worked a fairly standard M - F daytime schedule for more than 30 years. When last place of long-time employment went out of business 4 1/2 years ago, I just didn't get back in the regular work grid. I'm sure the great variation and irregularities in timings and choices haven't helped. System says, "WHAT you DOING?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm doctorjazz:

All those cool 45s, wow!
Avatar 10:36pm Little Danny:

Thanks Doctor. They definitely keep me on my toes during this show
Avatar 10:39pm still b/p:

Speaking (hearing) of organs, among the proposals submitted for whoosamajerko's border construction: "a semi-continuous wall of nearly 10 million pipe organs."
Avatar 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

one source states Billy Preston was 14 when he recorded volcano -which would be 1960. (so as you said -probably his first release)
Avatar 10:40pm Little Danny:

Hahaha. I wanna hear I wanna hear!
Avatar 10:40pm Little Danny:

Wow, thanks Coel. Incredible.
Avatar 10:41pm northguineahills:

Damn it, wish I had my records, So, I can can pull out my Ocho record out.
Avatar 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

10,000,000 pipe organs? we might be able to hear it in upstate ny! (or feel it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Doug Schulkind:

In 1974, my afro was bigger than Billy Preston's.
Avatar 10:43pm Little Danny:

NGH! The three Ocho LPs on UA-Latino have survived many purges of my record collection's Latin section. I love them.

Where are your records?
Avatar 10:45pm Little Danny:

You can't just say things like that and not post photos, Doug
Avatar 10:47pm still b/p:

The plan calls for spaces between the organs. Anyone passing through is supposed to stop and play for two minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Doug Schulkind:

This might be a bit before '74. Had some growin' yet to do: c2.staticflickr.com...

If the comments allowed emojis that would get ten thousand hearts
Avatar 10:50pm still b/p:

The lost brother of Bernie from Room 222!
  10:52pm MrFab:

The preponderance of vibraphones in tonights show has not gone unnoticed. Nice vibes give off nice vibes.
  10:53pm MrFab:

Doug: Right on, my brutha! *raises fist*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Doug Schulkind:

That's my WFMU adoption photo. The wonderful Maggie B from Rock Tavern adopted me.

@still b/p
Yes, Bernie was my doppelgänger (or I was his). We both had a crush on Miss Johnson (Karen Valentine).
Avatar 10:54pm Little Danny:

Thanks MrF. Vibes are preferred instruments around here
Avatar 10:55pm Little Danny:

You're the greatest, Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Kids used to throw pencils into my head from across the room. Once I tried to swat a pencil away and it impaled the palm of my right hand. Forty years later, I still have a graphite-colored scar there.
Avatar 10:59pm northguineahills:

I can still see about a half-dozen pieces of graphite floating in my palms...most (accidentally) self-inflicted.
Avatar 10:59pm still b/p:

Speaking of throwing things, just saw that Trump, man of so many "stay out" pronouncements, sent 50 Tomahawks to a Syrian airbase tonight. But no more news now....muuuuuusic only.
Avatar 11:00pm northguineahills:

My records are in storage. I just had an interview today, and they'll know in two week if they'll have the budget for the position. Will be nice to have my own place again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Doug Schulkind:

On the last day of 9th grade, riding the bus home, two girls stuck their cigarette in my hair and it caught on fire. From across the bus, Becky Lahargue, all 200+ pounds of her, came diving atop me and put my flaming head out in the folds of her stomach.

Hours later at home, my mother picked up the phone and, hearing the story from another kid's mother, yelled at me with horror, "Douglas, next time you TELL ME when you hair catches on fire on the school bus!!"
Avatar 11:02pm still b/p:

"Douglas, you sit next to Becky on the bus every day!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Doug Schulkind:

I felt guilty for years after having never thanked Becky. I was just so mortified by the whole thing.
Avatar 11:08pm still b/p:

There was Bernie, and then there was Burney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 11:12pm northguineahills:

The only time I've ever caught my hair on fire, it was also self-inflicted. Lighters set too high, bbqs gone amiss, getting a little too enthusiastic w/ the bonfire, etc. I'm probably unintentionally my worse enemy, yet, I've rarely seriously hurt myself. (one serious bike accident was my fault).
Avatar 11:13pm Little Danny:

Here's to hoping NGH!
Avatar 11:14pm still b/p:

We belong together like Blue belongs with Moon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Our very-long-haired domestic cat Bluestar once caught his tail on fire in our menorah. Chasing a burning cat around the house is less fun than it sounds.
Avatar 11:16pm Little Danny:

Poor Bluestar!
Avatar 11:16pm coelacanth∅:

i've never caught on fire except a few hairs now and then. (which is sort of weird, since i've nearly always had long hair and am not particularly cautious.)
- i have caught my boots on fire though.
Avatar 11:17pm still b/p:

There were enough miraculous cat tails to keep the Temple lit for eight days or nine lives or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm doctorjazz:

A friend way back used to like to take match packs from restaurants, stick them in his coat pocket, which shot out flames as we left one establishment.
Avatar 11:18pm coelacanth∅:

still b/p haha!
... but really, i hope bluestar was okay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm doctorjazz:

Never burned myself, though I've been hit in the head with a baseball bat, and done all sorts of damage to myself falling off bicycles.
Avatar 11:20pm still b/p:

....and, lo, what radio show is being warmed by all this talk of fire incidents?
Avatar 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Doug Schulkind:

I am happy to report Bluestar has survived at least 10 more menorahs.
Avatar 11:22pm Little Danny:

Haha, still b/p. The fires of foolish and callow youth still burn on this radio show!
Avatar 11:24pm coelacanth∅:

(i don't remember if my boots burned a cool blue flame or not.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm doctorjazz:

Nice Springfield.
Avatar 11:25pm coelacanth∅:

Doug i'm happy to hear that.
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

Thanks DrJ. This song devastates
  11:27pm MrFab:

I got Buffalo Springfield Again as a teen and pretty much played the 3 Neil tunes to death.
Avatar 11:29pm Little Danny:

Those are my faves too MrF
Avatar 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

Neil's a genius.
maybe his lyrics have become elementary, preachy and even a bit silly at times; and his music fairly predictable -even recycled.....
still - he's a genius.
Avatar 11:32pm still b/p:

Fredereek very Who-ey.
Avatar 11:33pm Little Danny:

Coel: do you have any fave Neil Young albums to recommend? I'm woefully unaware of his discography, aside from the classic rock hits
Avatar 11:33pm coelacanth∅:

yeh i thought it was early who for a second.
...and this! Del Shannon. i had no idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm doctorjazz:

Del Shannon? Wow!
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

Yes indeed still b/p! Flipside of that 45 is superb, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm doctorjazz:

Tonight's The Night is really raw Young. After The Gold rush is a classic. And Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere had one of the great one note guitars solos.
  11:37pm MrFab:

Whoah Danny, don't get me started on Neil! Apart from his s/t debut, nothing he did ever sounded like that orchestrated Buffalo Spring-stuff. But can't go wrong with "After The Gold Rush" or "Everybody Knows This Is nowhere.".
Avatar 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

LD, i still like "everybody knows this is nowhere"; "zuma"; and "on the beach" the best.
but close behind: "tonight's the night"; "after the gold rush"; "harvest"...
Avatar 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

i think every album has at least a few absolutely Stellar tracks, up to hawks and doves.
Avatar 11:41pm still b/p:

Cool Blue Flame goes by SO speedy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm doctorjazz:

Thanks LD!
Avatar 11:47pm Little Danny:

Thanks for the recs, MrF and coel!
Avatar 11:55pm still b/p:

Thanks for top-notch show. Here's wishing a cool blue snooze to all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Little Danny, big flame!
Avatar 12:00am coelacanth∅:

Danny -not to dwell on it, but there are a few cuts on NY albums not mentioned that i feel you'd like, though not great albums overall.
"powderfinger"& "pocohontas" from rust never sleeps; "four strong winds" from comes a time; "the old laughing lady" from neil young; "star of bethlehem" & "will to love" from american stars and bars; "campagner" & "down to the wire" on the compilation "decade".
Avatar 12:02am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny!
tchau camaradas!
Avatar 12:03am Little Danny:

Thanks, and thanks Coel. I'm gonna be studying these Neil Young recommendations in the week to come
Avatar 12:03am Little Danny:

Have a great night/morning/afternoon everybody! XOXO
