Riyaaz Qawwali interview: Sufi qawwali music and more, from the Lone Star State

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

You may know the late great Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whose ecstatic Sufi qawwali music broke through to international audiences. That success paved the way for other qawwali artists from South Asia to go global.

But now there is a top-notch qawwali ensemble right here in the US: Houston-based Riyaaz Qawwali, who are in town to play tomorrow - Sunday night April 30th at 7 - at Roulette, 509 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn as part of the weekend-long World In Trance Festival. (Niyaz, from Canada via Iran, plays the festival at Roulette tonight at 8.)

Riyaaz, with two albums out - Ishq and Kashti - has an emigre twist: While much of the material is based in Sufi mysticism, this multi-cultural group - with members from several countries - incorporate Hindu, Sikh and other themes as well. We'll learn about that and more on this week's show!

More on Omar Souleyman: Hailing from Syria, Omar Souleyman has become a worldwide sensation in modern world and electronic music circles. Souleyman, who has collaborated with Björk and Four Tet, began his career as a prolific wedding singer, releasing nearly 500 live albums before civil war broke out in his native Syria in 2011. He then moved to Turkey and in 2013 released Wenu Wenu which NPR called, “…a jam so visceral, thrilling and intense as to make the mysterious matter of earthly borders seem hardly worth the time to contemplate.” Souleyman’s new album, To Syria, With Love, is set for release June 2 via Mad Decent. The follow up to 2015’s Bahdeni Nami marks Souleyman’s third full-length studio record. More at https://www.facebook.com/Omar-Souleyman-116551741600/

Hi Rob!
  6:10pm Listener Robert:

Oh. I thought that number a few back was going to be the one that goes, "My love for you is stronger than dirt, stronger than stains, stronger than pain...."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Rob W:

Good evening everyone, thanks for listening!
Avatar 6:18pm annie:

Thanks for staying with us Liam, and thanks Drunekn Creep, and thanks very much DMcK for pointing out that reference - I will have to play the two versions back to back sometime!
Avatar 6:57pm βrian:

This playlist reads like a Dr. Bronner's soap bottle label. You could spend all night reading it ... in the bathroom.
Avatar 7:01pm βrian:

Ooh,"Tthe qawwali goes in before the name goes on."

Love it.
  7:04pm Listener Robert:

Yeah, Brian, Bronner's fights not only grease & grime, but also communism! But if you're referring to no. of linked items in the playlist frame, Mr. Weisberg's still got nothing on Mr. Shelley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Rob W:

Ah yes, good one, thanks βrian! As for my homespun playlist - I actually would like to change the template because I didn't cram in all this info when I started doing playlists online 17 or so years ago... but we're in a bit of playlist limbo right now. It doesn't really work for me to use the standard FMU playlist template and I can't create a new template right now, but hopefully within a few months...
Avatar 7:11pm βrian:

No doubt templates can be peculiar straightjackets.

Loving the music.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Bas NL:
