This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

On this psychedelic day, Explorers Room would like to invite you to participate in a science experiment from your own home. All you need is a laughing string! To be elaborated upon shortly I'm sure with the aid and guidance of Henry Jacobs and his team

Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Eevening Hyde, LD!

Did we all come wrapped up in our Laughing String, I wonder

I'm laughin I know that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Scraps:

Oup! Never mind then
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

I know Paul is on that track Scraps, but I don't think I ever heard of Mick being in on it – is that a thing to know?
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

This guy is just such a great guitarist, what a cool session
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm doctorjazz:

Cool psychedelic jam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Scraps:

Did I misremember?
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Not sure. I know that McCartney plays the celery on the Vega-tables sessions. That I know
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

anyway did everyone have a good day on this day?
Avatar 7:15pm hyde:

my day was ok. made some muffins.
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

blueberry ?
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

cardamom-vanilla-pecan
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

oh NICE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm doctorjazz:

Fine day on this end; usually work late Thursday nights, nice to have the Explorer company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm doctorjazz:

Talk about psychedelic and McCartney, backwards tape stuff on this Jade, no?
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

totally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings to Admiral Strap and all goofer-offers!
Avatar 7:31pm Little Danny:

Henry Jacobs is so cool
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

Greetings Honorable Admiral with Honours Doug and COMPLETELY AGREED Danny

Lot of Jacobs tonight, so get ready. he is our guide and our tormentor in the lab
Avatar 7:33pm Little Danny:

Excellent
Avatar 7:34pm Little Danny:

Doug! How goes the end-of-semester madness?
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

I second that query Cap'n
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm doctorjazz:

Yeah, Doug, how's the papers and exams going?
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

Kevin Ayers is such a weirdo
Avatar 7:40pm Little Danny:

To my knowledge this is the first time I've actually heard Kevin Ayers. Is he always so VU-ish? I seriously dig!
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

he's all over the place. he's like terminally lazy, but really creative. Hard to say... you should check him out. he did do a famous concert with Nico and John Cale. And a some stuff with Eno.
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

I really like Ayers' Whatevershebringswesing and a lot of Bananamour, but have sort of struggled with a lot of the rest of it. But I can't stop coming back to what I like, I'll say that
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Maybe my favorite Seeds song here. Some of the best Sky Saxon guitar outside of Ya Ho Wa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Scraps:

He's Soft Machine. Not really VU-ish as at the same time, American and England, VU and Soft Machine. To me...
Avatar 7:49pm Little Danny:

Sky Saxon's lyrics are so endearingly dumb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Scraps:

Little Danny, I would think you would like =Joy of a Toy=
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

Fair point, though his solo stuff doesn't have much of the jazz-math that a lot of Soft Machine has, at least later on. He's extremely Canterbury scene, and that's a fact we can all agree on I'm sure of it

I like Joy of a Toy too, I forgot that one
Avatar 7:51pm Little Danny:

Thanks for the tip, Scraps!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

@LD re: Saxon – and the delivery sells it! always the same sneering vowels, no matter the subject
Avatar 7:52pm Little Danny:

My knowledge of the Canterbury Scene is pathetically limited
Avatar 7:53pm Little Danny:

Totally! Saxon was forever vocally in the same gear, but oh what a gear it was
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

One of the best Italian psych nuggets out there, this one. So spy-heavy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
Just finished the third of three finals. Now I have two papers to finish by Tuesday. I could sleep for a month.
Avatar 8:00pm Little Danny:

Good luck sir, I feel yer pain!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Holy shit Doug. That brings back feelings I had repressed. Best of luck!
Avatar 8:04pm Little Danny:

Same, Flash. Serious PTSD over here.
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

Athanor is so good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

hello explorers!
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

I don't know why that Carnival of Light stuff isn't talked about more
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

"pickin a hot storm up over the ocean" hysterical delivery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
You never want to repress a holy shit. God would smite you with an enema of the people.

Thanks and good night. I'll be here all week.
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

Doug's got his laughing string out!
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

Seriously, this is SUCH a good Turtles song. It's everything that's good about the Turtles, in my opinion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm melinda:

This is great, I agree.
Avatar 8:24pm Little Danny:

Baby Grandmothers is a record I lust after
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Oh I bet! I imagine this is quite the lusted-after 7" in your collectors' underworld. They didn't press very many of these, if I recall
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

Plus it's just INSANELY good. Unfathomably fuckin awesome
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

"rare hamburgers"
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

This whole record is just a pure beam of bizarre
Avatar 8:36pm geezerette:

one hit wonders
Avatar 8:38pm geezerette:

What an excellent party this is.
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

H o w d y Geezerette!
Avatar 8:40pm geezerette:

Howdy back Evan !
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

How are you tonight and how was your day and how nice it is to have you with us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Scraps:

Luv this!
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

me too man, it really gets me
Avatar 8:46pm geezerette:

:D And how nice of you to say so Evan!
I'm feeling no pain, can't complain, right as rain!
What an incredibly great playlist.
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

Very glad to hear it G! and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm melinda:

Was there an explanation of the Laughing String before I joined the party?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Scraps:

All you bongoists!
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

haha, yes, sort of. it's an enigmatic concept that loosely maps to pot parties or whatever, but not so neatly that it's an actual metaphor. It's completely bizarre and surreal. it's my way of undermining the day and celebrating the cause at the same time, and playing a lot of classic psych sounds while disrupting them with clinical surrealism
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

in other words, i got wrapped up in my laughing string and came up with the show between peals of absurd chuckles and belly laughs of Deep Thoughts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm melinda:

Ah, I get it. I like the bizarrity.
Avatar 8:54pm geezerette:

Well done ,man! Got MY synapses in a twist.
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

This Sun City Girls was almost universally panned every time it was released... but I really like it. I love it man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Scraps:

now this is Sun City Girls at best
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

thanks friends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Scraps:

heh!
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

glad to hear someone else agrees Scraps!

Have you heard Live Room? maybe my #1
Avatar 8:55pm geezerette:

This is like the Free Form of my childhood.
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

"one o them devil-familiars!"
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

"he made a sound that smelled so bad"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm melinda:

the sound that smelled bad, haha. I liked that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Scraps:

Flash, yep!
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

McGear = McCartney's kid brother (if you didn't know). He;s really good sometimes!
Avatar 9:12pm geezerette:

So much playful weirdness.Bo ho sweet spot was fulcrum between about '55-'6; humor/media/music/fffashion/art/...pretty much everything but horrible hippymfood.
Avatar 9:14pm geezerette:

oops...did not mean to post! Your show altered my consciousness, m-aaaaaaaa-nnn.
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@G: Hahaha, happy to intercept your secret mind-altered messages

This is the greatest song on the subject of all time
Avatar 9:24pm Flash Strap:

I MEAN DAMN

THIS IS A JAM
Avatar 9:27pm geezerette:

Rolling on floor,laughing helplessly...no,wait,that's a flash...back...
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Sis really came through I guess
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

god that was good. i got blissed
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Every time I listen to the official McCartney II, I'm so depressed this isn't actually on it. It's such a trip
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

Love McCartney II though, with or without those sweet bonus tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Scraps:

McCartney II has some of his trippiest stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Scraps:

heh!
Avatar 9:38pm Little Danny:

Wow, this McCartney!
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

agreed, much agreed
Avatar 9:39pm geezerette:

This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Scraps:

I think much Beatles fans had given up on Paul by the time of McCartney II. It really is a underrated album
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

Somewhere I have a rough draft of a show called The Stoned Genius of Paul McCartney that attempts to track all his wackiest stuff, but with the Beatle boys you always feel like a kid in shorts and somebody's already written the book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Scraps:

I have a friend who's a Rolling Stone writer who, several years ago, picked my brain for weird McCartney solo stuff. I supplied ten tracks, I think four of which came from II
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

along with Ram, it's the best MCartney I think. Then I guess McCartney I and Wings Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway. Would love to hear the opinions of others
Avatar 9:44pm geezerette:

You really should do it though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Scraps:

I really like that Ras Michael album also!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Scraps:

Band on the Run is still good, imo
Avatar 9:45pm geezerette:

It's a great idea,Evan.
Avatar 9:46pm Flash Strap:

Oh me too! one of the best Perry productions, occasionally a real rival to Heart of the Congos in my book. Which is leaving aside that Ras Michael drops classics with or without Perry in the mix. Dadawah is legend
Avatar 9:46pm just julia:

i wanna hear your wacky mccartney show, shorts and all! no surprise, just sayin. also, not related, i love "forge your own chains" so. much.
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

@G: You've convinced me to dust it off and see what can be done with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Scraps:

Dadawah is awesome
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

@Julia: you just sealed the deal!

and boy oh boy, i legitimately can't hear this song enough times
Avatar 9:48pm geezerette:

YAY!
Avatar 9:48pm Flash Strap:

tho it'd be hard to resist just playin Ram all the way through
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Doug Schulkind:

My high school sweetheart's last name was Negus. I'd be lying if I hadn't from time to time, thought about the possibility of producing my very own little son of Negus.
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

Doug! You made that joke last time I played Ras Michael! Get out of the kitchen you little scamp! you're incorrigible!
Avatar 9:50pm geezerette:

Agree,"Forge Your Own Chains"incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Dammnit! I forget what material I've used where. I basically have five comments that cycle and recycle.
Avatar 9:52pm geezerette:

haha, PERFECT sign off.
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

haha Doug you never cease to astound, in reruns or no
Avatar 9:55pm geezerette:

Thanks for all the insanity.
Avatar 9:56pm Little Danny:

That Slim Gaillard was just the greatest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I bet I also said this about a previous Explorers Room, Flash Strap: What a perfectly marvelous radio program! (Like me, Sir, you are so predictable!)
Avatar 9:57pm Little Danny:

We are laughing to keep from crying over at the Cool Blue Flame: wfmu.org... Please join in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Scraps:

Yay thank you!
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

Thanks all!

And Doug, a guillotine for any fool who describes you as predictable
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:

Good night, Jah Bless, solidarity with Venezuela, much love!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Doug Schulkind:

I KNEW you were going to say that!
