For generations the Gnawa people, descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans, faced discrimination in Morocco. And their rich musical traditions were neglected. The smashing success of the Gnaoua World Music Festival in the beautiful Atlantic coast city of Essauoira has helped change that.
This year's 20th annual festival takes place from June 29th to July 1st. Hicham El Kebbaj, an artistic director of the festival, joins us this week to talk about the festival and the music.
