hi Duane, hi fellow trainers! Happy to be aboard today!

Michael 98145:

Yay, Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940)
Avatar 12:06pm
Cecile:

Do you think by this point Herbie has nodded enough to trad jazz to be forgiven by his harshest critics for going in a pop direction in the 70s and 80s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Polyus:

Weird timing, I just listened to a podcast interview with Mike Clark earlier this morning, who played drums on Thrust, Flood, and Man-child.
Avatar 12:08pm
Jshatan:

@Cecile I think many of those "harsh critics" probably ate their words eventually...love it or hate it (and I go both ways with Herbie), he's more than earned the right to do whatever.
Avatar 12:09pm
Duane:

Cecile: You know..I don't think he actually realle cared that much, but yeah, at this point people like him and Patrice Rushen made those arguments moot..literally 20 or more years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
JtotheK:

@Cecile - I sure hope so. Herbie's got jams spanning multiple decades. And from a variety of music, even within the 'jazz' umbrella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
JtotheK:

I'll have to give Fat Albert Rotunda a spin, been a while. And Crossings. And the great track 'Bring Down The Birds' (which Dee Lite sampled in a great way).

Avatar 12:14pm
KRYPT:

Hiya Duane, I love this Herbie track and I also love the wonderfully cheesy Sexosonique housey rework of "I thought it was you" from the mid 90s, guilty plesh ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Passaic River Blues:

@Cecile: I don't know but I hope so. Criticism that centers on the music a musician *should* be making rather than the music itself is generally axe-grinding puffery that's best ignored. Of course, I make this kind of critique all the time, so never listen to me.
Avatar 12:16pm
Duane:

Krypt: It's a fave of mine too..I actually first heard it in a club scene in the Jackie Collins Sexploitation flick "The Bitch" :)

I know that Stereo Review in the 70s about had a damn stroke when he started using electric keyboards.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Polyus:

It's a pretty wonderful podcast overall. Joe Wong interviews drummers from all across the musical spectrum and stays away from all the boring "what size sticks do you use" questions. A lot more about musical and life experiences, philosophy, etc.
Avatar 12:35pm
Jshatan:

@Cecile Herbie's first foray into electric keys came on Stuff in 1968 - and even he was resistant! Miles insisted because he was starting to get into Hendrix and Sly thanks to Ms. Mabry (AKA Betty Davis) and knew that he needed to plug in to get to where they were. Herbie had to go along to get along...

Peace all. Head Hunter is one of "Ten Jazz Albums to Hear Before You Die" per the Village Voice...it is awesome!
Avatar 12:50pm
Cecile:

Yeah, I think if Herbie was doing really shitty pop stuff, perhaps the criticism would be warranted, but he made some world-class funk albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
blee:

I got the Magic Number / Everybody's Broke 12" at a thrift store recently. I really dig the percussion on those tracks. bongos and congas at war w each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm

Still with us and keeps up quite a busy schedule for a 77-year old, from what I can see.

That was a really judicious selection of HH, Duane. I'll probably revisit like I did the other day with the Billy Paul/Prince show.

Dren Nilso:

Thanks thanks thanks!!!! I have been putting off diving into Herbie Hancock for so many years (aside from Maiden Voyage)- waiting for the right time. But now I realize just how dumb I was for waiting. Can't wait to explore further! Feeling great! Thanks!
